Chapter 2

The text arrived at 11:47 PM, exactly one year and two days after I'd sat alone in that county clerk's office.

"She had the baby yesterday. A boy. I need a few more days to handle family matters, then I'm coming for you."

My hands shook so violently I nearly dropped my phone. I read the message three times, four times, each word burning itself into my brain. A boy. Family matters. Coming for you.

I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I deep-cleaned my apartment until sunrise, scrubbing every surface until my hands were raw, as if I could erase the year of waiting along with the dust. I bought champagne—expensive, celebratory, the kind Preston and I used to share. I retrieved the marriage license documents from the bottom drawer of my desk, where I'd kept them preserved in a plastic sleeve, still crisp and official despite the months that had passed.

Three days went by. Then a week.

Preston's texts became shorter, vaguer. "Complications with family." "Mother is being difficult." "Just need a bit more time."

The champagne sat unopened in my refrigerator, condensation forming little pools around its base. The marriage license documents returned to their drawer. The framed promise on my nightstand started to feel like evidence of my own stupidity.

Two weeks after the baby's birth, I sent him a message that contained no warmth, no patience: "Meet me. Tomorrow. Or I'm coming to the Kelley estate myself."

He chose the restaurant where we'd had our first date—Marcello's, with its soft lighting and private rooms designed for intimate conversations. The irony wasn't lost on me. Our beginning and our ending, both staged in the same location.

I wore black this time. No more white dresses, no more hopeful pastels.

Preston was already there when I arrived, seated in the corner booth we'd once shared over candlelight and laughter. He looked terrible—thinner, with shadows under his eyes that makeup couldn't quite hide. His expensive suit hung slightly loose on his frame.

He stood when he saw me, reaching for my hands. I let him take them, feeling the familiar warmth of his skin, the gentle pressure of his fingers.

"Ruby." My name sounded like an apology. "I've missed you so much."

"Where's my ring, Preston?" The words came out flat, emotionless. "Where's our marriage license appointment?"

He flinched. His hands tightened on mine, and I watched his throat work as he swallowed. "There have been... complications. The family held an emergency board meeting. They're insisting that I legally marry Angelique to legitimize our son. For the succession, for the company shares, for—"

"For everything except me." I pulled my hands away. The loss of contact felt like ripping off a bandage—sharp, necessary.

"I fought them." Preston's voice cracked. "I argued for weeks. But I was outvoted. My mother controls the majority shares, and she made it clear that if I don't comply, they'll destroy not just me but your father's business. Every contract he has with Kelley Industries will be terminated. They'll blacklist him across the entire industry."

The waiter appeared with water glasses, disrupting the moment. Preston waved him away impatiently. I took a long drink, buying time, trying to process what I was hearing through the roaring in my ears.

"So you're marrying her."

"In name only." He leaned forward, desperate now. "Ruby, listen to me. The marriage will be purely legal, just paperwork. You're the one I love. You're the one I want to be with. I can buy you a house—a beautiful house wherever you want. We can still see each other, still build a life together, just... privately."

The words took a moment to fully penetrate. When they did, I felt something inside me crystallize into sharp, cutting clarity.

"Are you asking me to be your mistress?"

Preston's eyes slid away from mine. He studied the tablecloth, the water glasses, the flickering candle—anywhere but my face.

That non-answer was all the answer I needed.

I stood, my chair scraping against the floor with a harsh sound that made other diners glance over. "Don't contact me again."

"Ruby, wait—"

But I was already walking away, my heels clicking against the marble floor in a rhythm that sounded like goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

I made it to my car before the tears came. I made it home before the screaming started—raw, animal sounds that tore from my throat until my voice went hoarse. I called in sick to the research lab for three days, then four, lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, alternating between rage so intense it felt like burning alive and despair so deep I couldn't imagine ever surfacing.

On the fourth day, I dragged myself to the bathroom and caught sight of my reflection. Hollow-eyed. Pale. Unfamiliar.

And then I realized—I was late. Very late.

My hands shook as I rummaged through the cabinet under the sink, finding the box of pregnancy tests I'd bought months ago during a scare that turned out to be nothing. I took one test, then another, then a third, each time thinking the result would be different.

They all showed the same two pink lines.

I sank onto the cold bathroom tile, clutching the positive tests, feeling wave after wave of terror and hope crash over me. Six weeks. It must have happened six weeks ago, during Preston's last visit before Angelique gave birth—before everything fell apart.

A baby. Preston's baby. Our baby.

Maybe this changes everything, I thought, pressing my palm against my still-flat stomach. Maybe this is what finally forces him to choose me, to find his courage, to stand up to Victoria and the whole Kelley dynasty.

Maybe this baby is the answer I've been waiting for.
