Chapter 5

The document August slid across the table might as well have been a death sentence.

"I've already prepared the paperwork," he said, his voice carrying the smooth confidence of someone who'd never lost a case. "Full custody petition, emergency hearing request, psychological evaluation order."

I stared at the papers, my fingers trembling slightly as I touched the crisp legal letterhead. His law firm's logo gleamed in bold black ink—a predator's mark.

"You can't do this," I whispered, though I knew he could.

August leaned back in his chair, adjusting his perfect tie. "I can and I will. Unless you meet my conditions."

The conference room of his law firm felt like a courtroom already—me on trial for the crime of daring to survive his betrayal.

"Condition one," he continued, counting off on his fingers. "You publicly clear my name. Full statement to the press admitting you fabricated everything about loan sharks and abandonment."

I swallowed hard, remembering the knife pressed against my pregnant belly, the threats that still haunted my nightmares.

"Second, you sign a permanent NDA. Everything about our past, our child, our relationship—buried forever."

"And third?" My voice sounded hollow even to my own ears.

August's smile was razor-sharp. "You disappear. Completely. No interference with my wedding, my career, my life. You become a ghost, Palmer."

Winifred Cox sat beside him, her pearls catching the light as she nodded approvingly. "The judges are already briefed on your... profession, Ms. Reed. No court in this state will grant custody to an escort."

The word hung in the air between us. Escort. The identity I'd crafted to survive when August left me to die.

"Twenty-four hours," August said, standing up. "Then I file."

---

I stood in Boone's bedroom, watching his chest rise and fall with each peaceful breath. Moonlight spilled through his dinosaur curtains, casting shadows across his innocent face.

"Mommy?" he mumbled, half-asleep. "You okay?"

"I'm fine, baby." I forced a smile, stroking his soft hair. "Just checking on my favorite guy."

He wrapped his arms around my neck, his small body warm against mine. "Love you to the moon and back."

The tears came then, silent and unstoppable. I held him closer, breathing in his scent of baby shampoo and crayons, memorizing every detail.

"I love you more," I whispered against his hair.

Over his shoulder, I could see the framed photo on his nightstand—the only one I'd allowed myself to keep from our marriage. August and me, smiling on a beach in Santorini, before ambition poisoned everything.

Boone stirred against me. "Bad dream, Mommy?"

"No, sweetheart." I pulled back to look at him, wiping my tears. "Just thinking about how brave you are."

He yawned, settling back into his pillows. "Will you stay till I fall asleep?"

"Always," I promised, my heart breaking with each syllable.

---

"August." My voice cracked as I called him the next morning. "I can't... I can't fight this."

His satisfaction radiated through the phone. "I knew you'd see reason, Palmer."

"I'll do whatever you want," I continued, letting desperation seep into every word. "Just... please don't take him from me."

"Smart choice." I could hear the smile in his voice. "I'll have the NDA delivered within the hour. Once you sign, we can discuss visitation arrangements."

"Visitation?" I echoed, injecting just the right amount of confusion and despair.

"Did you think I'd let you keep primary custody?" His laugh was cruel. "Don't be naive, Palmer. You'll be lucky to see him twice a month."

I clutched the phone tighter, channeling five years of rage into a single, pitiful sob. "I understand."

---

The safe house was ready by midnight.

"Everything's secure," Clay reported, his voice low as he helped me pack Boone's favorite toys into a duffel bag. "The team is in position."

Lilith had spared no expense. The property was isolated enough to avoid detection but fortified enough to withstand a small army—electronic security, reinforced walls, multiple escape routes.

"Are you sure about this?" Clay asked, watching me zip up Boone's jacket as he slept in my arms.

"August married Kinley tomorrow," I whispered. "The moment he thinks he's won, he'll strike."

Clay nodded grimly. "The extraction team is ready."

I kissed Boone's forehead one last time before handing him to Clay. "Take care of my boy."

"We both will," he promised, his eyes reflecting the moonlight streaming through the window.

The helicopter waited on the rooftop, its blades already spinning. I watched as Clay secured Boone inside, surrounded by former special forces operators who'd sworn to protect them both.

As they lifted off into the night sky, I felt something inside me harden. August thought he'd won by threatening to take my son.

He had no idea what I was capable of when someone touched my child.

The game had changed. And this time, I held all the cards.
