Chapter 2

I found out about the app on my second morning in the clinic.

Miriam had left her tablet on the counter to charge. She didn't mean for me to see it. But I was awake at five in the morning with an IV in my arm and nothing to do except lie there and feel the hollow place where Nira used to press warm against my ribs, so I reached for it.

The app was called WolfWhisper. Anonymous posts, pack-tagged, shared across allied territories like gossip passed through a fence. I had known it existed. I had never had a reason to look.

I had a reason now.

The top post in the Silverfang feed had four hundred and twelve comments.

*Did anyone else see the Hughes girl at the Blackridge banquet? Collapsed on the floor screaming. Embarrassing doesn't cover it. She's been chasing Alpha Sanders for years and he's never once looked at her. Someone needs to tell her the bond doesn't mean he owes her anything.*

I scrolled.

*Heard she doesn't even have a real wolf anymore. Nira went dormant years ago. That's why she clings to pack admin work — it's the only thing keeping her from Omega status.*

*Staged the whole thing for attention. Classic desperate she-wolf behavior. Jackson's chosen mate handled it with so much grace.*

*The Hughes family used to mean something. Now it's just her, running errands for a man who doesn't want her.*

Three allied packs had been tagged. Moonveil. Blackridge. Ironwood. The post had been shared forty-seven times before the banquet was even over.

I set the tablet down. Flat. Careful. The way you set down something fragile when you don't trust your own hands.

Nira stirred at the bottom of me, slow and sore. She didn't howl. She just pressed her nose against the inside of my chest and breathed.

"I know," I told her.

I picked the tablet back up and started screenshotting.

Miriam came in at seven with a tray and found me sitting up in bed with my laptop open, my personal files pulled from the cloud, and three years of alliance correspondence sorted into folders on the screen.

She set the tray down without a word. Looked at the screen. Looked at me.

"How long have you been awake?"

"A while."

She pulled a chair to the bedside and sat. Not the clinical chair she used for examinations. The one she kept by the window for conversations she meant to have. That told me something.

"I filed an incident report with the Pack Council yesterday," she said. "Before you ask."

I looked up.

Her jaw was set. Miriam Cole was a small woman with gray-streaked hair and the kind of quiet that came from decades of watching people get hurt and being the only one in the room who wrote it down. She had been Silverfang's healer since before I was born. She had treated my mother once, years ago, for a training injury. She had treated me more times than either of us had ever counted.

"The toxicology came back this morning," she said. She slid a folder across the blanket. "Wolfsbane. Concentrated. The dose in that goblet was not an accident and it was not a prank. At your body weight, with your wolf's current sensitivity —" She stopped. Pressed her lips together. "You should not have survived it, Olivia."

I opened the folder.

Timestamped intake records. Blood panel. Toxicology report with the concentration circled in red ink — Miriam's handwriting, precise and furious. A formal written assessment of wolf damage, three pages, clinical language that somehow still managed to read like an indictment. At the bottom, her signature and the Pack Council submission stamp.

"I documented everything," she said. "Every treatment. Every reading. The charcoal patch, the IV composition, the wolf-damage assessment. It is all in the Council record now." She paused. "I also documented what I observed through the partition. Jackson Sanders and Josie Jensen in the hallway. The time. What was said within my hearing."

I stared at the submission stamp for a moment.

"Thank you, Miriam."

"Don't thank me." Her voice was flat. "Use it."

I closed the folder and set it on top of my laptop. Then I picked up my phone and called my attorney.

His name was Conrad Park. He had handled Hughes family legal matters for eleven years, which meant he had handled them for me for eleven years, because I was the one who called him. He answered on the second ring.

"Olivia." A pause. "I heard what happened at the banquet."

"Then you're ahead of me," I said. "Pull up the WolfWhisper posts tagged to Silverfang, Moonveil, Blackridge, and Ironwood. Screenshot everything before it gets deleted. I'll send you Miriam Cole's clinical file in the next hour — toxicology, wolf-damage assessment, her Pack Council incident report. I need formal grievances filed against Josie Jensen for defamation, fabrication of mind-link evidence, and inter-pack treaty violations. I want cease-and-desist orders served to every account that shared the original post."

A longer pause.

"That's three allied packs."

"I know."

"Jackson is going to —"

"I know what Jackson is going to do," I said. "File the grievances, Conrad."

He filed them by noon.

I spent the rest of the day going through my records.

Fifteen years of them. Alliance negotiation transcripts. Financial ledgers. Warrior training logs. Every treaty clause I had drafted, every phone call I had taken on Silverfang's behalf, every decision I had made and documented because guilt had taught me to leave a paper trail for everything, as if someday I might need to prove I had been useful enough to justify the space I took up.

I had not known, when I started keeping those records at eighteen, that I was building a legal case. I had thought I was building an apology.

Nira watched me work. She was still sore, still moving carefully inside me like a wolf favoring a bruised leg. But her eyes were open. Clear.

"This is everything," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"He won't see it coming."

I thought about Josie's post. Four hundred and twelve comments. Three allied packs. The word *desperate* used eleven times in the thread, like someone had handed out a script.

"She didn't either," I said.

I kept working.

Outside the clinic window, the Silverfang pack house sat quiet in the afternoon light. Somewhere in there, Jackson was going about his day. Eating lunch. Laughing at something Derek said. Wearing a fresh shirt.

The cease-and-desist orders would land before dinner.

I turned back to my screen and kept building.
