Chapter 2

I didn't sleep that night. I didn't cry either.

I sat with my back against the headboard and my notebook open on my knees, and I wrote. Not feelings. Not grief. A list. Practical, numbered, specific. The kind of list a Luna makes when she has been running a pack house for three years and knows exactly where every resource lives.

By the time the sky outside my window went gray, I had four pages.

The next morning I did not go to the kitchen.

This sounds small. It wasn't. For three years, I had been in that kitchen by six. Damian's stomach was a problem that required management — low acid, no spice, nothing fried, nothing that would sit wrong. I had learned his body's rhythms the way a healer learns a patient's chart. I knew which mornings his ulcer was quiet and which ones it wasn't, and I cooked accordingly, without being asked, without being thanked.

That morning I made myself tea and sat at the small table in my room and drank it while it was still hot.

Hazel was quiet inside me. Not the wounded quiet of the night before. Something steadier. She pressed against my ribs once, like a hand on a shoulder, and then she settled.

I heard someone clatter around in the kitchen downstairs. Then silence. Then the clatter again.

I finished my tea.

On the second day, I stopped laying out his clothes.

On the third day, I severed the mind-link.

That one took a moment. The link had been open for three years — a low, constant hum at the back of my skull, the way a refrigerator hums, something you stop noticing until it's gone. I closed it the way you close a window. Firmly. Without drama. The silence on the other side was immediate and absolute.

I stood in the middle of my room and breathed it in.

Hazel made a sound that wasn't quite a growl and wasn't quite a sigh.

Good, she said.

The pack house felt different by day three. Not chaotic — the senior staff were competent, they could manage — but off. The small frictions that I had been smoothing for years started showing. A warrior's meal came out wrong. A schedule conflict wasn't caught. Someone addressed me in the hallway as Luna and I looked through them and kept walking, and the confusion on their face followed me down the corridor.

I did not attend the morning pack run.

I went to the garden instead and sat in the cold and pressed my palm flat against my stomach and thought about the heartbeat the healer had described. Healthy. Six weeks.

I was still sitting there when Gregory found me.

---

He came around the garden path with his hands in his coat pockets, unhurried, the way he always moved when he wanted to appear reasonable. My stepfather. Beta Gregory Morris. The man who had handed me to this pack like a spare part and called it an honor.

"Brooke." He sat down on the bench across from me without being invited. "We need to talk."

I looked at him. I didn't say anything.

He took that as permission. He always did.

"What happened at dinner was unfortunate," he said. "But the situation is what it is. Diana is back. The alliance has a path forward now, a real one, and what we need from you —" he paused, the way he always paused before the part he wanted to sound like wisdom — "is to make this easy. Leave quietly. The pup complicates things. You understand that."

I kept my hands still in my lap.

"Give the child to the pack. Let Diana and Damian build what they're meant to build. You'll be provided for. A house somewhere, a stipend. You're young. You'll find —"

"How much?"

He stopped. "What?"

"How much is the stipend."

He named a number. It was insulting. He said it with the confidence of a man who had never once considered that I might have done the math myself.

I looked at him for a long moment. The garden was cold. A bird moved in the hedge behind him. I thought about six weeks. I thought about four pages of notes. I thought about the way Hazel had gone quiet last night, not in defeat but in the particular stillness of a wolf deciding.

"I served as Luna of this pack for three years," I said. "I managed the pack house, the healer's rotation, the alliance correspondence, the harvest ceremonies, and your Alpha's stomach condition. I am legally entitled to a settlement from shared pack assets upon dissolution of the mate bond. The standard rate for a serving Luna of three years is five million dollars."

Gregory's expression didn't change. But something behind his eyes did.

"I've written it up," I said. "I'll be delivering it to Caleb this morning."

"Brooke." His voice dropped into that register — the one that wasn't quite Alpha tone but was designed to feel like it. The one he had been using on me since I was seventeen. "You're not thinking clearly. You're upset, and that's understandable, but —"

"I'm thinking very clearly." I stood up. "Clearer than I have in three years, actually."

I left him on the bench.

---

Caleb processed the paperwork without a word.

He read it twice, carefully, and I watched his jaw tighten once on the second pass. He was a fair man, Caleb. He had given me that small nod for three years, the one that said you are seen. I think he had known, somewhere, that this day was coming. He just hadn't known it would look like this.

"I'll need Alpha's signature," he said.

"I know."

Damian signed by afternoon. Caleb brought me the confirmation without meeting my eyes. Gregory stood in the doorway of the office and said nothing. His face had gone the color of old ash.

The witnesses were assembled in the front room an hour later. Gregory. Caleb. Two senior pack members whose names I had known for three years, whose children I had helped heal, whose schedules I had managed without complaint.

I stood in the center of the room with the rejection acceptance form in my hand.

My handwriting was even. My hands were steady. I had practiced the words in my head the way I used to practice healing remedies, and they came out clean.

"I, Brooke Torres, accept the rejection of Alpha Damian Cunningham of the Shadowcrest Pack." I paused. One breath. "And I formally renounce my bond with the Shadowcrest Pack. I release my membership, my rank, and my obligations. I leave of my own will, as a free wolf."

The silence in the room was a living thing.

I heard Gregory make a sound — not words, just a sound, the kind a man makes when something he built for years cracks at the foundation. Caleb stood very still. One of the senior pack members looked at my stomach and then quickly away.

I picked up my bag from the chair where I had set it that morning.

I did not look at Gregory.

I did not look at the hallway where I had walked for three years carrying trays and silence and a love that had never once been asked for.

I walked out the front door of Shadowcrest pack house into the cold morning air, and I kept walking, and I did not look back.

Hazel ran beside me in my chest, quiet and steady and finally, finally free.
