After My Groom Betrayed Me With My Stepsister Chapter 1

The bathroom mirror at the Plaza reflected a woman I barely recognized. I'd spent two hours on my hair alone, twisting it into an elegant updo that exposed the curve of my neck. The dress—navy blue, modest, purchased with money I'd saved from grocery budgets—fit perfectly. I'd imagined Cole's face when he saw me tonight. Imagined him finally looking at me the way he used to, back when we were just two people in love, before DeepSpace Tech consumed everything.

Three years. Three years of living in the margins of his success.

The ballroom of the Manhattan Grand buzzed with the kind of energy that only comes from old money meeting new ambition. Crystal chandeliers cast fractured light across faces I'd seen in Forbes and Bloomberg. I smoothed my dress and made my way through the crowd, searching for Cole among the tailored suits and designer gowns that cost more than our monthly rent.

I found him backstage, adjusting his tie in front of a full-length mirror. The bespoke suit—Brioni, probably fifteen thousand dollars—fit him like a second skin. His phone was pressed to his ear, that practiced laugh he used for investors rolling off his tongue.

"Cole," I said softly, not wanting to interrupt.

He glanced at me, his eyes sliding over my dress with the kind of assessment you'd give a piece of furniture. No warmth. No recognition of the effort. He ended his call with a quick promise to "circle back" and pocketed his phone.

"You're here." Not a question. Not quite an acknowledgment either.

"Of course I'm here. It's our anniversary. The company's anniversary." I reached for his hand, but he was already moving, checking his cufflinks in the mirror.

"Right. Listen, the seating chart has you near the buffet. Stay there, okay? I've got investors from Singapore in the front row, and—" He paused, running his hand through his hair. That tell. He was nervous about something. "Just don't embarrass me tonight. No stories about the early days or how we started in that studio apartment. These people don't care about that stuff."

The words landed like a slap. "I helped build this company, Cole."

"You helped." He said it like I'd suggested I'd invented electricity. "Naomi, tonight is important. I need you to just... blend in. Can you do that for me?"

Blend in. Disappear. Be invisible.

I'd been doing it for three years.

"Of course," I heard myself say, my voice small and apologetic. Always apologizing. "I'll stay out of the way."

He kissed my forehead—a dismissal disguised as affection—and strode toward the stage entrance, already scrolling through his phone.

I found my seat near the back, partially obscured by a decorative column. The buffet table stretched beside me, laden with canapés I had no appetite for. Around me, conversations swirled about market disruptions and venture capital, a language I understood better than anyone knew. I'd written half the pitch deck that secured their Series B funding. I'd been the one to suggest the pivot that saved them during the supply chain crisis.

But tonight, I was just Cole Hayes's wife. The one by the buffet.

The lights dimmed. Cole took the stage to thunderous applause, his smile bright and confident under the spotlights. He launched into his keynote with the charisma that had first drawn me to him, back when that charm felt genuine instead of calculated.

"Three years ago, DeepSpace Tech was just a dream," he said, his voice carrying across the ballroom. "But dreams don't become reality without the right partner."

My chest tightened. Maybe he would acknowledge me after all. Maybe—

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce someone very special. My muse. My partner. The woman who inspires everything I do."

The spotlight swung to the side of the stage.

Haley Ray stepped into the light.

My stepsister moved with practiced grace, her red dress clinging to curves she'd spent thousands maintaining. Her smile was radiant, perfect, as she glided toward Cole like she belonged there. Like she'd earned it.

The room erupted in applause.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. My fingers gripped the edge of the table as Cole reached into his jacket pocket and withdrew a velvet box.

No. Not that box.

"The Heart of Eternity," Cole announced, opening it to reveal the necklace. My mother's necklace. The sapphire caught the light, throwing blue fire across Haley's throat as Cole fastened the clasp. "For the woman who makes everything possible."

The crowd cheered. Cameras flashed. Haley pressed herself against Cole's side, her hand possessive on his chest.

I watched my husband kiss my stepsister's temple. Watched him present her with the only piece of my mother I had left. Watched three years of my life, my work, my sacrifice, get erased in a single moment.

The bathroom was empty when I stumbled into it. I braced myself against the sink, my reflection swimming through tears I refused to let fall. Not here. Not for him.

My phone vibrated. An unknown number.

"Miss Myers." The voice was formal, familiar. Alfredo. I hadn't heard that name—my real name—in three years. "Your grandfather has suffered a severe heart episode. He's asking for you. I've sent a car to the service entrance."

The words cut through the fog. Grandpa. The man I'd abandoned when I chose Cole. The legacy I'd walked away from for love.

I looked at my reflection one last time. At the woman who'd made herself small. Who'd given everything and received nothing.

My wedding ring slipped off easily. I left it on the marble counter, a small circle of gold that had never meant what I'd needed it to mean.

The service elevator was empty. The black car was waiting.

I didn't look back.
