Chapter 3

The morning after my discovery in Christopher's study, I couldn't shake the terrible suspicion growing inside me. My husband wasn't dead—he was sitting across from me at breakfast, wearing his brother's name like a stolen suit, thinking me too grief-stricken and naive to notice.

I needed proof beyond handwriting and a familiar scar. I needed something irrefutable.

"I'm going out for some air," I announced, one hand protectively cradling my belly as I rose from the table.

Eleanor looked up sharply. "In your condition? Wouldn't you rather rest, dear?"

"The doctor said gentle walking is good for the baby," I replied, my voice steady despite my racing heart. "I won't be long."

As soon as I was safely away from the Blake estate, I pulled out my phone and dialed the number I'd found in Christopher's contact list labeled simply "MB Office."

"Westbrook Financial, how may I direct your call?" a cheerful receptionist answered.

I swallowed hard. "I'm calling about Michael Blake. I need to verify some information for his ID badge."

"Oh," her voice softened. "We were all so sorry to hear about Michael. Such a tragedy."

My blood froze. "Yes, it was. I'm just helping the family sort through some paperwork. Could you confirm his employee number for me?"

"Let me transfer you to HR. One moment."

A few minutes later, I was speaking with Sarah Jenkins, who identified herself as Michael's former colleague.

"I'm sorry," she said, confusion evident in her voice. "There must be some mistake. It was Christopher Blake who passed away in the boating accident. Michael's been back in the office this week."

My legs nearly gave out beneath me. I leaned against a nearby tree for support.

"Of course," I managed. "I misspoke. Thank you for your help."

I ended the call, my hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped the phone. They had switched identities. The man I buried wasn't Christopher—it was Michael. And my husband was now living as his brother, married to Victoria, while expecting me to accept their twisted arrangement.

---

That afternoon, I made another call from the privacy of a coffee shop twenty minutes from the Blake estate.

"Marcus Thorne Investigations," a deep voice answered.

"Mr. Thorne," I said quietly, "I need your help with a delicate matter."

"I specialize in delicate matters, Mrs...?"

"Blake. Isabella Blake." The name felt like ashes in my mouth. "I need information about my husband and his... activities before his supposed death."

Marcus Thorne agreed to meet me the following day. I paid his retainer in cash, using money I'd withdrawn from my personal account—an account Christopher had never known about, a small rebellion against his insistence that we pool all our resources.

"I need photographs, hotel records, anything that can prove my husband was having an affair with his sister-in-law," I explained when we met in a quiet corner of the public library. "And I need it quickly."

Marcus nodded, his expression professional but compassionate. "I understand, Mrs. Blake. I'll be discreet."

Three days later, Marcus delivered. Photos of Victoria entering luxury hotels in the city, followed shortly by Christopher—not Michael, but unmistakably my husband—over dates spanning our entire marriage. Credit card receipts for jewelry I'd never received. Restaurant bills for meals I'd never eaten.

"There's more," Marcus said gently. "Your husband appears to have been planning this identity switch for some time. There are records of consultations with a plastic surgeon specializing in minor facial adjustments—nothing dramatic, just enough to accentuate the differences between twins."

I stared at the evidence, nausea rising in my throat. Eight years of marriage. Eight years of lies.

---

That night, while everyone slept, I slipped into Christopher's study with the spare key I'd secretly kept. I knew there had to be more—something concrete that would reveal the full extent of his betrayal.

Behind the painting of his grandfather, I found it: a wall safe I'd never known existed. The combination eluded me until I tried our wedding date—a cruel irony that made me want to scream.

Inside lay the final pieces of the puzzle: dual passports for both Christopher and Michael. A detailed blueprint for the identity switch. Financial records showing how my family's money had been systematically funneled to accounts in Victoria's name.

And letters. Dozens of love letters from "Christopher" to Victoria, dating back to before our wedding.

"My dearest V," one read, "Soon we'll have everything we've dreamed of. Isabella suspects nothing. Her parents' money continues to flow, and she believes every word of my devotion. The poor, naive girl. How fortunate that her love blinds her to the truth."

I clutched the letter, my vision blurring with tears of rage rather than sorrow. In that moment, something inside me hardened. The grieving widow was gone.

In her place stood a woman with nothing left to lose—except her child and her dignity. And I would fight with everything I had to reclaim both.
