Chapter 3

The doorbell rang just after ten the next morning. I hadn't slept, hadn't changed my clothes. The coffee mug in my hand had gone cold hours ago, but I couldn't seem to let it go. My fingers had memorized its curve, found comfort in its solid presence when everything else felt like quicksand.

I knew who it would be before I opened the door. Jason stood on the porch, his expression carefully arranged into what he probably thought was sympathy. Behind him, Michael's Tesla gleamed in the driveway.

"Mom," he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. His eyes darted around the foyer, looking everywhere but at me. "Dad called. He's worried about you."

"Is he?" My voice sounded strange to my own ears, hollow and distant. "How thoughtful of him to send you to check on me."

Jason ran a hand through his hair—Michael's gesture, Michael's dark waves. "Can we sit down? Talk about this like adults?"

Like adults. As if I were the child having a tantrum.

We moved to the living room, that showcase of our perfect family life. Every piece of furniture had a story—the antique coffee table we'd found in Provence, the armchair where I'd nursed Jason through countless fevers, the bookshelf Michael had built in our first apartment. Now it all looked like a movie set, props arranged to tell a lie.

"Dad told me everything," Jason said, perching on the edge of the sofa. Still not meeting my eyes. "About Victoria. About their daughter."

"And the baby," I added quietly. "Don't forget the new baby."

He nodded, fingers tapping against his knee. "Look, Mom, I know this is hard. But you need to be more understanding. These things... they happen in marriages."

"These things." I set down my cold coffee. "You mean your father having another family for eighteen years? That happens?"

"Victoria is actually quite nice," he continued as if I hadn't spoken. "She's more modern, you know? Fun. And she's been really supportive of my startup—she connected me with three investors last year."

The room tilted slightly. "Last year?"

Jason's cheeks flushed, but his voice remained steady. "I've known for a while. About four years, I guess."

Four years. My son had known for four years that his father was living a double life.

"Christmas," I said suddenly, remembering. "Last Christmas, when you couldn't make it home because of that emergency meeting in San Francisco."

He looked away, confirmation enough.

"You were with them." The words tasted bitter. "Your father's other family."

"It's not like that, Mom." Now he sounded irritated, impatient with my inability to understand. "We're all family. Victoria's daughter is my half-sister. And she's great, really smart. You'd like her if you gave her a chance."

I stared at my son—this stranger wearing Jason's face. "Get out."

"Mom—"

"Get out of my house." The same words I'd said to Michael, but this time my voice shook with rage. "Now."

He stood, sighing like I was being unreasonable. "You'll feel differently once you've had time to think. Dad says you always come around."

The door had barely closed behind him when it opened again. Brenda Harrison swept in, her Hermès scarf fluttering dramatically, a Tupperware container in her manicured hands.

"Oh, Eleanor," she cooed, air-kissing both my cheeks. "I came as soon as I heard. These men and their midlife crises, honestly."

I stood frozen in my foyer, wondering if I'd entered some bizarre parallel universe where my husband's eighteen-year affair was equivalent to buying a sports car.

"I brought snickerdoodles," Brenda continued, pushing past me into the kitchen. "Your favorite. And look—" She pulled glossy magazines from her designer bag, spreading them across my counter. "I thought these might help."

I glanced down. The cover of Town & Country featured the smiling wife of a prominent politician who'd fathered three children with his secretary. "How Jackie Kennedy Survived Scandal With Grace," announced another headline.

"The thing is, Eleanor," Brenda said, patting my hand, "strong women preserve their marriages. They think of the family name, the legacy. Michael made a mistake—"

"A mistake," I echoed. "For eighteen years."

"—but he still needs you. The business needs you. What would people say if you left now? After thirty years?" She pushed a cookie toward me. "Just think about it. Sleep on it. The Harrison name means something in this town."

I looked at the magazines, at the smiling women who'd swallowed their pride and stayed. At Brenda's perfectly composed face, her wedding ring gleaming on her finger.

"The Harrison name," I repeated slowly. "But I was born a Bennett."

Something inside me—something that had been bending for thirty years—finally broke free.
