Chapter 2

The town car dropped me at the Midtown entrance at eight sharp.

I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, looking up at the building. Forty-two floors of glass and steel. Our name on the lobby directory. I had walked through these doors a thousand times as Sloan Daniels, co-founder, and never once thought to question what was underneath.

Now I was walking in as someone else.

The lobby security guard nodded. 'Morning, Mr. Reyes.'

'Morning,' I said, keeping my voice low and even. Emilio's voice. I was getting better at it.

The private elevator required a keycard and a six-digit code. I had watched Emilio enter it so many times over the years that my fingers found the sequence without thinking. The doors slid open. I stepped inside.

His office was on the thirty-eighth floor. Corner suite, floor-to-ceiling windows, a view of Midtown that he had described to investors as 'the only backdrop worth having.' I had helped him choose the furniture. The desk, the shelving, the particular shade of charcoal on the accent wall. I had thought we were building something together.

I sat down in his chair.

It fit differently than I expected. Heavier. Like the whole room was designed to make the person sitting here feel like they owned the world.

Maybe that was the point.

I woke his terminal with a touch and entered his password — the one I had watched him type so many times he had stopped bothering to shield the screen. The desktop opened. I went straight to the financial directory.

The files were organized with the same meticulous precision Emilio applied to everything visible in his life. But I knew how to read between the lines. I had built the accounting architecture for this company in its first two years. I knew where the bodies were buried because I had helped pour the foundation.

I started pulling records. Asset accounts. Transfer histories. Shell entities I had never seen before. There was a holding company registered in Delaware — Crestline Partners LLC — that had been receiving quarterly transfers for three years. The amounts were not enormous individually. Together they added up to just over two million dollars.

I photographed every screen.

I was halfway through the investment portfolio when the door opened.

Khloe Matthews moved the way she always did — efficient, composed, a tablet in one hand and a coffee in the other. She set the coffee on the desk without being asked, the way someone does when they have done it so many times it has become muscle memory.

'Good morning,' she said. 'You have the Hargrove call at nine-thirty, the board pre-read is due by noon, and your lunch with Marcus Hale has been moved to one o'clock at his request.'

She was good. Professional. Perfectly neutral.

But she held the tablet two seconds longer than necessary before setting it down. And when she turned to go, there was a tightness across her shoulders that had nothing to do with the morning schedule.

I had seen that look before. Not on Khloe. On myself. Years ago, standing in doorways, waiting for Emilio to look up from his phone and actually see me.

'Close the door, Khloe.'

She stopped.

'I need to talk to you about something I should have said a long time ago.'

She turned slowly. Her expression was careful — the face of someone who has trained herself not to want things too visibly. But her eyes gave her away. They always do.

She closed the door.

I leaned back in his chair and let the silence sit for a moment. I had learned, watching Emilio in boardrooms, that silence was a tool. Most people rushed to fill it. Khloe was no exception.

'Is everything okay?' she asked.

'No,' I said. 'It hasn't been for a while.'

I watched her process that. The careful neutrality flickered.

'I've been doing a lot of thinking,' I continued. 'About what's real. About who actually knows me.' I paused. 'You know me, Khloe. Better than anyone in this building. Better than Sloan does.'

Something moved across her face. She tried to suppress it and couldn't quite manage.

'After the gala,' I said, 'things are going to change. I'm done pretending.'

The tablet in her hands shifted. A small adjustment, but I caught it.

'What are you saying?' Her voice was very quiet.

'I'm saying I'm going to leave her. After the gala. I need everything clean before then.' I held her gaze. 'I need to know that you're with me.'

Two years. She had spent two years telling herself a story about what she was to him. I could see the whole architecture of that story in the way she looked at me right now — the hope she had been managing and rationing and refusing to fully believe in, suddenly given permission to exist.

It was almost painful to watch.

Almost.

'What do you need?' she asked.

'The cloud backups,' I said. 'The archive. I need to know it's all secure before things get complicated.'

She didn't hesitate. She pulled out her personal phone — the one she kept separate from her work device, the one I had not known existed until this moment — and opened a notes app. She read me the passwords. The backup access codes. The archive login.

Then she reached into her bag and took out a folded piece of paper.

'I kept a list,' she said. 'In case you ever needed it. In case things ever got—' She stopped. 'I kept it.'

I took the paper and unfolded it.

Names. Dates. Addresses. Khloe's handwriting, small and precise. Amyra Wells. A SoHo address. A note beside it: *current, as of last month.*

Below that, two other names I didn't recognize. Women I had never heard of. Women Emilio had apparently decided were worth keeping track of, and Khloe had decided were worth documenting.

I folded the paper and set it on the desk.

'Thank you,' I said. 'This is exactly what I needed.'

She smiled. It was a small, careful smile — the smile of someone who has been waiting a long time to be chosen and is still not quite sure they believe it.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my ring finger, beneath the desk where she couldn't see.

'I'll let you get back to the schedule,' I said. 'Hold my calls until nine-fifteen.'

She nodded and left.

The door clicked shut.

I sat with the list in front of me and the archive codes on the screen and the financial records still open in another window, and I thought about Khloe Matthews, who had spent two years managing the logistics of her own humiliation and called it love.

I thought about all the women in this building, in this city, in this life Emilio had constructed — each of us believing we had some particular significance to him. Each of us wrong.

I picked up the list and photographed it.

Then I got back to work.
