Chapter 3

The server room hummed like a sleeping animal.

It was Sunday. Three p.m. The forty-seventh floor was empty except for me and Yasmin Park, our head of IT. She was the one I had hired three years ago out of a half-dead startup, the one whose mother's surgery I had quietly covered when her insurance refused. She had not forgotten.

Neither had I.

She sat at the master console. Her hair was pulled back. She did not look at me when I pulled the second chair beside her.

"How long is the compilation?" I asked.

"Six minutes, twenty-two seconds."

"That's enough."

She nodded. Her fingers moved across the keys. Cold blue light washed her face.

"Timestamps?"

"Burned in. Bottom right. Authenticated against the building log."

"Routing?"

"Third-party server in Reykjavik. Scheduled release at nine forty-five Eastern, the morning of the board meeting. The file goes to every director's inbox and a copy to the press list at the same second. It cannot be pulled back once the trigger fires."

I watched the progress bar inch across the screen. My pulse was even. The hum of the servers felt almost kind.

"Yasmin."

She stopped typing.

"You can still walk out of this room."

She turned to look at me for the first time. Her eyes were dry and very steady.

"Mrs. Spencer," she said, "I knew what was on that footage two minutes after the alert hit your phone. I've known where the trigger should go for nine days."

She pressed enter.

A small green checkmark appeared in the corner of the screen.

"Done," she said.

I exhaled, just once. "Thank you."

"Don't." She closed the laptop. "Just send me the offer letter when you land."

I smiled. It almost reached somewhere real.

The night before our anniversary, Corey came home early.

I was at the kitchen island in jeans, a glass of water beside me, reading nothing on my phone. He kissed my forehead and held up two black cards.

"Reservation," he said. "Eight o'clock. Daniel."

My stomach dropped two floors before I caught it.

Daniel. The corner table by the window. The night he had gone down on one knee with a ring he could not afford and a speech he had practiced in our shower. Twelve years ago. The same city. The same chairs.

I looked at his face. He was proud of himself.

He did not know.

"That's lovely," I said.

My voice was even. I felt something hot crack behind my eyes and I pressed it down with the heel of my hand the way you press a wound.

"Wear the green dress," he said. "The one I like."

"All right."

I wore the green dress.

The maître d' remembered us. He led us past the bar and to the same table by the window. The candle was the same height. The linen was the same weight. Corey ordered the wine he had ordered then, and he did not notice that my hands stayed in my lap for the first ten minutes because if I had picked up the glass it would have rattled against my teeth.

He talked about Q4 projections.

For two hours.

The duck arrived. The wine was poured. He talked about the new data center in Phoenix. He talked about the analyst call. He talked about a man named Brent who had said something stupid in a meeting on Friday.

I ate my meal. I cut each piece of meat into a square. I chewed twelve times. My mother had taught me that, a long time ago, in a kitchen with a window over the sink.

Near the end, Corey reached across the table and took my hand.

His palm was warm. His thumb moved over my knuckles the way it had in this exact chair, twelve years ago, when he had asked me to spend my life with him.

I let him hold it.

I looked at the candle between us. I looked at the man across the linen. I tried, once, the way a person tries a door they already know is locked, to feel something.

Nothing.

Not rage. Not grief. Not the smallest tug of the girl who had said yes in this room.

Just the clean, quiet space inside me where he used to live.

"You're quiet tonight," he said.

"I'm tired."

He lifted my hand and pressed his lips to my knuckles. "Twelve years tomorrow," he said. "Can you believe it?"

"No," I said. "I can't."

He smiled. He did not hear it.

***

The alarm went off at three fifty-eight a.m.

I did not need it. I had been awake since two, lying very still on my side of the bed, listening to Corey breathe.

I got up. I did not look back at the shape of him under the duvet.

The bathroom light was the only one I turned on. I washed my face. I brushed my teeth. I twisted my hair into the low knot I had worn the day I signed our marriage license. I put on the gray suit I had bought for Oslo, and the flat shoes, and my grandmother's gold band on my right hand.

My bags were not in the closet. They had been at the private car service on East Sixty-Fourth for a week. Three suitcases. One carry-on. The fireproof box from the bank, retrieved on Friday and wrapped in a hotel laundry bag.

I walked down the hall to the home office.

The envelope was already in the top drawer where I had left it last night. Cream paper. His name in my handwriting. Inside, a single page. The signed petition for divorce. The flash drive. The address of the lawyer who would receive his response.

I placed it in the center of his desk. I lined it up with the edge of his blotter. I touched it once with two fingers.

Then I walked to the living room.

The sky over Manhattan was beginning to bruise. Not yet light. Not yet anything. The river was a dark seam to the east.

The photograph was on the wall above the console table. Four a.m. The night of the IPO. He had been crying when I took it. So had I.

I did not take it off the wall.

I wanted him to walk into this room in eight hours and see it. I wanted him to stand in front of it and understand that the woman who had taken that picture had also taken this one, this empty apartment, this whole quiet morning, and carried it out the door behind her.

I looked at the skyline through the window for a long minute.

Goodbye, I thought. Not to him.

To the girl on the fire escape.

The elevator was waiting. My phone in my coat pocket. My passport in the inside flap, in the name on the ticket, the one Corey had never heard.

The doors closed.

Forty-seven floors down, the lobby was empty. The doorman lifted his cap. The car was at the curb, engine running, exhaust white in the cold.

I got in.

"JFK," I said. "Terminal One."

The driver pulled away. The building shrank in the side mirror.

I did not turn around.
