Chapter 2

Jordan kissed my forehead at seven in the morning, his lips warm and unhurried, like a man with nothing to hide.

"I'm proud of you," he said against my hair. "Last night — your wolf, Madeline. She's incredible."

I tilted my face up and smiled at him. The smile came easily. That was the thing about five years of practice — the muscle memory was already there. I didn't have to build it from scratch. I just had to use it.

"Thank you," I said. "It felt right. Like she'd been waiting."

He pulled back and looked at me with those warm dark eyes, and I looked back, and neither of us was seeing the other clearly. He was seeing the future Luna he needed. I was seeing the man I had confirmed, twelve hours ago, was sleeping with someone else.

We were both performing. The difference was that only one of us knew it.

He left for what he called a training run at nine. I stood at the kitchen window and watched his car pull out of the driveway. Then I went to the desk in the corner of the bedroom, opened the bottom drawer, and took out the journal.

It was small and plain — dark green cover, no label. I had kept it for two years, originally just as a habit, a way of organizing my thoughts when pack politics got complicated. The shorthand I used was something I had developed myself over time, a mix of abbreviations and symbols that looked like nothing to anyone else. Nora had picked it up once and handed it back immediately, laughing. "It looks like you invented your own language."

"I did," I had told her, and she had thought I was joking.

I sat down, uncapped the pen, and wrote the date at the top of a fresh page.

Then I wrote everything. The ceremony. The scent confirmation. The exact moment my wolf followed Jordan's cedar-and-rain thread and found Adrianna's perfume woven through it. I wrote Damon's name, and the proposition, and the agreement. I wrote what I had observed and what I had inferred and what I still needed to verify. I wrote the timeline as I currently understood it — rough, full of gaps, but the shape of it was already there.

I wrote it all in the shorthand, small and precise, and when I was done I read it back once to check for errors. Then I closed the journal, put it back in the drawer, and went to make breakfast.

The grief was there. I wasn't pretending it wasn't. It sat in my chest like something heavy and cold, and every so often it shifted and I felt the full weight of it — five years, a future, a bond I had believed in completely. That was real. I wasn't going to insult myself by pretending it wasn't.

But grief and planning were not mutually exclusive. I had learned that last night, standing in the dark woods with black-pine-and-smoke filling my lungs and a cold, clear part of my mind already building the architecture of what came next. I could carry both. I was good at carrying things.

I made eggs. I ate them at the kitchen table. I checked my phone.

I was going to be fine.

---

Three days later, I was driving back from the eastern edge of pack territory — I had gone to check on a pack member who had been ill, one of the small, unglamorous duties that Lillian had assigned me as part of my Luna preparation — when I saw Jordan's car.

It was parked outside the Ridgeline Motel, a low, unremarkable building on the border road that most pack members had no reason to visit. I knew it by sight. Everyone did. It was the kind of place that existed specifically for things people didn't want witnessed.

I pulled over slowly, about a hundred meters back, behind a stand of trees that gave me a clear sightline without putting me in view. My wolf went very still.

They came out of room seven.

Jordan first, his jacket half-zipped, running a hand through his hair in that particular way he had when he was trying to look casual. Then Adrianna, her dark hair loose, her hand brushing his arm once before she let it drop. They didn't look around. Why would they? They had no reason to think anyone was watching.

I took out my phone.

I photographed the motel sign. I photographed their retreating figures — Jordan's broad shoulders, Adrianna's red coat, the specific angle of the morning light that made the timestamp on the image unambiguous. I noted the room number. I noted the time.

Then I put my phone in my bag, pulled back onto the road, and drove home.

My wolf was quiet the whole way. Not the quiet of shock — she had already known, had confirmed it the night of the ceremony. This was a different kind of quiet. Focused. The quiet of something that has identified its target and is conserving energy.

Good girl, I thought at her.

She didn't respond, but I felt her settle.

Jordan arrived home fifty-three minutes later. I heard his key in the lock and was already in the kitchen, filling a glass from the filtered pitcher in the refrigerator. I turned when he came in, and his cheeks were faintly flushed — from the cold, he would say, or from the run — and his scent was layered with fresh air that smelled slightly too deliberate, like a man who had driven with the windows down.

I held out the glass.

"How was the run?" I asked.

He took the water and drank half of it. "Good," he said. "Cleared my head."

"You were out longer than usual."

"Went further than I planned." He set the glass down and smiled at me, easy and warm. "You know how it is when you get into a rhythm."

"I do," I said.

I smiled back at him, and he kissed my cheek, and he went to shower, and I stood in the kitchen and listened to the water run.

I pressed my thumbnail into the inside of my wrist. Once. Lightly.

Then I went back to the desk, opened the journal, and added the motel to the file.

My Alpha Replaced Me For Her Novel Cover

My mate, the Alpha, was planning to replace me. He was terrified of the family curse that took his mother in childbirth, and he decided his human lover, Lila, was a safer bet to carry his heir. The plan was as cruel as it was calculated. He was throwing me a lavish birthday party, not to celebrate me, but to create a public stage for my rejection. He told his most trusted men he would break our sacred bond and install Lila as his new mate right after. The humiliation was a constant, public execution. He flaunted Lila at every turn, and for a tiny scrape on her hand, he performed a sacred life-force ritual meant only for a dying mate, a blasphemy that horrified our pack. At a formal dinner, Lila announced she was pregnant, and he fled with her when I demanded the rejection he had planned all along. Later that night, through the agony of our bond, I felt him kiss her. It was a passionate, claiming kiss that finally shattered my heart. He thought I was too gentle to fight back, a willing sacrifice for the good of the pack. He was wrong. Using his own rage against him, I twisted the rite and severed our bond myself. The next morning, I signed his papers, took none of his blood money, and walked out of his life forever, leaving him to the future he'd built on a bed of lies.
