Chapter 1

I woke up gasping.

My hand flew to the right side of my neck — the spot where Leo's mark used to sit, where the skin had been raised and warm for years, where I could press my fingers and feel the bond humming like a second heartbeat. Nothing. Smooth skin. Unmarked.

Sunlight poured through the curtains. White curtains with tiny silver threads my mother had sewn before she died. I knew those curtains. I knew this room. The lavender bedspread, the oak desk in the corner, the framed photo of me and my father at the Silverfang summer run when I was twelve.

I was eighteen.

I was in my childhood bedroom at the Silverfang pack house, and the morning light was warm on my face, and I was alive.

Seraphina hit me like a wall.

Not the tentative stirring of a wolf waking for the first time — not the gentle nudge that other wolves described at their Come of Age. She was already fully formed inside me, silver-furred and snarling, her claws dug into the floor of my consciousness with the weight of every single thing we had survived together. Every memory. Leo's hands on Leila's waist. The documents I found too late. The rogues breaking through the tree line while my mate stood fifty yards away and watched.

The fire.

Pierce.

I pressed both hands flat against the mattress and forced myself to breathe. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. The way the Silverfang healer taught pups who shifted too early and panicked.

"We're back," I whispered.

Seraphina growled. Low and certain. Not a question.

I sat on the edge of the bed for a long time. My legs were shaking. My body felt wrong — too light, too young, too unmarked. I kept touching my neck. I couldn't stop. The phantom weight of Leo's bite was still there, like a bruise that had healed on the surface but not underneath.

I made myself stand. I walked to the mirror on the back of my closet door and looked.

Eighteen. My hair was longer than I remembered. My face was softer, rounder — the angles that grief and exhaustion had carved into it in the first life hadn't happened yet. My eyes were the same. Maybe not. There was something behind them now that hadn't been there before.

Today was my Come of Age Ceremony. Tonight, the pack would gather in the ceremonial clearing, and I would shift for the first time — or what they would think was the first time — and Seraphina would emerge under the moonlight, and every wolf in attendance would see her.

And somewhere in that crowd, Leo Evans would be standing with his Ironvale delegation, and his cedar-and-smoke scent would roll through the clearing, and the mate bond would try to sink its teeth into me all over again.

I had one day.

I pulled the blank journal from my desk drawer. It was the one my father had given me last Christmas — leather-bound, with the Silverfang crest embossed on the cover. I'd never used it in the first life. I'd been too busy planning my move to Ironvale, too busy becoming Leo's Luna, too busy being blind.

I sat at the desk and started writing.

Not feelings. Not the scream that was building in my chest. Intelligence. I wrote the names of every agreement my father had signed with Ironvale — the anonymous resource-sharing transfers that Leila had architected and disguised as routine inter-pack support. I wrote the dates. I wrote the exact amounts, because I had found the ledgers in the first life, three years too late, and I had memorized every number in the hours before the rogues came. I wrote the names of the Silverfang wolves who had been quietly reassigned to Ironvale border rotations. I wrote Leila's name. I underlined it twice.

I locked the journal in my nightstand drawer and pocketed the key.

The knock came at four.

"Maia?" My father's voice. Deep, steady, unhurried. The voice of a man who had led the Silverfang Pack for twenty-six years and never once needed to raise it. "Ready to walk down?"

I opened the door. He was wearing his formal Alpha coat — dark grey, silver buttons, the Silverfang crest on the breast pocket. His hair was starting to grey at the temples. I hadn't noticed that in the first life. I hadn't noticed a lot of things.

"Ready," I said.

He looked at me. Not a glance — a look. The kind he gave pack members when something in their scent or their posture told him the words coming out of their mouth didn't match what was happening underneath.

"You look different," he said.

"New dress."

"That's not what I mean."

I held his gaze. For a moment I wanted to tell him everything. Every single thing. But David Ward was a man who needed evidence before he could act, and I didn't have evidence yet. I had a locked journal and a dead woman's memories.

"I'm just excited, Dad."

He studied me for another beat. Then he offered his arm, and I took it, and we walked together toward the ceremonial clearing.

The clearing was already full. Silverfang wolves lined the perimeter — warriors, families, elders, the younger wolves who hadn't shifted yet watching from the edges with wide eyes. Torches had been lit along the tree line, and the last of the daylight was bleeding out of the sky, turning everything gold and amber.

I saw Leila before she saw me.

She was standing near the front, wearing a deep green dress that set off her tawny hair, laughing at something one of the younger warriors had said. Beta female of Silverfang. My best friend since we were six years old. The girl who braided my hair before ceremonies and held my hand through my first practice shift and told me I was the bravest wolf she knew.

The girl who slept with my mate and stole my father's pack resources and watched me die.

She spotted me and her face lit up. That warm, conspiratorial smile — the one that made you feel like you were the only person in the room she actually wanted to talk to. She moved toward me with her arms already opening for the familiar loop, the way she always linked her arm through mine at pack events, pulling me close, whispering something funny.

"Maia! There you are. You look incredible. Come here, I saved us a spot near the —"

"Leila."

I said it quietly. Conversationally. The way you'd correct someone who had mispronounced a word.

She stopped. Her arm was still half-extended.

"We're done," I said. "Don't speak to me again."

The words landed in the space between us like a stone dropped into still water. Leila's face cycled — confusion first, then the manufactured hurt she wore like a second skin, her eyes going wide and soft. And then, underneath, something sharper. Something that looked a lot more like the real her.

"Maia, what are you —"

"I said don't."

I turned and walked toward my father's side. Behind me, the pack murmured. I could feel Leila's eyes on my back. I could feel the questions rippling through the crowd. I offered nothing.

Let them wonder.

The ceremony began at moonrise. The elder wolves spoke the old words. I stood in the center of the clearing with the other wolves coming of age, but I barely heard any of it, because that was when the scent hit me.

Cedar and smoke.

It rolled through the clearing like a living thing — warm, dark, consuming. My knees tried to buckle. My skin flushed hot. Every nerve ending in my body lit up and pointed in one direction, toward the tall figure standing at the edge of the Ironvale delegation.

Leo Evans. Alpha-heir. Broad-shouldered, dark-haired, green-eyed. Looking at me with the full, devastating intensity of a wolf who had just found his mate.

In the first life, I walked straight to him. I didn't even hesitate.

Seraphina snarled so hard my vision blurred.

I held my ground. The bond pulled. It pulled like a physical hand wrapped around my ribs, dragging me forward. I locked my knees. I breathed through my mouth so the scent couldn't settle any deeper.

Leo took a step toward me. His lips parted.

I looked him dead in the eyes. I let him see exactly what was behind mine — not the breathless, trembling girl he was expecting, but something cold and finished and absolutely certain.

Then I turned away and walked past him without a word.

I didn't look back. But I felt it. The crack. The first fracture in whatever version of this life he thought he was going to have.

The elder called my name. I stepped into the moonlight and let Seraphina come.

The shift was not gentle. It was not the tentative, stumbling first transformation the pack expected from an eighteen-year-old wolf. Seraphina erupted — silver-furred, luminescent, her coat catching the moonlight and throwing it back like something forged rather than born. She was larger than a first-shift wolf should be. Stronger. The assembled wolves went quiet. Not polite quiet. The deep, instinctive quiet of animals recognizing something above them in the order of things.

I felt her fully for the first time in this life. Not the shattered, grief-hollowed wolf who had died screaming in a field of smoke and blood. This Seraphina was rebuilt. Every scar folded into the architecture. Every memory sharpened into a blade.

When I shifted back, breathing hard, the ceremonial clearing was still silent. I found my father's eyes across the space.

David Ward was not a man whose face gave much away. But I saw it — the pride, yes, but underneath it something else. Something unsettled. As though the daughter who had walked into this clearing tonight was not entirely the one he had raised.

He was right.

She wasn't.
