Chapter 2

The voice on the other end of the line went silent for a heartbeat. Then: "Stay on the line. Don't hang up. Where are you?"

"Silverclaw," I managed, each word scraping my throat raw. "Pack House. Third floor. East wing."

"I'm coming. Hold on."

The line stayed open. I could hear movement on his end—sharp commands, doors slamming, engines roaring to life. The sounds kept me tethered to consciousness even as my vision darkened at the edges.

Thunder rumbled outside my window. Rain began to hammer against the glass.

I don't know how long I lay there. Time stretched and contracted. The mark on my neck pulsed with each labored breath, rejecting me, killing me slowly from the inside out.

Then I heard it. Shouting. Snarling. The crash of bodies hitting walls.

The door to my room exploded inward.

A massive figure filled the doorway, backlit by the hallway lights. For a moment, I thought it was Roman coming to finish what he'd started. But the scent hit me—cedar and rain and something wild that made my dying wolf stir for the first time in hours.

He crossed the room in two strides and dropped to his knees beside me.

The moment his hand touched my arm, electricity shot through my body. Not the burning pain of Roman's forced mark, but something else entirely. Something that felt like coming home.

I gasped, my back arching off the floor.

"Easy," he said, his voice rough but gentle. "I've got you."

He scooped me up like I weighed nothing. His arms were solid and warm, and for the first time in three years, I felt safe.

"Silverclaw patrol incoming," someone shouted from the hallway.

"Then we go through them," he said.

I caught glimpses as he carried me out. Wolves in combat. Blood on the walls. His men—massive, efficient, brutal—clearing a path through Roman's guards. The storm raged outside, lightning illuminating the carnage in stark flashes.

Someone lunged at us. He shifted his grip on me, using one arm to hold me close while the other caught the attacker by the throat and slammed him into the wall hard enough to crack the plaster.

"Anyone else?" His voice carried the weight of an Alpha King.

No one moved.

He carried me out into the rain. It soaked through my clothes in seconds, but I didn't care. Each drop felt like it was washing away Roman's touch, his lies, his poison.

A black SUV waited at the edge of the property. He slid into the back seat with me still in his arms, and we were moving before the door even closed.

"Drive," he commanded.

I tried to look at his face, but my vision kept blurring. All I could make out were sharp features and eyes that gleamed silver in the darkness.

"Grace," I whispered.

"I know," he said. "I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Then everything went black.

---

I woke to white walls and the smell of antiseptic.

Panic hit first. Hospital. Medical suite. Dahlia's smug face. Grace's heart beating in someone else's chest.

I tried to sit up, but my body wouldn't cooperate.

"Don't." That voice again, the one from the phone. "You're safe. You're in Blood Moon territory."

I turned my head. He sat in a chair beside the bed, elbows on his knees, watching me with an intensity that should have been frightening but somehow wasn't.

In the daylight streaming through the window, I could finally see him clearly. Dark hair. Strong jaw. A scar cutting across his left shoulder, visible where his shirt collar gaped. And those eyes—silver-gray, like storm clouds.

"Who are you?" My voice came out hoarse.

"Jonathan Hill. Alpha King of the Blood Moon Pack." He leaned forward. "And I was supposed to be your sister's mate."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "What?"

"Three years ago, I felt the pull toward Silverclaw territory. The mate bond calling me. But Roman had his borders locked down tight. By the time I fought my way through, Grace was already gone." His hands clenched into fists. "I swore a blood oath that night. To protect her, even in death. To watch over anyone she loved."

"You knew her?"

"I never got the chance." Pain flickered across his face. "But I felt her. The bond was there, waiting. And then it just... vanished."

I closed my eyes. Grace had a mate. A real one. And Roman had stolen that from her too.

"The oath extends to you," Jonathan said quietly. "You're under my protection now. No one will hurt you here."

I breathed in, testing. There it was again—that scent of cedar and rain. It wrapped around me like a blanket, soothing the raw edges of my shattered wolf.

So different from Roman's suffocating presence.

"How long have I been here?"

"Three days. Your body was shutting down. The forced mark, the Alpha command, the rejection—it nearly killed you." His jaw tightened. "But you're healing now."

I touched my neck. The mark was still there, but it felt different. Cooler. Less like it was trying to burn through my skin.

"What happens now?"

"Now you rest. You heal. And when you're ready, we figure out what comes next." He stood, moving toward the door. "I'll have food sent up. You need to eat."

"Jonathan."

He paused, looking back.

"Thank you. For coming. For saving me."

Something shifted in his expression. "I should have come sooner. Should have fought harder to reach Grace. I won't make that mistake twice."

Then he was gone, leaving me alone with the scent of cedar and rain and the first fragile hope I'd felt in years.

---

Two weeks passed. My body healed faster than I expected, the Blood Moon healers working miracles. I could walk without trembling. Eat without nausea. Sleep without nightmares of Roman's cold eyes.

Jonathan visited every day. Sometimes we talked. Sometimes we just sat in comfortable silence. He told me about Grace's memorial garden, about the phone number he'd kept active all these years just in case.

I told him about the mating ceremony. About Dahlia. About the heart.

His rage was a living thing, but he never directed it at me. Only at the walls, the furniture, the memory of Roman Wallace.

I was in the rehabilitation gym, working through exercises to rebuild my strength, when my phone buzzed.

The burner phone. The one Grace had given me.

I almost didn't look. But something made me pick it up.

One new message. Video file. Unknown sender.

My hands shook as I pressed play.

Dahlia's face filled the screen. She was wearing Grace's necklace—the silver one with the moon pendant that had been our mother's.

"Hello, Elaina," she purred. "I thought you deserved to know the truth. The whole truth."

The camera shifted. I saw a room I didn't recognize. Medical equipment. And Grace, strapped to a table, her eyes wide with terror.

"Please," Grace's voice, thin and desperate. "Please, I have a sister. She needs me. Please don't do this."

Roman stepped into frame. He looked at Grace with cold calculation. "It's already done."

"The surgery was fascinating," Dahlia's voice continued over the footage. "She fought so hard. Right up until the anesthesia kicked in. And Roman—he never looked away. He watched them cut her open and take what was mine."

The video cut back to Dahlia's face. She smiled, touching the necklace. "Her heart beats so strong in my chest. I can feel her sometimes, trying to fight her way out. But she's mine now. Just like Roman is mine. Just like everything she had is mine."

She leaned closer to the camera. "If you ever come back, he'll finish what he started. You're nothing, Elaina. You always were. A placeholder. A ghost. And ghosts should stay buried."

The video ended.

I stood there, phone clutched in my hand, watching my reflection in the gym's mirrored wall.

Something had changed in my eyes. The fear was still there. The grief. But underneath it, something else was growing.

Something cold and hard and absolutely certain.

They killed my sister. They stole her heart. They tried to kill me.

And they thought I would just disappear.

I looked down at the phone, then back at my reflection.

No more running. No more hiding.

They wanted a ghost?

I'd give them a reckoning instead.
