Chapter 4

The welcome dinner was set for seven.

I knew this because I had done the setting myself — the good china, the cream tablecloth, the low candle arrangement the Luna preferred for family occasions. My hands knew where everything lived. They had always known.

Madeleine came down in a pale green dress that caught the candlelight. Rhett pulled out her chair first, the seat nearest the Luna, the seat I had occupied for eight years at this table. He did it without thinking about it. The way you move a lamp when you need the outlet.

I took the chair at the far end.

Owen was beside me. He sat down heavily, like a man twice his age, and stared at his plate. His two sisters settled on my other side without meeting anyone's eyes. We were, the four of us, arranged with the particular geometric accuracy of people who have been placed rather than seated.

The Omega end of the table.

No one said it. No one had to.

The Luna raised her glass and gave a small speech about new beginnings and pack continuity and the honor due a fallen warrior's widow. Her voice was warm and measured, the voice she used at ceremonies. Rhett nodded along. Madeleine's eyes were bright with something that might have been gratitude, or might have been the performance of it — the two were, in her case, difficult to separate.

Across the table, over the rim of the Luna's crystal, Madeleine's gaze found my pendant.

Just a glance. A quick, cataloguing look, the kind a woman gives something she is deciding whether to want. Then it slid away.

I reached up and touched the pendant once, the flat of my thumb against the Healer's crest, the silver warm from my skin. I lowered my hand.

I ate. The food was mine — I had cooked it — and it tasted like nothing in particular.

Later, across the candles, Madeleine laughed at something Rhett said and put her hand over his on the table, and the Luna smiled, and Owen's fork made a small, involuntary sound against his plate.

I looked at my glass.

Sable said nothing inside me. She had stopped talking some time ago. She was just there — a warm, grieving weight behind my ribs — and sometimes that was the most honest thing either of us could do.

Madeleine's eyes found the pendant a second time before dessert was cleared.

I noticed. I was meant to notice. That, too, was part of it.

---

Two mornings later I was dressing when I heard the floorboard in the hallway — the third one from the staircase, the one that always creaked — and then Madeleine was in my doorway.

She leaned against the frame with the easy comfort of someone standing in their own house. Her silk robe was pale blue, her hair loose, her face carrying that particular morning softness she deployed with precision. Her eyes went to the pendant at my throat before they went to my face.

They stayed there.

'I've been meaning to mention,' she said. Her voice was light, careful, the tone of someone raising a delicate subject they have thought about more than once. 'That piece is really something. The craftsmanship.' A small tilt of her head. 'A thing like that — it really ought to be a family heirloom. Properly kept. It seems a shame, sitting in a guest room.'

I didn't answer.

I finished fastening the pendant's clasp and straightened the chain against my collarbone. My hands were steady. My eyes found hers in the mirror and held.

One beat. Two.

Madeleine stepped forward.

I turned and stepped back in the same motion — one clean step — and her reaching hand closed on air.

Something shifted in her face. The softness dropped out of it, fast and complete, like a lamp switching off. What was underneath was not ugly, exactly. It was just precise. The face of someone who has decided that the polite approach has run its course.

She lunged.

It was not graceful. Her fingers found the chain — not the pendant, the chain — and her fist wrenched sideways and down with the full intention of someone who has decided the cost of damage is acceptable. The silver bit into my throat, a thin, bright line of pain, and then the clasp snapped.

The sound it made was very small.

Madeleine stumbled back two steps, pendant in her fist, and then — with a timing that would have been impressive if it hadn't been so cold — she began to fall apart. Her free hand flew to her belly. Her face crumpled. A sound climbed out of her throat, high and frightened, and she sagged against the doorframe with the full convincing weight of a woman in crisis.

'Rhett—'

He was in the hallway in seconds. He must have been close. He must have been waiting, I thought, somewhere just out of frame, the way you wait when you know a scene is about to need a witness.

He took in the room in one sweeping look — Madeleine trembling, her hand pressed to her stomach, the pendant visible in her closed fist — and he made his choice.

Three seconds. Maybe less.

He crossed the kitchen in two strides and hit me skull-first into the marble counter — deliberate, his weight behind it, not a shove but a removal — and the world went briefly white and sharp and then settled into a high, sustained ringing.

I don't remember sliding down. I was standing, and then I was on the floor, my back against the cabinet, one hand already moving to my temple with the automatic precision of someone who has been trained to assess before anything else.

Warm. Shallow at the outer edge. Deeper toward the crown. I pressed and catalogued the pressure response.

Across the kitchen, Rhett had gathered Madeleine into his arms. She was crying in earnest now, or something that sounded like crying — soft, exhausted, the cry of a woman who has been through too much. Her hand was still closed around my mother's pendant.

He ran.

The door swung shut behind them.

I sat on the kitchen floor and listened to my own breathing and watched a small dark smear of my blood on the marble counter lip, and I thought: *assess the wound.* So I did. Steady hands, even pressure, systematic. My mother's voice somewhere behind the ringing — *begin at the scalp line and work inward.*

The ringing faded slowly.

The kitchen was very quiet.

Sable did not weep. She did not howl. She sat inside me like a stone at the bottom of very still water, and I understood, in the clean and terrible way you understand things that cannot be taken back, that this was the last thing.

Not the dinner. Not the Omega chair. Not the stew, or the curtains, or eight years of my labor consumed and unremarked.

This.

The pendant had been warm from my skin when she took it. My mother's pendant. The one thing in this house that had never belonged to Rhett Martinez.

I sat on the floor and pressed my palm to my temple and did not call after him.

There was nothing left in me that wanted to.
