Chapter 1

My son was set to marry on Thanksgiving Day. I was in a boutique in downtown Dublin, trying on a formal dress for the ceremony when Kolton burst in.

Seeing him, I enthusiastically held up the dress I had chosen. "This purple gown is elegant, and the other one..."

Before I could finish, Kolton snatched the dress from my hands and threw it to the floor. "Mom, I'd rather you not come to my wedding. It'll look awkward with you sitting there all by yourself. Dad and Khloe look so happy and polished, and a well-organized wedding will reflect positively on you too, right?"

My lips quivered with disbelief. "You don't want me at your wedding but you're inviting that disgrace of a father? Have you forgotten what he did when you were little..."

Kolton cut me off, irritated. "Enough, Mom. That was ages ago. Why can't you move on? It’s pointless. Even if Dad didn’t like you, I’m still his son, and we share a bond you could never understand."

Fine. I don’t understand. If they have such a tight father-son connection, then surely his father will handle everything perfectly. Everything I prepared must seem beneath him.

My divorce from Trenton was far from dignified. Once he made some money, he decided I was no longer good enough and refused to divide our assets fairly. He teamed up with his girlfriend to torment me at home.

At the time, I couldn’t accept it. I thought, after all the hardship we endured together, fine, divorce, but I deserve half of what we built. The result was endless arguments and fights. The worst was when Trenton dumped a pot of boiling water over me while I was holding Kolton, trying to soothe him to sleep. The burn was a metaphor for our decaying relationship, with my skin blistering instantly. A large blister even formed on Kolton’s cheek.

Instead of taking us to the hospital, Trenton glared at us with malice. "Meredith, every day you delay, I'll hurt you again. I know you’re not afraid, but what about your son?"

Panicking, I shot back, "You're heartless. Kolton is your son too. Even animals protect their young."

He sneered at me, "Sons? Plenty of people want to have my sons. If I lose one, I can easily have more."

He cruelly pressed down on Kolton's blister, grinning malevolently. That time, I was truly terrified. For Kolton's sake, I agreed to leave without taking anything.

Due to my limited education and skills, I had to take the dirtiest and toughest jobs. With no one to care for Kolton, I carried him on my back while moving bricks at construction sites and working sewing machines in factories. This struggle lasted nearly a decade. When Kolton began high school, I finally found some stability by opening a small quilt shop in town after years of hard work. It wasn't easy, and quilting was a tough job that few wanted to do, allowing me to make a living.

Kolton was under immense pressure during his final year of high school. Determined to improve his nutrition, no matter how busy or tired I was, I personally cooked healthy meals and brought them to him. Sometimes, I was so busy that I’d find bits of thread clinging to my eyelashes.

That year, Kolton turned eighteen, his young frame lanky. He gently brushed the thread from my lashes, looking at me with those earnest, wide eyes, and made a solemn promise. "Mom, I will study hard, get into a good college, and earn lots of money so that you can have the best life."

That promise still echoes in my ears, yet the son I raised now scorns my single status and deems me too unpresentable to attend his wedding. He even claims I don’t understand the blood ties that bind him so deeply to his father.

I brought the original drafts of the Lloyd Center to my stepsister’s high-society pool party, hoping the gift would finally earn my family's respect. I stood on the edge of the limestone patio, clutching the leather portfolio as fifty pairs of judgmental eyes watched my every move. But the moment I handed the sketches to Corina, she retracted her hand, letting the portfolio sink into the chlorine before throwing herself into the pool with a theatrical scream. My fiancé, Julian, didn't hesitate; he shoved me aside with enough force to twist my ankle and dove in to rescue her. He surfaced with Corina in his arms, looking at me with a mask of pure disgust while the crowd whispered that I was an unstable, illegitimate intruder. My stepmother Eugenia didn't even ask for an explanation before she stepped forward and slapped me across the face, ordering me to get out before she called the police. "Sister, if you're still mad about the inheritance, just say it. Why did you push me?" "Enough! God, Aria. Your jealousy is actually sickening." I stood on shaking legs, looking at the man who had promised to know my heart for two years, only to realize he was just another wolf in the pack. The humiliation burned hotter than the sting on my face, and I realized that in their eyes, I would always be the trash they needed to take out. I yanked the diamond ring off my finger, slammed it onto a table, and walked away from my old life forever. To claim my trust fund and survive, I walked into a dive bar and offered a marriage contract to a broke, mysterious artist named Harland. I thought I was just buying a temporary shield, but I didn't realize that my "poor" new husband was actually a billionaire predator who was already planning to burn my family's empire to the ground.
