Chapter 3

The Beta council meeting provided the perfect cover. Augustus moved through Shadowridge's grand hall with practiced ease, his silver-blue eyes scanning the room as pack leaders discussed trade agreements. I watched from the shadows, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"Remember," Luna whispered inside me, "his safety depends on ours."

I nodded imperceptibly, adjusting the communication device hidden beneath my clothing. The tiny microphone would transmit everything to our secure location in Nightstone territory.

Augustus caught my eye briefly as he passed, his expression unreadable to anyone but me. The slight tilt of his head was our signal—he was ready.

"While Alpha Nolan entertains our guests," Augustus announced to the gathered Betas, "I'll be reviewing the territorial maps in his office. Please continue your discussions."

The moment he disappeared down the corridor, I slipped away from the great hall, my footsteps silent against the marble floors. Luna guided me through the lesser-known passages of the pack house, avoiding the guards Nolan had posted.

"He's in position," came the whispered update through my earpiece.

I closed my eyes, focusing on the mental image of Augustus moving through Nolan's office. The miniature recording devices were no larger than a fingernail, designed to blend into woodwork and furniture. Each one would capture conversations within a fifteen-foot radius.

"Device one planted," Augustus's voice came through, steady and controlled. "Moving to the Luna's quarters."

I moved to my designated position near Elisa's rooms, timing my arrival perfectly. As Augustus installed the final device in the meeting chamber, I heard the first conversation clearly through my earpiece.

"The ninth attempt should finally work," Nolan's voice, unmistakable in its cold calculation.

Elisa's laugh sent chills down my spine. "She's been so pathetically trusting. Did you see her face when you told her the healer said the baby was strong?"

"The inheritance documents are prepared," Nolan continued. "Once she's gone, we'll absorb her territories within a month."

"And no one will question it," Elisa added. "A tragic death in pregnancy. So sad."

I bit my lip until I tasted blood, forcing myself to remain silent as Luna howled with rage inside me.

---

The training field stretched before me, packed dirt softened by morning dew. Wolves from both packs gathered to witness what they believed was routine pregnancy training—a demonstration of how expectant mothers maintained strength during the vulnerable months.

What they didn't know was that this was my funeral.

"Remember," Augustus had instructed earlier, "the dosage must be precise. Too much will kill you both."

I trusted him with my life—with my pup's life. As I stepped into the center of the field, Nolan's eyes followed me with barely concealed anticipation.

"Elena," he called out, his voice carrying false concern, "are you certain you should participate today?"

I smiled weakly, playing my part. "The healer said light exercise would strengthen the pup."

Augustus approached with a water bottle, his movements casual but his eyes intense. "A special electrolyte blend," he announced to the watching crowd.

The liquid tasted bitter as it slid down my throat. Augustus had calculated the exact amount of wolfsbane to mimic death without causing it—a dangerous balance that would require immediate treatment.

Within minutes, my vision blurred. My knees buckled as I collapsed onto the field, my body convulsing in what appeared to be violent poisoning.

"Elena!" Nolan's voice seemed distant as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision.

Chaos erupted around me. Through dimming awareness, I heard Augustus shouting orders, felt hands lifting me onto a stretcher.

"Get her to the medical tent," he commanded. "Now!"

The last thing I heard before consciousness slipped away was Nolan's voice, trembling with what others would interpret as grief but I recognized as relief.

"My Luna," he sobbed, loud enough for witnesses. "Hold on."

---

The memorial service was held at dusk, my body—or what everyone believed was my body—laid to rest in a hurried ceremony. From my hidden vantage point, I watched Nolan's performance with hollow eyes.

"Her light will never fade," he intoned, his voice breaking at precisely the right moments.

Luna snarled inside me. "Look at his eyes," she urged. "See the satisfaction."

I did. Beneath his grief-stricken facade, Nolan couldn't quite hide the gleam of triumph.

After the ceremony, while mourners dispersed and sympathy cards piled up, Augustus's devices captured the moment we'd been waiting for.

In Nolan's office, Elisa poured expensive wine into crystal glasses. "To success," she toasted, her voice rich with victory.

Nolan signed the inheritance documents with a flourish, his hand steady now that the performance was over. "To new beginnings."

"And to doubling our territories," Elisa added, "once Malayah's relationship with Marcus bears fruit."

Nolan's laugh was cold as winter. "The Thornwood merger will make us unstoppable."

I clutched the recording device in my hand, feeling its weight like a weapon. They thought they'd won.

They had no idea what was coming.
