Chapter 3

The morning sun filtered through my childhood bedroom window as I folded the last of my belongings into the worn leather suitcase. Each item felt heavier than it should—the business files from our shared projects, the few personal belongings I'd accumulated during three years in the Shadowmoon Pack, the rejection papers now bearing both our signatures from that agonizing night in the grove.

Brandon had left for a three-day business trip to the Eastern Territories, discussing some expansion deal that would further cement his pack's growing influence. The irony wasn't lost on me—he was building the empire we'd planned together while I prepared to walk away from it all.

I pulled out a piece of pack stationary and wrote carefully:

*Brandon,

By the time you read this, I'll be gone. The rejection is final, and I won't be returning to Shadowmoon Pack. Don't look for me.

Isabel*

Short. Clean. Final.

Marcus appeared in my doorway as I zipped the suitcase closed, his weathered face creased with concern. "You sure about this, Isabel? There might be another way—"

"There isn't." I lifted the suitcase, surprised by how light it felt now that the decision was made. "Take care of yourself, Marcus. And... take care of the pack. They'll need you more than ever now."

He nodded slowly, understanding passing between us. Marcus had always been more than Brandon's Beta—he'd been a friend, a voice of reason when Alpha pride threatened to override common sense. "Your parents know you're coming?"

"They will soon enough."

The drive to Moonrise Pack territory took two hours through winding forest roads that grew more familiar with each mile. My wolf stirred for the first time since the rejection, recognizing the scents of home—pine and wildflowers, the clean scent of the mountain stream that bordered our lands.

By the time I pulled into my parents' driveway, my hands were shaking.

Mom appeared on the front porch before I'd even turned off the engine, her maternal instincts somehow sensing my arrival. She took one look at my face, at the single suitcase in my hand, and her expression crumbled.

"Oh, sweetheart." She pulled me into her arms, and the dam I'd built around my emotions finally burst.

I collapsed against her, three years of hidden pain pouring out in broken sobs. "He chose her, Mom. He chose Winnie, and I lost... I lost everything."

"I know, baby. I know." She stroked my hair the way she had when I was small, her voice thick with her own tears. "Come inside. You're home now."

Dad appeared in the living room doorway, his Alpha presence immediately shifting to protective father mode when he saw my tear-streaked face. "What did he do?"

The story came out in fragments—the secret mating, the pregnancy, the miscarriage during Brandon's claiming ceremony, the rejection ritual. My parents listened without judgment, their faces growing darker with each revelation.

"Three years," Dad said finally, his voice deadly quiet. "Three years you suffered in silence."

"I thought... I thought if I was patient, if I proved myself valuable to the pack, he'd eventually—" I couldn't finish the sentence. It sounded so naive now.

"You were never the problem, Isabel." Mom's voice carried the steel that made her a formidable Luna. "A true mate doesn't hide his bond. A true Alpha doesn't abandon his pregnant mate for political gain."

That evening, as I sat in my childhood bedroom surrounded by familiar things, my phone buzzed with an unknown number.

*"Isabel, this is Kylian Ferguson. I heard about your expertise in territorial mediation from Alpha Carter. Would you be interested in consulting on a boundary dispute between Silverfang and Riverside Packs? The work would be neutral territory, good compensation. No pressure if you're not ready."*

I stared at the message for a long moment. Alpha Kylian Ferguson—I'd met him briefly at pack alliance meetings, remembered him as thoughtful and respectful, unlike many Alphas who dismissed unmated females. The work would be a distraction, something to focus on besides the hollow ache where my mate bond used to be.

*"I'm interested. When do we start?"*

His response came quickly: *"Tomorrow, if you're available. The Riverside Pack has agreed to neutral ground meetings at the Clearwater Conference Center. I'll send details."*

For the first time since the rejection, I felt a spark of something that might have been hope. Not for love—that felt impossible now—but for purpose. For a future that didn't revolve around being someone's secret.

As I drifted off to sleep in my childhood bed, I didn't know that forty miles away, Brandon was discovering my note and howling his rage to the empty pack house. I didn't know he would spend the next several hours driving like a madman toward Moonrise Pack, alternating between fury and desperation.

All I knew was that for the first time in months, I could breathe.
