Chapter 2

I woke before dawn, my body clock trained by years of early morning gallery prep. The hotel suite felt sterile and safe, nothing like the apartment where August still lay sleeping off whatever celebration had been more important than our eight years together.

Methodical. That's what I needed to be now. I made a list on hotel stationary, my handwriting steady despite the tremor in my chest. Personal items only. Documents. The bracelet my mother gave me before our estrangement—the one I'd hidden in my jewelry box because August called it "ostentatious." Photographs from before him, when I still recognized myself.

I left everything we'd built together. The Egyptian cotton sheets we'd saved for. The coffee table we'd assembled on a Sunday morning, laughing at the incomprehensible instructions. The life-sized sculpture of intertwined figures that August claimed represented "our eternal bond." Let him keep his symbols. I wanted nothing that would remind me of how foolish I'd been.

The movers arrived at ten, professional and discreet. I supervised as they packed my boxes with military precision, each item a small reclamation of self. My business suits—the ones August said made me look "corporate" with such disdain. My books on finance and market analysis, relegated to the back of our shared bookshelf. The laptop where I'd managed every aspect of the gallery's success while he took credit for "artistic vision."

Before leaving, I placed a single note beside his coffee maker, the expensive Italian machine I'd bought him for his birthday. My handwriting looked foreign on the cream cardstock: "I've moved out. Contact me only through my attorney. The number is below."

James Chen's office smelled like leather and old money, the kind of establishment that inspired confidence through understated elegance. I'd chosen him carefully—Harvard Law, specializing in business partnerships and asset protection. His reputation for thoroughness preceded him.

"I want a complete financial audit of Gray Gallery," I said, sliding a folder across his mahogany desk. "Every transaction, every investment, every loan. I need to know exactly what I own."

James reviewed my documentation with the focused intensity of a surgeon. Bank statements, investment records, the original partnership agreement I'd insisted on years ago when August called lawyers "creativity killers." Thank God I'd listened to my instincts then.

"Ms. Harris, based on these preliminary documents, you appear to own seventy-three percent of the gallery's assets." His voice carried no surprise, just professional assessment. "Your initial investment, subsequent funding, and operational contributions create a substantial claim."

My phone buzzed. August's name flashed across the screen for the fifth time in an hour. I declined the call and powered it off.

"Draft the separation documents," I said. "I want a clean break. Complete dissolution of our business partnership with fair market compensation for my shares."

By evening, I'd returned to the Grandview's elegant sanctuary. Room service arrived with precision—salmon, asparagus, a glass of Sancerre that tasted like freedom. I was reviewing James's preliminary findings when the front desk called.

"Ms. Harris, there's a gentleman in the lobby asking for you. He's... quite insistent."

I knew before they said his name. August's voice carried through the marble lobby before I even stepped off the elevator, raw with panic and indignation. He looked like he'd slept in his clothes—wrinkled button-down, hair disheveled, eyes wild with the kind of desperation that comes from losing control.

"Dahlia!" He lunged toward me as I approached, grabbing my arm with fingers that trembled. "What the hell are you doing? This is insane. You can't just—"

"Remove your hand." My voice cut through his rambling with surgical precision. Other guests had stopped to stare, their conversations dying as they witnessed his unraveling.

He didn't let go. "You're overreacting about nothing. Cora is just a friend who understands the art world. You're trying to sabotage my career out of jealousy."

Jealousy. The word hung between us like a slap. I looked down at his fingers gripping my arm—the same hand that had worn our ring while touching another woman, that had signed his name to success I'd funded, that had never trembled when he'd dismissed my contributions as "just business."

I peeled his fingers away one by one, my movements deliberate and final. "You wore our ring while touching another woman. You forgot our anniversary for her party. You've made your priorities clear."

The lobby's crystal chandelier cast harsh shadows across his face as reality began to penetrate his panic. "Dahlia, please—"

"We're done personally, and we're separating professionally. All further communication goes through my attorney, James Chen." I placed his business card in August's trembling palm, the cream cardstock stark against his paint-stained fingers. "His card."

I turned and walked toward the elevator, my heels clicking against marble with absolute finality. Behind me, August stood frozen, the card fluttering in his hand like a white flag of surrender.

The elevator doors closed on his stricken face, and I felt something cold and certain settle in my chest where love used to live.

On the night of the Full Moon Banquet, I stood in my mother's white silk dress, waiting for my childhood sweetheart, Chace, to finally claim me as his mate. He even threatened to dig up my dead mother's bones and feed them to wild dogs because Karyn called her a traitor. He thought he had broken me. He didn't know the poison hadn't killed me. It had dissolved the seal on my core, waking up a bloodline thought to be extinct. I wasn't a weak Omega. I was a White Wolf.
