Chapter 3

I stood in the bank lobby, my face a perfect mask of composure despite the humiliation burning through me. Sterling's smug expression told me he thought he'd won this round. The branch manager, Marcus Chen, avoided my gaze, his nervousness betraying his complicity in this charade.

"You heard me, Elise," Sterling said, his voice carrying through the lobby. "Leave now, or I'll have you arrested."

I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone, ignoring his threat. The security guards shifted uncomfortably, clearly unsure who to listen to.

"Who are you calling?" Zara demanded, her voice shrill with barely contained triumph.

I didn't answer her. Instead, I dialed my assistant's number, my fingers steady despite the fury building inside me.

"Ms. Daniels," my assistant answered immediately, his voice professional and calm.

"I need you to review our portfolio diversification strategy," I said, using the coded language we'd developed over years of working together. "Specifically, I'd like you to analyze the Torres family's market position and identify any... vulnerabilities."

There was a brief pause as my assistant processed my instructions. "I understand. Should I prepare the usual assessment?"

"Comprehensive," I replied, my eyes never leaving Sterling's face. "Include all peripheral assets and historical performance indicators."

"Of course. I'll have the preliminary findings ready within the hour."

I ended the call, slipping my phone back into my purse. Sterling watched me with narrowed eyes, clearly trying to figure out what had just happened.

"What was that about?" he demanded.

"Business," I replied simply. "Something you clearly don't understand."

---

Two hours later, I sat in my car across from the bank, watching through tinted windows as the first signs of my counterattack materialized. My assistant had worked quickly, identifying the Torres family's financial vulnerabilities and orchestrating a precision strike.

"Ms. Daniels," my assistant's voice came through the car's speaker system. "The first phase is complete. Blackstone Capital has just pulled their investment from Torres Industries' flagship project."

I nodded, though he couldn't see me. "And the others?"

"Meridian Wealth Management is reviewing their position as we speak. Three other major investors have requested emergency meetings with the Torres family."

On my tablet, I could see the notifications flooding in—news alerts about sudden changes in the Torres family's business relationships. The financial world moved quickly in Manhattan, and rumors spread like wildfire among the elite circles.

"Make sure the right people hear about the... irregularities in their accounting practices," I instructed, my voice cool and detached.

"Already done. Several key players have received anonymous tips about potential ethical concerns. The financial press is picking up the story as we speak."

Through my window, I watched as Sterling emerged from the bank, his phone pressed to his ear. Even from this distance, I could see the panic spreading across his face as he took call after call.

---

The bank's glass doors swung open again, but this time it wasn't Sterling returning. A tall man in an impeccable suit strode purposefully through the entrance, flanked by two assistants. I recognized him immediately—James Harrington, Regional Director for Manhattan Private Banking.

I stepped out of my car and walked toward the entrance, timing my arrival perfectly.

Mr. Harrington's eyes widened as he spotted me. "Ms. Daniels! I came as soon as I heard about this... unfortunate situation."

Inside the bank, Marcus Chen had gone pale. He stood frozen behind the customer service desk as Mr. Harrington approached him directly.

"Marcus," Mr. Harrington said, his voice cold and authoritative. "You're relieved of duty, effective immediately."

"But sir—" Marcus began.

"Now." Mr. Harrington turned to me, his expression shifting to one of profound regret. "Ms. Daniels, on behalf of Manhattan Private Banking, I want to offer my deepest apologies for this unacceptable breach of trust."

I nodded slightly, accepting his words without comment.

"I've ordered a full investigation into the account tampering," he continued. "We take matters of fraud extremely seriously."

As he spoke, I noticed Zara being escorted toward the back office by security personnel. Her face had lost its triumphant smile, replaced by something closer to fear.

"The preliminary findings suggest deliberate manipulation of account information," Mr. Harrington explained, lowering his voice. "Someone with access to the system altered your documentation to list Mr. Torres as the primary account holder."

"And what happens to those responsible?" I asked quietly.

Mr. Harrington's gaze hardened. "They will face the full consequences of their actions, Ms. Daniels. I can assure you of that."

As we spoke, Sterling burst through the doors, his face flushed with anger and panic. But his eyes widened when he saw Mr. Harrington standing beside me, and for the first time since this ordeal began, I saw real fear flash across his face.
