Betrayed by Fated Mate Chapter 1

The full moon bathed the clearing in silver light, casting an ethereal glow over the gathered pack members. Their faces blurred into a sea of expectant smiles as I stood beside Alexander, my heart thundering against my ribs. This was everything I'd dreamed of since I was a little girl—finding my fated mate, becoming Luna of a powerful pack, starting our forever.

"Are you ready?" Alexander whispered, his breath warm against my ear. His eyes, the color of burnished amber, held mine with an intensity that made my knees weak.

I nodded, unable to form words as the pack Elder stepped forward, his weathered hands raising toward the moon.

"Under the watchful eye of the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness the sacred bond between Alpha Alexander Kane and his chosen mate, Victoria Sterling," the Elder's voice carried across the hushed clearing. "May their union strengthen the Shadowmoon Pack and bring forth powerful heirs."

Alexander's fingers tightened around mine as we recited our vows. The traditional words flowed from my lips like honey, sweet promises of devotion and loyalty that I meant with every fiber of my being. When it came time for the marking, I tilted my head, exposing the vulnerable curve of my neck.

"Mine," Alexander growled, his voice deepening with his wolf's presence. His teeth grazed my skin before sinking in, sending a shock of pain-laced pleasure through my body.

Inside me, my wolf howled in recognition. *Mate*, she sang, the word echoing through my consciousness as the bond solidified between us. The connection bloomed like wildfire, spreading warmth through my veins until I could feel Alexander's presence in my mind—a comforting weight that told me I would never be alone again.

As he pulled away, a drop of blood trailing from his lip, the pack erupted in cheers. I was Luna Victoria Kane now, bound forever to the man who held my heart.

"I love you," I whispered, dizzy with happiness.

His smile didn't quite reach his eyes, but I attributed it to the overwhelming nature of the ceremony. "And I you," he replied, pressing a kiss to my forehead.

Later that night, as we lay in our bed, a sharp pain lanced through my abdomen. I gasped, clutching at my swollen belly. At seven months pregnant, I wasn't due for weeks.

"Alexander," I panted, panic rising as another contraction hit. "Something's wrong."

His face paled as he saw the wetness spreading across the sheets. "The baby's coming," he said, already pulling on clothes. "Too early."

The ride to the hospital passed in a blur of pain and fear. I clutched Alexander's hand, drawing strength from his steady presence as doctors rushed around us, their voices urgent.

"The baby's in distress," I heard someone say. "We need to deliver now."

Hours later, exhausted and trembling, I heard the feeble cry of our son. He was so small, so fragile, his tiny body connected to machines that dwarfed him.

"Michael," I whispered when they finally let me hold him. "Michael Kane."

Alexander stood at the window of the neonatal intensive care unit, his back rigid as he stared at our son. There was something unreadable in his expression—not quite the joy I'd expected from a new father.

"He's perfect," I said, trying to draw him closer.

Before he could respond, a nurse came to take Michael back to his incubator. I reluctantly let go, already missing the weight of him in my arms.

As darkness fell, I drifted in and out of sleep, the beeping of hospital monitors a constant reminder of our precarious situation. It was during one of these moments, suspended between wakefulness and dreams, that Alexander's voice cut through my mind.

*Victoria. Can you hear me?*

I startled, focusing on our mate bond. *Yes. What's wrong?*

His mental voice came through strained, almost desperate. *I've been captured by Rogue King Marcus Black. He's demanding a ransom—$666,000.*

Ice flooded my veins. *What? How? Where are you?*

*I don't know exactly. They ambushed me outside the hospital. Victoria, you need to get the money. He says he'll kill me if you don't.*

Tears sprang to my eyes as I struggled to sit up, ignoring the pain from my recent delivery. *I'll find a way. I promise.*

The connection faded, leaving me alone in the sterile hospital room. Through the window, I could see Michael in his incubator, fighting for every breath. My newborn son and my captured mate—both needing me more than ever.

I placed my hand against the glass, a vow forming in my heart. "I'll save you both," I whispered. "Whatever it takes. Whatever it costs me. I swear on the Moon Goddess herself, I will bring your father home to you, Michael."

Little did I know the price of that promise would be measured in blood—both mine and my innocent son's.
