Chapter 3

The morning sun streamed through our bedroom windows as Lucian adjusted his tie, preparing for another day of Alpha duties. I watched him from our bed, my coffee growing cold in my hands, the bitter taste matching the hollowness in my chest.

"I've been thinking about our conversation the other night," he said, his reflection meeting my eyes in the mirror. "About the pack's future."

My heart clenched, knowing what was coming. "Oh?"

He turned to face me fully, his expression earnest in that practiced way I was beginning to recognize. "Penelope, love, I need you to understand something. When Ember gives birth, the pack will need to see unity. They'll need to believe this child is ours—completely and without question."

I set my mug down carefully, my hands surprisingly steady. "What exactly are you asking of me, Lucian?"

"I'm asking you to be the Luna our pack needs." He sat on the edge of the bed, reaching for my hand. "The public announcement, the naming ceremony, raising the pup as our heir—all of it needs to be seamless. The pack can never know the truth."

The casualness of his words, the way he spoke of deception as if it were pack policy, made my wolf snarl within me. "And what about us? What about our bond?"

"This strengthens our bond," he said, squeezing my fingers. "You get to be the mother you've always wanted to be, the pack gets its heir, and we maintain our positions. Everyone wins."

Everyone except me, I thought, but I simply nodded. "I see."

"I knew you'd understand." He kissed my forehead, the gesture feeling like a betrayal in itself. "We'll discuss the details tonight. I love you, Penelope."

After he left, I sat in the silence of our bedroom, staring at the family photos on our dresser—images of a love I'd thought was real, a bond I'd believed was sacred.

The summons from Luna Mother Stevens came that afternoon, delivered by a young pack member who couldn't meet my eyes. The formal tone of the message made my stomach churn, but I dressed carefully in my most dignified outfit and made my way to the main pack house.

Luna Mother Stevens received me in her private study, a room that had always intimidated me with its heavy furniture and portraits of past Alphas. She didn't offer me tea or even a seat initially, instead studying me with those sharp eyes that had always seemed to find me lacking.

"Sit," she finally commanded, gesturing to the chair across from her desk.

I settled into the leather chair, keeping my spine straight and my hands folded in my lap.

"I'm sure you're aware of the... situation... with my son and Miss Rose," she began, her voice clipped and businesslike. "What concerns me is your reaction to this arrangement."

"My reaction?" I kept my voice level, though Luna stirred restlessly within me.

"The pack is talking, Penelope. Your behavior at the gathering, your distant manner lately—it's causing unnecessary speculation." Her fingers drummed against the desk. "As Luna, your primary duty is to the pack's stability. Your personal feelings are secondary to that responsibility."

The words hit me like physical blows, but I maintained my composure. "I understand my duties, Luna Mother."

"Do you?" She leaned forward, her gaze piercing. "Because from where I sit, it appears you're more concerned with your wounded pride than with securing our pack's future. My son has found a solution to your... limitations... and instead of gratitude, you're creating drama."

Heat flashed through me at the word 'limitations,' but I forced myself to remain calm. "I'm simply processing the situation."

"Then process faster." Her voice turned cold. "You've had three years to provide an heir and failed. Now that a solution presents itself, you have two choices: embrace your role in raising this child as your own, or step aside for someone who can fulfill a Luna's true purpose."

The threat hung in the air between us, crystal clear. Accept the humiliation, or be cast aside entirely.

"I see," I said quietly.

"Good." She sat back, satisfied. "The pack needs to see unity, Penelope. Whatever personal reservations you have, keep them to yourself. The announcement will be made next week, and I expect your full support."

I left her study with my dignity intact but my heart shattered. The casual cruelty of her words, the assumption that I should be grateful for my mate's betrayal, crystallized something cold and resolute within me.

That evening, I found myself at Dr. Helena's private clinic, the elderly healer's kind eyes immediately filling with concern when she saw my expression.

"Penelope, dear, what's wrong?"

I sank into the chair across from her desk, finally allowing some of my composure to crack. "I need to know everything, Helena. Every detail about Lucian and Ember's arrangement. Every resource he's used, every lie he's told."

Dr. Helena's face crumpled with guilt. "Oh, child..."

"Please," I whispered. "I need to understand the full scope of what I'm dealing with."

She was quiet for a long moment, then opened a locked drawer in her desk. "He's been using pack medical funds for her care. Private rooms, the best treatments, even a special birthing suite being prepared." Her voice grew smaller with each revelation. "He told me it was Alpha business, that discretion was essential for pack security."

The betrayal cut deeper with each detail. While I'd been denied certain treatments due to 'budget constraints,' he'd been lavishing pack resources on his pregnant mistress.

"There's more," Helena continued, her voice barely audible. "He's already had the pup's room prepared in the Alpha wing. Told the staff it was a surprise for you."

I closed my eyes, the full picture finally complete. Not only had he planned this deception, he'd orchestrated every detail to ensure my compliance and humiliation.

"Helena," I said, opening my eyes to meet her troubled gaze. "When I make my choice—whatever that choice may be—will you support me?"

"Always," she said without hesitation. "You deserve so much better than this, Penelope. The Moon Goddess wouldn't want her sacred bonds twisted into something so cruel."

As I walked home through the pack grounds, Luna's voice finally spoke clearly in my mind: *We will not be complicit in our own destruction.*

For the first time in days, I felt a spark of my old strength returning.
