Chapter 13

🐺 CHAPTER THIRTEEN - The Hidden Sanctuary

The forest gradually opened to reveal a hidden valley, shrouded in mist. Silver streams ran through moss-covered rocks, and the ancient trees formed a natural barrier that no outsider could easily penetrate. Kael slowed his pace, sniffing the air, ears twitching.

"This is it," he whispered. "The sanctuary. Only a few know its location-most Darkfangs won't find us here."

Lyra's chest rose and fell rapidly. Her mark glowed faintly, pulsing in harmony with Kael's heartbeat. She felt the pull of the Oath stronger than ever-as if the valley itself acknowledged their bond.

Kael led her through the underbrush until they reached a natural cave, hidden behind a curtain of vines and ferns. Inside, the walls shimmered faintly with moonlight reflected through the entrance. It was small, but safe.

"Rest here," Kael said. "We need to regain strength before moving further."

Lyra sank to the ground, feeling the tension of the night's escape melt slightly. Her hands shook as she traced her mark, still glowing silver in the dim light.

Kael crouched beside her, his presence both comforting and intense. "You did well tonight," he said softly. "Your power... it's growing faster than I anticipated. But controlling it will be harder from now on."

Lyra swallowed. "I saw your wound... I felt the venom in you. I don't want to lose you, Kael."

He studied her for a long moment, eyes reflecting silver and moonlight. "And you won't. Not while I'm here. But the Oath... it's stronger than both of us. It will test you. It will test us."

She nodded, feeling the weight of their connection settle over her. The Oath pulsed, and she realized it wasn't just about power-it was about trust, protection, and a bond deeper than fear or desire.

Outside the cave, a distant howl pierced the morning mist. Lyra flinched. Kael stiffened, his wolf instincts alert.

"They know we're here," he said quietly. "And they will come."

Lyra's heart skipped a beat. "We can fight them, right?"

Kael's gaze softened, almost impossibly so. "Yes. But not today. Today we prepare. Today we learn the limits of the Oath-and each other."

She met his eyes, silver light glowing faintly on her skin. In that moment, she felt everything: fear, desire, power, and a fierce determination she hadn't known she possessed.

Kael reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His touch was gentle, grounding, yet it made her pulse race. "Tomorrow," he said, voice low, "we train again. Harder than ever. And we will be ready... for whatever comes next."

Lyra nodded, leaning back against the cave wall. She watched the pale sunlight creep over the trees, and for the first time since the Council's decree, she allowed herself a small thought:

We might survive this. Together.

The Oath thrummed between them-a living pulse, a tether unbroken.

And deep within the hidden sanctuary, the Moonblood's shadow lingered, waiting for the next test.

I came with a mission to kill the Lord of the empire, Mark. "Lara, I am pleased with you." Fireworks bloomed above us as I looked down at Mark kneeling on one knee. The dagger hidden in my sleeve almost slipped from my grasp. "Are you willing to marry me as my wife, from now on, for a lifetime?" "Yes." The system's alarm rang sharply in my mind, urging me to complete my mission, but I still chose to move forward without hesitation. Reality, however, was far crueler than I expected. "Lara, as Mark's wife, you must not leave the palace for three years and, when the time comes, gracefully step down." "Okay," I answered lightly, just as I had agreed to his proposal. That night, flames swallowed my courtyard, the fire blazing high enough to erase everything I had endured. I thought it was my end. But when I opened my eyes, I was back to the day he proposed. The same fireworks. The same man on one knee. Only this time, Mark's eyes were filled with tears as he held my hand and whispered, "Lara, don't go."
