Breaking Free from Betrayal Chapter 1

The scent of herbs and antiseptic filled my nostrils as I organized the new lab reagents for our pack Healer. It was mindless work, but I welcomed the distraction. My wolf, Emma, had been restless all morning, pacing anxiously in my mind. As a late bloomer who'd only discovered her three months ago, we were still learning to communicate properly.

"Something's wrong," she whispered in my thoughts. "I can feel it."

I pushed her concern aside, focusing on alphabetizing the tincture bottles. Cameron had been distant lately—more so than usual—but I'd grown accustomed to the cold silences, the dismissive glances. Four years of loving someone who increasingly seemed to despise me had taught me to lower my expectations.

"Madison, could you grab the inventory list from Beta Cameron's office?" the Healer called from the storage room. "I need to check if the wolfsbane shipment arrived."

I nodded, setting down the glass vials carefully before making my way to Cameron's office. The door was unlocked—unusual for him. He guarded his privacy fiercely, especially from me. I hesitated at the threshold, feeling like an intruder despite being his mate.

The inventory list lay on his immaculate desk, but as I reached for it, my elbow knocked against the drawer, sliding it open an inch. A flash of silver caught my eye—the official Silver Moon Pack crest embossed on heavy cream envelopes.

My fingers trembled as I pulled one out. The seal was unbroken, the paper expensive and thick beneath my fingertips. Something about it made my stomach twist with dread.

"Open it," Emma urged, her anxiety bleeding into mine.

I broke the seal, unfolding the heavy cardstock inside. The elegant calligraphy swam before my eyes as I read:

*The Silver Moon Pack cordially invites you to witness the sacred Marking Ceremony of Beta Cameron Torres and his chosen Luna, Jenna Vance...*

The date was set for next month. My breathing became shallow as I read the details of the elaborate ceremony—the traditional silver chalice, the sacred oils, the ceremonial cloak that I had hand-embroidered last winter, believing it would someday be part of our ceremony.

My legs gave out, and I sank into his chair, the invitation clutched in my white-knuckled grip. Jenna. His assistant. The she-wolf who looked at me with barely concealed contempt whenever our paths crossed. The one who always seemed to be at his side lately, touching his arm, laughing at his jokes.

"He's betraying us," Emma howled, her pain tearing through me like claws. "Our mate is choosing another!"

I closed my eyes, reaching through our mate bond—that sacred connection that had once felt like coming home but now stretched thin and fragile between us.

*Cameron?* I called through our mind-link, my mental voice shaking.

I felt his immediate irritation at the intrusion. *What is it, Madison? I'm in a meeting.*

*I found the invitations,* I sent back, unable to mask my devastation. *For your marking ceremony with Jenna.*

The mind-link went silent for several heartbeats. Then I felt him moving, his anger building with each step. I remained frozen in his chair, the evidence of his betrayal still clutched in my hands when the office door slammed open.

Cameron stood in the doorway, his six-foot-two frame radiating fury. His handsome face—the face I'd loved since college—was twisted with rage.

"You went through my desk?" he snarled.

"The drawer was open," I whispered. "Cameron, how could you? We're mates. The Moon Goddess chose us—"

"The Moon Goddess made a mistake," he cut me off, stepping closer. His Beta aura crashed over me like a physical weight, making it hard to breathe. "Look at you. A late bloomer who can barely control her pathetic wolf. You think you're worthy of being my Luna?"

I tried to stand, to defend myself, but his Beta tone sliced through my resolve.

"This is none of your concern," he commanded, his voice laced with power that made Emma cower and my knees buckle. "You will say nothing about this. Nothing!"

Tears streamed down my face as I struggled against the compulsion of his Beta command. "Please," I begged. "We can talk about this. I've supported you for four years. I gave up my research position to move here with you. I love you."

Something cold and cruel flickered in his eyes. "That was your choice. I never asked you to sacrifice anything."

The words cut deeper than any physical wound. Emma whimpered, retreating to the darkest corner of my mind.

Hours later, after a day of avoiding his gaze across the pack house, Cameron found me in our bedroom. His expression was unreadable as he gripped my arm.

"Come with me," he ordered, dragging me down the stairs.

"Where are we going?" I asked, fear rising as he pulled me toward the basement door.

"You need to learn your place," he said flatly, pushing me toward the narrow staircase that led to the damp, windowless room below.

Panic exploded in my chest. "No, Cameron, please! You know I can't—my claustrophobia—"

He knew about the childhood accident that had left me trapped in a collapsed den for hours. He knew how spaces without windows sent me into panic attacks.

"Maybe some time alone will help you reconsider your attitude," he said, shoving me through the doorway.

I stumbled down the stairs, turning back just in time to see his cold eyes before the heavy iron door slammed shut. The lock clicked with terrible finality.

"Cameron!" I screamed, throwing myself against the door. "Please don't do this!"

There was no answer. Just footsteps walking away.

The darkness closed in around me. The walls seemed to shrink, pressing closer with each panicked breath. Emma howled in terror, her fear amplifying mine until I couldn't tell where her panic ended and mine began.

I clawed at the door until my nails broke and blood smeared the wood. My lungs couldn't get enough air. Black spots danced in my vision as I slid down the wall.

The last thing I remembered was Emma's broken whimper: *He's gone to her. To Jenna.*

Then darkness swallowed me whole.
