Chapter 2

The morning light sliced through my curtains like an accusation. I'd managed maybe two hours of sleep, my mind replaying the slap on an endless loop—the sound, Victoria's face, the flash of phones. My hand still tingled.

I reached for my phone on instinct, then froze. Forty-seven missed calls. Three hundred and twelve text messages. My email notification had stopped counting at 999+.

With trembling fingers, I unlocked the screen.

The video was everywhere. #GalaSlap sat at number one trending worldwide. Ten million views and climbing. Someone had captured it from three different angles, each worse than the last. There was my face, twisted with rage I didn't know I possessed. There was Victoria, shocked and vulnerable, red lipstick smeared across her cheek like blood.

The comments were a firing squad.

"Jealous assistant finally snaps."

"This is why you don't let bitter women near success."

"She's clearly unstable. Victoria dodged a bullet."

I scrolled, unable to stop, each word a fresh wound. The think pieces had already started: "The Danger of Female Workplace Resentment," "When Ambition Turns Toxic," "The Assistant Who Couldn't Handle Her Boss's Success."

My phone buzzed. A text from Jennifer, my former colleague at the foundation: "Amelia, I'm so sorry, but I can't be associated with this right now. Please don't contact me."

Then another from Michael, a board member I'd worked with for three years: "I always sensed something off about you. Victoria was too trusting."

One by one, my professional relationships evaporated like morning fog. People I'd helped, connections I'd cultivated, all of them distancing themselves at lightspeed.

I forced myself to turn on the television. The morning show hosts wore matching expressions of concern and fascination.

"—shocking moment at last night's charity gala," the anchor was saying. "PR strategist Amelia Clarke physically assaulted her employer, philanthropist Victoria Hale, after being dismissed for ethical violations."

The screen cut to footage of Victoria on a different morning show, her eyes red-rimmed, a tasteful silk scarf draped over her shoulders. She looked fragile. Wounded.

"It's been so difficult," Victoria was saying, her voice breaking in exactly the right places. "Amelia was like a sister to me. I trusted her with everything—our donors' information, our foundation's mission. To discover she'd been accessing confidential files, planning to leak sensitive data..." A delicate pause. "And then to be attacked in front of everyone I respect. I just... I never saw this side of her."

The host reached across to squeeze Victoria's hand. "You're so brave to speak out."

"I have to," Victoria said, looking directly into the camera with those practiced, earnest eyes. "For all the women who've been betrayed by people they loved. For everyone who believed in our mission."

I turned off the television. My apartment felt suffocatingly small, the walls pressing in.

The doorbell rang.

I opened it to find a man in an expensive suit holding a thick manila envelope. "Amelia Clarke?"

"Yes."

"You've been served." He thrust the envelope into my hands and walked away.

My fingers felt numb as I pulled out the legal documents. The letterhead belonged to Morrison & Associates, one of the city's most aggressive law firms.

Victoria Hale vs. Amelia Clarke. Civil complaint for defamation, breach of contract, theft of proprietary information, and assault. Damages sought: two million dollars.

Two million dollars I didn't have.

I sank onto my couch, reading through page after page of accusations. Screenshots of login records showing my credentials accessing the donor database at 11:47 PM on multiple occasions. Emails I'd sent discussing foundation strategy, now framed as evidence of "unauthorized information gathering." A signed statement from Richard Hale claiming I'd acted "erratically and possessively" toward Victoria for months.

Every piece of evidence was real but twisted, stripped of context, weaponized. That late-night database access? I'd been updating donor thank-you letters Victoria had forgotten about. Those strategy emails? Sent to Victoria herself, part of my job. Richard's statement? A complete fabrication.

But it didn't matter. Victoria had been planning this for months, maybe longer. Creating a paper trail, manufacturing a narrative. And I'd been too blind, too loyal, too stupidly trusting to see it coming.

My phone rang. An unknown number. I almost didn't answer, but something made me pick up.

"Amelia Clarke? This is Dana Pierce from Legal Shield. We're a firm specializing in employment disputes. Given your... situation, we'd like to discuss representation."

Hope flared for half a second before she named her retainer fee. Fifty thousand dollars upfront. I had maybe twelve thousand in savings.

"I'll... I'll have to get back to you," I managed.

After she hung up, I sat in the silence of my ruined life, the legal papers spread across my coffee table like evidence of my own stupidity.

Then my eyes fell on my leather portfolio, sitting on the shelf where I'd thrown it last night. Years of meticulous notes, every meeting documented, every financial report I'd reviewed, every conversation I'd recorded in my precise handwriting.

I pulled it down with shaking hands and opened it to the most recent entries. Victoria's foundation financial reports for the last quarter. I'd reviewed them two weeks ago, cross-referencing them against the public statements I'd helped draft.

Something caught my eye. A discrepancy I'd noticed but dismissed. The public statement claimed $2.3 million in donations. The internal report showed $2.8 million received. Where had the extra five hundred thousand gone?

I flipped back further. More reports, more discrepancies. Vague expense categories: "Program Development," "Operational Costs," "Strategic Initiatives." Numbers that didn't quite add up. Board meetings where financial discussions were rushed through, questions deflected.

And suddenly, I remembered. Victoria's new Cartier bracelet last month. "An early anniversary gift from Richard," she'd said. Her casual mention of the villa in Tuscany they'd rented for six weeks. The designer renovation of her brownstone that cost more than most people's houses.

I'd never questioned it. Old money, I'd assumed. Richard's family wealth.

But what if it wasn't?

My hands were steady now as I pulled out three years of financial documents, laying them across my floor in chronological order. The pattern was there, had always been there, hiding in plain sight.

Victoria hadn't just betrayed me. She'd been stealing from her own foundation. From donors who believed in female empowerment. From women who trusted her.

And she'd framed me to keep me silent.

I sat back, my mind racing with possibilities and dangers. I had evidence, but I had no platform, no credibility, no resources. Victoria had everything.

But she'd made one mistake.

She'd underestimated how well I knew her. How meticulously I documented everything. How patient I could be when it mattered.

I picked up my phone and opened my contacts, scrolling to a name I hadn't called in months: Marcus Webb, investigative journalist. He'd interviewed Victoria last year for a profile piece. He'd also asked questions about foundation finances that made Victoria uncomfortable—questions I'd helped deflect.

My finger hovered over his name.

This wasn't just about revenge. This was about the truth. About all those donors, all those women who believed they were supporting something real.

I pressed call.

The phone rang once. Twice.

"Marcus Webb."

I took a breath. "Mr. Webb, my name is Amelia Clarke. I think you and I need to talk about Victoria Hale's foundation. And I think you're going to want to record this conversation."
