Chapter 2

LYRA'S POV:

I stood up, my eyes dry, my heart heavy, and my mind made up. I'm leaving, I thought to myself. I'm leaving this toxic pack and the mate who betrayed me. I rubbed my belly, feeling a surge of determination. I won't let Kalen's actions define me or my pup's future.

I stormed back into the apartment, my eyes blazing with a mix of anger and sadness. Kalen was still sitting on the couch, his shirt off, looking smug and self-assured.

"You're leaving, aren't you?" he said, his voice dripping with disdain. "You're finally realizing you're not good enough for me."

I laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, Kalen, you're delusional. I'm leaving, all right. But it's not because I'm not good enough for you. It's because I'm too good for you. I'm taking my pup, and I'm getting out of this toxic pack."

Kalen's expression darkened, his eyes flashing with anger. "You can't leave, Lyra. You're my mate."

I shook my head, a sense of pity washing over me. "I'm not your mate, Kalen. I'm your property, your breeding machine. But I'm done being treated like that. I'm done being treated like I'm nothing."

I paused, my voice dropping to a whisper. "You may have taken my heart, Kalen, but you'll never have my soul."

Kalen's face twisted in rage, but I didn't flinch. I stood tall, my chin held high, as I turned and walked away. The door creaked behind me, and I felt a sense of freedom wash over me.

I walked out into the night, the stars twinkling above me like diamonds. The cool night air hit me like a slap in the face, and I felt alive. I felt free. I rubbed my belly, feeling my pup move inside me. We were going to make it, together.

As I disappeared into the darkness, I heard Kalen's voice behind me, shouting my name. But I didn't look back. I kept walking, my heart heavy, but my spirit unbroken.

He followed me across the continent, dragging my mother along to guilt-trip me into coming back. When that didn't work, he handed me a "farewell gift." As I opened the box, a sickly sweet smell hit me-he was trying to drug me to kidnap me back to New York. My legs gave out, but I didn't hit the floor. On the day I finally pried open the locked drawer in Marcus’s study, I didn't find a surprise anniversary gift. I found a shrine to my father's business partner, Izzy. Photos of a woman who looked exactly like me stared back. That was when I realized my marriage was nothing more than an expensive lie. I wasn't his wife; I was a customized substitute for the woman he couldn't have. The nightmare worsened when scalding soup was spilled at a restaurant. Marcus didn't hesitate. He threw his body over Izzy to shield her, leaving me to take the full force of the burns. Later, while I lay in the hospital bandaged and in agony, he didn't come to comfort me. He came to demand I donate a kidney to save Izzy. "If we both needed a kidney, who would you choose?" I asked him, desperate for a lie. "Izzy," he said instantly. "She has so much more to do." He didn't know I was pregnant. He didn't know that while he was begging me to save his mistress, the stress was killing his unborn child. I wiped my tears and laughed. "Okay," I said. I signed the divorce papers and left them on his desk. On top of them, I placed a medical report dated that morning: *Spontaneous Abortion.* Then, I boarded a one-way flight to Montana and vanished, leaving him to wake up to a world where he had saved his mistress but killed his family.

For nine years, I was Kane Hill' s secret. I was his emotional punching bag, the convenient stand-in for my twin sister, Harper-the woman he truly loved. I endured his cruelty, convincing myself his control was a twisted form of love. Then, just before he announced their engagement, Harper sent me a recording. It was Kane, his voice smooth and dismissive. "Eden? She's useful," he told Harper. "An emotional pressure valve. I need to vent on someone so I can be the perfect man for you." The cold truth shattered me. I wasn't a person, not even a substitute. I was a tool. That night, he polished Harper's engagement ring right in front of me before ending our nine-year "game" with a single, bored phone call. He never knew that I was the girl who had saved him at a summer camp all those years ago, not Harper. He'd called my attempts to tell him the truth "pathetic." So I packed a single bag and vanished into the night, leaving his gilded cage for a quiet farm in Vermont. But just as I started to heal, he found me, clutching the proof of my story in his hand, begging for a second chance I had no intention of giving.
