Chapter 6

Ella's POV

The morning air in Valerith Palace was unusually crisp, carrying a faint metallic tang she could not place. She wandered through the corridors, fingers trailing along cold stone, thinking of the night before.

Louis. His closeness, his warmth, the way he had surrendered to desire... it haunted her. She had never imagined passion could feel so consuming, so intertwined with magic. Even now, she felt the echo of the Convergence humming along her veins, reminding her that their bond was far more than emotion - it was power, alive and sentient.

A shadow shifted in the far corridor. Ella stiffened. Not fear - curiosity, sharpened by the whispers she'd begun hearing. The palace was no longer silent. Something below the marble floors pulsed, ancient and patient. And she could feel it: the Dread Court had moved.

Louis' POV

He had returned to the upper chambers, yet he could not escape it - the pulse of her, the pulse of the Convergence, the pulse of the palace itself. Desire had no bounds, yet duty pulled at him. The Dread Court's whispers were growing louder, faint tremors beneath the floors, in the walls, in the shadows that had lingered too long.

He could not allow her to be caught in the crossfire.

Yet... even as he told himself to step back, to guard her, to distance himself, he failed. Every glance, every thought, every heartbeat pulled him closer. The centuries of restraint that had defined him evaporated in the presence of her magic, her innocence, and her defiance.

He found himself watching her from the shadows, dark eyes softening, lips curving with a mixture of amusement and longing. "Damn you, Ella," he murmured under his breath. "I cannot protect you from myself."

Ella's POV

Her steps led her to the ancient wing, where long-abandoned chambers held the echoes of the past. Frost clung stubbornly to the walls, and whispers of flame seemed to lick at her fingertips as she reached out instinctively.

The Convergence pulsed stronger here. Her power responded to her emotions - fear, anticipation, desire. And beneath it all, she felt a stirring she did not understand: something ancient, older than the palace itself, awakening.

A chill made her shiver, and she turned to find Louis standing at the doorway. His dark cloak flowed like shadows around him, yet his eyes, soft and infinite, were fixed on her.

"You're wandering too far," he said, voice low and commanding, yet laced with concern. "The Convergence is stirring... and so are others."

"Others?" she whispered, frowning. "What do you mean?"

"The Dread Court," he said, stepping closer, yet stopping short, as if he feared being too near. "They sense the bond. They sense us. They are already moving."

Louis' POV

He forced himself to maintain distance, though every fiber of him ached to bridge the space between them. Protecting her meant restraint - yet he found restraint impossible.

The Old Winter beneath the palace pulsed in response to her power, faint tremors resonating through the floors and walls. He felt it coiling beneath them, ancient and patient, waiting for something they could not yet comprehend.

"The bond between us," he murmured, voice roughened by centuries of darkness and longing, "cannot be hidden. And they will strike because of it."

He studied her, taking in the subtle glow of her magic, the soft flush of emotion on her cheeks, the vulnerability she did not realize she displayed. And despite the danger, despite the Dread Court's awareness, he could not step back.

"I should leave you," he whispered, dark, low, almost pleading with himself. "For your safety. Yet I cannot."

Ella's POV

She stepped closer despite his distance, drawn by the pull that had haunted her since their first encounter. "Louis..." she breathed, "I don't care about danger. Not when it's with you."

He exhaled sharply, the shadows around him deepening with intensity, and for a heartbeat, centuries of restraint cracked completely. Desire, protection, and emotion collided in his chest, making his pulse thunder in ways he hadn't felt in centuries.

"Then we face it together," he murmured, dark lips brushing the corner of her temple, "no matter what stirs below, no matter what shadows awaken."

And beneath the palace, something ancient, patient, and powerful responded - a deep, resonant vibration that shifted stone and air alike. Flame and frost coiled together faintly through the walls, whispering that the Convergence had reached a tipping point, and that the bond between king and princess was more than mere attraction. It was destiny.
