Chapter 18

The following morning, the city woke to chaos.

Financial markets across the world were already reacting to the escalating conflict between Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation. News channels ran continuous coverage, commentators speaking in urgent tones as stock prices fluctuated violently.

But none of them knew the truth.

The chaos had been engineered.

Sophia Carter sat in the Carter Group executive conference room watching the market screens with calm precision. Around her, executives whispered anxiously while analysts refreshed their terminals every few seconds.

Daniel stood beside her, studying the numbers.

"They're biting," he said quietly.

Sophia didn't respond immediately.

The first stage of the plan she and Alexander had designed the night before had begun only hours earlier.

Both companies had simultaneously released misleading market signals-large asset transfers, unexpected project cancellations, sudden debt restructuring.

To outside investors, it looked like both empires were collapsing.

To Helios Capital, it looked like opportunity.

Sophia leaned forward slightly.

"Where are they entering?"

Daniel tapped his tablet.

"Multiple purchases through offshore accounts. Exactly like Alexander predicted."

Sophia allowed herself a small breath of satisfaction.

"Good."

Daniel glanced at her.

"You seem strangely calm for someone whose company appears to be losing billions."

Sophia smiled faintly.

"That's because it isn't."

Across the room, a senior financial advisor approached nervously.

"Ms. Carter... media outlets are requesting statements about the apparent instability in Carter Group."

Sophia shook her head.

The advisor hesitated.

"But investors are panicking."

Sophia's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"Let them panic."

Daniel chuckled quietly.

"You and Alexander really are similar."

Sophia didn't argue.

Because he was right.

Across the city, Alexander Kingsley stood in his office watching the same financial storm unfold.

Victoria Laurent leaned casually against the conference table behind him.

"You're losing twenty billion dollars on paper today," she said.

Alexander didn't turn around.

"I'm gaining something far more valuable."

Victoria raised an eyebrow.

"And what's that?"

Alexander's reflection stared back at him from the glass window.

"Information."

Victoria walked closer.

"Helios Capital?"

Alexander nodded slightly.

"They can't resist a wounded empire."

Victoria smiled slowly.

"So you and Sophia Carter are really working together."

Alexander glanced at her.

"Temporarily."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"I never thought I'd see the day."

Alexander looked back at the skyline.

"Neither did I."

Victoria studied him carefully.

"There's something I don't understand."

Alexander waited.

"You're risking your entire company on this plan."

"Yes."

"And you trust Sophia not to betray you."

Alexander paused before answering.

"She won't."

Victoria frowned.

"You sound very certain."

Alexander's voice softened slightly.

"She always hated losing more than she hated me."

Victoria laughed quietly.

"That might be the most romantic thing you've ever said."

Alexander didn't respond.

Later that afternoon, Sophia received an unexpected call.

It was Alexander.

She answered immediately.

"Report," she said.

Alexander's voice came through the phone calmly.

"They've doubled their acquisition rate."

Sophia stood and walked toward the window of her office.

"Good."

Alexander continued.

"They're becoming aggressive."

Sophia watched the traffic moving far below.

"That means they're confident."

"Yes."

Alexander paused.

"They think we're weak."

Sophia's lips curved slightly.

"Perfect."

Another silence passed between them.

Then Alexander said something unexpected.

"You're enjoying this."

Sophia leaned against the window frame.

"You're not?"

Alexander chuckled softly.

"I haven't had this much fun in years."

Sophia rolled her eyes.

"You're impossible."

Alexander's voice dropped slightly.

"You used to like that about me."

Sophia didn't answer immediately.

Memories tried to push their way into her thoughts again.

Late nights.

Shared victories.

Moments when the rivalry between them had felt more like partnership.

She pushed the memories aside.

"That was a long time ago."

Alexander's tone shifted.

"Was it?"

Sophia changed the subject quickly.

"Focus, Alexander."

He sighed quietly.

"Fine."

Another update appeared on Sophia's computer screen.

Helios Capital had just purchased another massive block of Carter Group shares.

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

"They're accelerating faster than expected."

Alexander responded immediately.

"Good."

Sophia frowned.

"Why good?"

Alexander's voice grew serious.

"Because it means they're getting desperate."

Sophia leaned forward.

"What did you do?"

Alexander didn't answer right away.

Then he said quietly,

"I leaked something."

Sophia's eyes widened slightly.

"You what?"

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"I made them believe Carter Group has access to a hidden energy contract worth eighty billion dollars."

Sophia stared at the screen.

"That contract doesn't exist."

Alexander smiled faintly on the other end of the phone.

"Exactly."

Sophia couldn't stop the laugh that escaped her.

"That's insane."

Alexander chuckled.

"You married me."

Sophia rolled her eyes again.

"That was clearly a mistake."

Alexander replied softly,

"I'm starting to think the same thing."

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them felt strangely comfortable.

Then Daniel burst into Sophia's office.

"You need to see this."

Sophia covered the phone slightly.

"What is it?"

Daniel turned the tablet toward her.

A new market report flashed across the screen.

Helios Capital had just revealed a massive leveraged investment.

Sophia's eyes widened.

"They've exposed themselves."

Alexander spoke immediately through the phone.

"I see it too."

Daniel looked between them.

"You're on the phone with him?"

Sophia nodded.

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"This is exactly what we wanted."

Sophia felt excitement building in her chest.

For the first time since the war began, they had the advantage.

But Daniel still looked uneasy.

"There's something else," he said.

Sophia looked up.

"What?"

Daniel hesitated.

"One of our internal accounts approved a Helios Capital transaction this morning."

Sophia frowned.

"That's impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"It happened."

Alexander's voice sharpened through the phone.

"You have a leak."

Sophia's stomach tightened.

"Inside Carter Group?"

Daniel nodded grimly.

"Yes."

Alexander spoke quietly.

"That means Helios Capital knows more than we thought."

Sophia felt the tension in the room grow instantly.

A traitor inside her company could destroy everything.

Daniel looked at her seriously.

"We need to find them."

Sophia nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alexander added,

"And fast."

Sophia ended the call and leaned back in her chair.

For the first time in days, the situation felt uncertain again.

Not because of Helios Capital.

But because someone inside Carter Group was helping them.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"You look worried."

Sophia exhaled slowly.

"I'm thinking."

"About what?"

Sophia's eyes drifted toward the window again.

"About how dangerous this game just became."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Sophia's voice dropped slightly.

"If Helios Capital has someone inside Carter Group..."

She paused.

"Then they might also have someone inside Kingsley Corporation."

Daniel's eyes widened slightly.

"You think Alexander could be compromised too?"

Sophia shook her head.

"No."

Daniel looked confused.

"Then what?"

Sophia's voice grew quieter.

"I think someone close to both of us is playing a much bigger game."

Daniel stared at her.

"That's not good."

Sophia nodded.

"No."

Outside the office windows, the city skyline glowed under the evening lights.

The corporate war between Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation had already shaken the financial world.

But the real battle was only just beginning.

Because now Sophia Carter knew something terrifying.

The enemy wasn't just outside her company.

It was already inside.

And whoever it was...

Had been watching every move she and Alexander made.
