Chapter 20

The night after the confrontation in the parking garage left Sophia Carter restless.

Sleep refused to come easily.

She lay in bed staring at the ceiling of her penthouse apartment while the events of the past few days replayed endlessly in her mind. The corporate war, Helios Capital, the traitor inside Carter Group... and Alexander.

Especially Alexander.

She turned onto her side and sighed quietly.

Seeing him in that parking garage had stirred memories she thought she had buried long ago.

Once, Alexander Kingsley had been the one person she trusted more than anyone.

Once, she had believed their partnership-both in business and in life-was unbreakable.

Then everything had fallen apart.

Sophia forced the thoughts away and sat up. The digital clock beside her bed glowed 3:17 AM.

Too late to sleep.

Too early to work.

Her phone buzzed suddenly on the bedside table.

Sophia frowned and picked it up.

A message.

From Alexander.

"We have a problem."

Sophia sat up straighter.

She typed quickly.

"Define problem."

The response came immediately.

"Helios Capital just made their move."

Sophia was already getting out of bed.

"Where?"

A moment later Alexander sent a file.

Sophia opened it and felt her stomach tighten.

Helios Capital had just launched a massive short-selling attack against Carter Group's stock.

Billions of dollars were being poured into market positions designed to force the company's value downward.

Sophia typed again.

"They're trying to crash Carter Group."

Alexander responded.

"Yes. And they're using insider timing."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

The traitor again.

She grabbed a jacket and headed toward the door.

"Where are you?"

Alexander replied.

"Kingsley Tower."

Sophia didn't hesitate.

"I'm coming."

Less than thirty minutes later, Sophia stepped into Alexander's office.

He was already there, standing by the massive digital screens that covered one wall of the room. Market data streamed across them in real time.

Alexander glanced up as she entered.

"You move fast."

Sophia walked straight to the screens.

"Show me."

Alexander tapped a command.

New charts appeared.

Carter Group's stock value was dropping rapidly.

Sophia studied the data carefully.

"They're using multiple trading fronts," she said.

Alexander nodded.

"More than twenty shell corporations."

Sophia crossed her arms.

"That kind of coordination requires internal timing."

Alexander looked at her.

"You're thinking the same thing I am."

Sophia's voice was quiet.

"The traitor inside Carter Group is feeding them information."

Alexander walked closer to her.

"Which means they know exactly when we plan our moves."

Sophia felt frustration rising.

"Then we're always one step behind."

Alexander shook his head slowly.

"Not if we change the game."

Sophia looked at him.

"What are you thinking?"

Alexander smiled slightly.

"We find the traitor."

Sophia gave him a skeptical look.

"That's easier said than done."

Alexander stepped closer to the screens again.

"Not necessarily."

He pulled up another document.

"This is the internal approval log for the transaction Daniel discovered yesterday."

Sophia leaned closer.

"You got this from Carter Group?"

Alexander shrugged.

"You gave me temporary alliance privileges."

Sophia narrowed her eyes.

"That doesn't mean you get unlimited access."

Alexander smirked.

"It does if I'm trying to save your company."

Sophia sighed.

"You're impossible."

Alexander pointed at the screen.

"Focus."

Sophia examined the log entries carefully.

The approval codes appeared legitimate.

Too legitimate.

Then something caught her attention.

"Wait."

Alexander looked at her.

"What?"

Sophia pointed at a timestamp.

"This authorization happened at 6:43 PM yesterday."

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

Sophia frowned.

"That's impossible."

Alexander tilted his head.

"Why?"

Sophia turned to face him.

"Because at 6:43 PM yesterday..."

She paused.

"...I was in a board meeting with all five senior executives who have that level of authorization."

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"So none of them could have approved it."

Sophia nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

Alexander thought for a moment.

Then realization flashed across his face.

"It wasn't approved by one of them."

Sophia's heart skipped.

"You think someone stole their authorization credentials."

Alexander nodded.

"Someone with high-level system access."

Sophia whispered the answer before she could stop herself.

"IT security."

Alexander met her gaze.

"Yes."

Sophia felt the pieces begin to fall into place.

Only a handful of people inside Carter Group had unrestricted access to the internal authorization system.

And one name suddenly stood out.

Daniel.

Sophia immediately pushed the thought away.

No.

Impossible.

Daniel had supported her through everything.

He had helped rebuild Carter Group.

He had been the only person she trusted completely.

Alexander noticed her expression change.

"What is it?"

Sophia shook her head quickly.

"Nothing."

Alexander studied her carefully.

"You thought of someone."

Sophia avoided his eyes.

"It's not possible."

Alexander stepped closer.

"Who?"

Sophia hesitated.

Then she said quietly,

"Daniel."

Alexander's expression remained neutral.

"That's your cousin."

"Yes."

"And your closest ally."

Sophia nodded slowly.

Alexander folded his arms.

"That doesn't mean he's innocent."

Sophia's voice hardened.

"He would never betray me."

Alexander looked at her calmly.

"Are you sure?"

Sophia didn't answer.

Because deep down, doubt had already begun to grow.

An hour later, Sophia and Alexander sat across from each other at the conference table.

Dozens of reports covered the surface between them.

Sophia rubbed her temples.

"This doesn't make sense."

Alexander leaned back in his chair.

"Betrayal rarely does."

Sophia looked at him sharply.

"You don't understand."

Alexander's voice softened slightly.

"Then help me."

Sophia hesitated.

Then she spoke quietly.

"After my divorce... Daniel was the only person who stayed on my side."

Alexander listened silently.

"He helped me rebuild Carter Group from nothing."

Alexander nodded slowly.

"And that's why you trust him."

Sophia's voice grew quieter.

"He's family."

Alexander studied her carefully.

"Sometimes family hurts us the most."

Sophia looked away.

She didn't want to consider the possibility.

But the evidence was beginning to point in one direction.

And that direction terrified her.

Alexander spoke again after a moment.

"We don't have to confront him yet."

Sophia looked up.

"What do you suggest?"

Alexander leaned forward.

"We test him."

Sophia frowned.

"How?"

Alexander smiled slightly.

"We give him false information."

Sophia understood immediately.

"If Helios Capital reacts..."

"...then we know he's the leak," Alexander finished.

Sophia nodded slowly.

It was a simple plan.

But it would reveal the truth.

And the truth might destroy the last piece of trust she still had left.

Hours later, exhaustion began to settle in.

The clock on the wall showed 2:11 AM.

Sophia leaned back in her chair.

"We should continue this tomorrow."

Alexander shook his head.

"Markets open in five hours."

Sophia sighed.

"Then we're not sleeping tonight."

Alexander stood and walked toward the small lounge area in his office.

"There's a guest room."

Sophia raised an eyebrow.

"You expect me to sleep in your office?"

Alexander smiled slightly.

"You've done it before."

Sophia rolled her eyes.

"That was when we were married."

Alexander paused for a moment.

Then he said quietly,

"Yes."

A strange silence filled the room.

Sophia stood slowly.

"Fine."

Alexander nodded toward the hallway.

"I'll take the couch."

Sophia looked surprised.

"You don't have to."

Alexander shrugged.

"I insist."

Sophia walked toward the guest room door.

But before she entered, she stopped and turned back.

Alexander was standing near the window again, looking out at the city lights.

For a moment he looked less like the powerful billionaire CEO and more like the man she once knew.

Sophia spoke softly.

"Alexander."

He turned.

"Yes?"

Sophia hesitated.

Then she said,

"Thank you... for helping tonight."

Alexander's expression softened slightly.

"You'd do the same."

Sophia didn't answer.

Because the truth was...

She wasn't entirely sure she would have.

She stepped into the guest room and closed the door.

Alexander remained alone in the office.

He stared out at the dark skyline.

The war with Helios Capital was reaching a dangerous point.

The traitor inside Carter Group was about to be exposed.

And the fragile alliance between him and Sophia Carter was becoming harder to separate from the feelings they once shared.

For the first time in years, Alexander Kingsley realized something unsettling.

The biggest risk in this war wasn't losing his company.

It was losing Sophia Carter again.
