Chapter 2

The mahogany doors of the Blackwood Group boardroom had never seen me before.

In three years of marriage, I had been the perfect invisible wife—attending galas, hosting dinner parties, smiling mutely beside Damien at charity functions. But I had never set foot in his corporate kingdom. Today, that changed.

I pushed through the heavy doors at exactly 2:47 PM, thirteen minutes into what I knew would be Damien's most crucial presentation of the quarter. The conversation died instantly as twenty-three pairs of eyes turned toward me, their expressions ranging from confusion to outright shock.

Damien stood frozen at the head of the conference table, a laser pointer still aimed at the massive projection screen behind him. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly—the only sign that my presence had rattled him.

"Gentlemen," I said, my voice carrying the authority I'd learned at MIT lecture halls, "I apologize for the interruption. Please, continue."

I moved to the empty chair at the far end of the table, directly opposite Damien. The silence stretched like a taut wire as I settled my leather portfolio on the polished surface and folded my hands.

"As I was saying," Damien recovered, his tone carefully controlled, "the Manhattan Skyline project represents a five-billion-dollar investment in the future of—"

"Seventeen," I said quietly.

The word cut through his presentation like a blade. Damien's dark eyes snapped to mine, and for the first time in three years, he was truly looking at me. Not through me, not past me, but at me.

"I'm sorry?"

"Seventeen critical design flaws," I repeated, opening my portfolio with deliberate precision. "In your current architectural plans."

The boardroom erupted in murmurs. Board member Harrison leaned forward, his silver eyebrows drawn together. "Mrs. Blackwood, with all due respect, this is a complex urban development project—"

"Which will collapse within eighteen months of completion if you proceed with these specifications." I pulled out the first blueprint, spreading it across the table. "The foundation calculations assume soil density consistent with the 1970s geological surveys. But the recent subway expansion three blocks north has created underground water displacement that's reduced load-bearing capacity by thirty-seven percent."

Damien's knuckles whitened around the laser pointer. "Aria, this isn't—"

"The wind load calculations are equally flawed," I continued, pulling out a second sheet covered in my precise annotations. "Your architects used outdated meteorological data. The new climate patterns show wind speeds in this corridor have increased by an average of forty-three percent over the past decade. These towers will sway beyond acceptable parameters during moderate storms."

Senior partner Margaret Chen was staring at me as if I'd grown a second head. "How could you possibly know—"

"Because I'm not just Mrs. Blackwood," I said, meeting each board member's gaze in turn. "I'm Dr. Aria Winterbourne, MIT's youngest tenured professor of structural engineering and sustainable architecture. I've designed earthquake-resistant hospitals in Japan, hurricane-proof housing in the Caribbean, and the award-winning climate research facility in Antarctica."

The silence that followed was deafening.

Damien's face had gone pale beneath his tan. "You never told me—"

"You never asked." I stood, gathering my papers with the same calm precision I'd used to tear up my medical report the night before. "The thermal expansion joints are insufficient for buildings of this height in our climate zone. The electrical grid can't support the projected energy load. The emergency stairwells violate three separate fire safety codes. The parking structure will flood during the first heavy rain."

I placed a thick folder on the table. "I've taken the liberty of documenting all seventeen issues, along with projected failure timelines and estimated casualty reports. Gentlemen, if you build this project as designed, you won't just lose five billion dollars. You'll be responsible for hundreds of deaths."

Board member Thompson was frantically flipping through my documentation, his face growing paler with each page. "Jesus Christ... she's right. How did our architects miss this?"

"Because they're not me," I said simply.

Damien finally found his voice, though it came out rougher than usual. "Why are you doing this?"

I met his stare across the length of the boardroom table, remembering every cold dinner, every ignored conversation, every night I'd fallen asleep alone while he worked late with Elise.

"Because, Mr. Blackwood, some things are more important than maintaining appearances. Like preventing mass casualties. Like professional integrity." I paused, letting the weight of my words settle. "Like finally using the brain God gave me instead of pretending I don't have one."

I walked toward the door, my heels clicking against the marble floor with the same rhythm as a countdown clock.

"Dr. Winterbourne," Harrison called after me. "Would you... would you be willing to consult on a redesign?"

I paused at the threshold, not turning around. "My consulting rate is fifty thousand dollars per day, with a six-month minimum commitment. My assistant will send you the contract details."

As I stepped into the hallway, I heard the explosion of voices behind me—urgent whispers, panicked phone calls, the sound of a five-billion-dollar project crashing to the ground.

But all I could focus on was the memory of Damien's expression when he finally, truly saw me.

The elevator ride to the parking garage felt like a descent into a new life. By the time I reached my car, my phone was already buzzing with calls from architectural firms across the globe. Word traveled fast in our industry.

I ignored them all and drove home to the Blackwood estate, where I had one more revolution to complete.

The master bedroom had been my prison for three years. Every morning, I'd wake up in that king-sized bed alone, listening to Damien shower in the adjoining bathroom before he left for work without a word. Every evening, I'd lie there waiting for him to come home, knowing he'd sleep on the far edge of the mattress, as distant as a stranger.

Not anymore.

I packed methodically—my clothes, my books, my architectural sketches, the few personal items that still felt like mine. Maria, our housekeeper, watched from the doorway with worried eyes.

"Señora Aria, where are you going?"

"To the blue guest room," I said, folding my MIT sweatshirt with careful precision. "At the east end of the house."

The farthest possible point from Damien's domain.

Maria's hands fluttered nervously. "But Señor Damien, what will he say?"

"He'll say whatever he wants to say," I replied, zipping up my suitcase. "But he'll say it to an empty room."

The blue guest room was smaller, simpler, with windows that faced the garden instead of the city. It felt like breathing clean air after years of suffocation.

I was arranging my books on the small desk when I heard his car in the driveway. Earlier than usual—the board meeting must have ended in chaos.

I didn't go downstairs to greet him. For three years, I'd waited by the door like a faithful dog, ready with a smile and questions about his day. Tonight, he could find his own way.

From my new window, I watched him stride across the garden, his phone pressed to his ear, his free hand running through his dark hair in the gesture I'd once found endearing.

Now it just looked like what it was—the movement of a man whose carefully constructed world was falling apart.

And I was just getting started.
