Chapter 5

The footsteps above me stopped.

I stared at the IOUs in my hands, and the basement air pressed against my skin like wet cloth. Seven pages. Forty-one thousand dollars. My name — forged, bent, stolen — stamped across every one.

And then it hit me.

Not the debt. Not the forgery. Something older. Something from the life before this one.

The stairwell. The blood on the concrete. Two men standing over me while a third counted bills. Julian's voice, calm and flat, saying *she'll cover it* while someone's boot connected with my ribs. The loan sharks hadn't come for Julian. They'd come for me — because my name was on the paper. Because Julian and Chloe had made sure of it.

They killed me to settle a gambling debt.

Not randomly. Not in a rage. They'd planned it. Built the trap one forged signature at a time, then fed me to the wolves when the bill came due.

My fingers tightened on the pages until the paper buckled. The rubber band snapped and fell to the floor.

The footsteps above resumed. Faster now. Heading for the stairs.

I shoved the IOUs into my back pocket, folded tight against my hip, and moved toward the fire door. The cinder block was still propping it open. I squeezed through and hit the alley at a half-run.

The air outside was cold and smelled like dumpster water. The alley behind Rackley's was barely wide enough for a car, hemmed in by brick walls tagged with spray paint and lined with overflowing trash bags. A single light — mounted above the fire door — threw a weak circle of orange across the wet asphalt.

I made it six steps before the voice found me.

"There she is."

Julian stood at the mouth of the alley. Two men flanked him — one tall with a shaved head, the other shorter, thicker, wearing a denim jacket with the sleeves torn off. The tall one carried a length of chain wrapped around his fist. The short one cracked his neck and grinned.

Julian didn't grin. His face was tight, stripped of every rehearsed expression I'd ever seen him wear. No charm. No wounded-puppy eyes. Just the raw math of a man who needed something and intended to take it.

"Give me the papers, Kira."

"No."

"I'm not asking twice."

"Good. Saves us both time."

The tall one stepped forward. His boots splashed through a puddle, and the chain clinked against his thigh.

"Jules said you'd be difficult," he said. His voice was nasal, bored. "Just hand it over and nobody gets —"

The shadow behind the dumpster moved.

Dante came out of the dark like something uncoiling. No warning. No sound. His fist connected with the tall man's jaw from below — a rising hook that started at his hip and ended with a crack so sharp it bounced off both walls.

The tall man's head snapped sideways. His knees buckled. He hit the ground face-first, and the chain slithered off his hand and pooled on the asphalt like a dead snake. His jaw hung at an angle that jaws don't hang at. The sound it made — wet, grinding, final — echoed in the narrow space long after he stopped moving.

The short one lunged.

Dante caught his wrist, twisted, and drove his elbow into the man's throat. The short one gagged, doubled over, and Dante's knee came up to meet his forehead. He crumpled beside his partner.

Four seconds. Maybe five.

Julian hadn't moved. He stood at the alley's entrance, feet planted, watching his hired muscle bleed on the ground. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

"Dante —"

Dante turned toward him. One step. That was all it took. Julian flinched so hard his shoulder hit the brick wall.

"Touch her again," Dante said. His voice was low, scraped raw. "Come near her again. Send anyone near her again."

He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.

Julian's eyes found mine over Dante's shoulder. Something passed through them — not fear, not anger. Recognition. The look of a man who realizes the game has changed and he doesn't know the new rules.

He ran.

His footsteps slapped the wet pavement, growing fainter until the alley swallowed them. The tall man groaned once and went still. The short one hadn't moved at all.

I pressed my hand against my back pocket. The IOUs were still there, crumpled but intact.

"We need to go," I said.

Dante turned. Under the orange light, I saw his right hand. The skin across his knuckles had split open — a ragged tear from the index finger to the wrist, deep enough that white showed beneath the red. Blood ran down his fingers and dripped onto the asphalt in a steady rhythm.

"Dante. Your hand."

He looked at it like he was noticing the weather. "It's fine."

"That's not fine. I can see bone."

"Then stop looking."

I grabbed his wrist — the uninjured one — and pulled. He resisted for half a second, then followed. We hit the chain-link fence at the alley's dead end at a full sprint. I went over first, the wire biting into my palms, the IOUs digging into my hip as I swung my legs across. Dante cleared it one-handed, his bleeding fist held against his chest, and landed beside me without a sound.

We ran.

---

The community clinic on Barrow Street kept its lights on until four a.m. for exactly this kind of visit — the kind that came through the door bleeding and didn't want to answer questions.

The nurse was a heavyset woman with reading glasses on a beaded chain. She took one look at Dante's hand, said "Sit," and disappeared behind a curtain.

Dante sat on the exam table. The paper cover crinkled under his weight. He held his right hand palm-up on his knee, watching the blood pool in the creases of his fingers with detached interest.

I stood by the door, arms crossed, pulse still hammering.

"You followed me to Rackley's."

"Yeah."

"I didn't tell you where I was going."

"You didn't need to." He flexed his fingers. Fresh blood welled from the split. "You took the card from the blonde's bag. Rackley's was printed on the front. Wasn't hard."

The nurse returned with a suture kit and a bottle of iodine. She poured the iodine without warning. Dante's jaw tightened, but he didn't make a sound.

"Hold still," she said, threading the needle.

I watched the needle pierce his skin. He didn't flinch. Not once.

"Take off the shirt," the nurse said. "I need to check for other injuries."

Dante paused. Something flickered behind his eyes — not pain. Reluctance.

He reached back with his left hand and pulled the sweat-soaked black tank over his head in one motion.

The nurse went back to stitching. She didn't react to what I saw.

I did.

His left shoulder blade. Just below the ridge of bone, where the muscle curved toward his spine. A tattoo — large, detailed, inked in black and gray with a precision that spoke of hours under the needle.

Two wolves. One body. Two heads facing opposite directions, jaws open, teeth bared. The fur was rendered hair by hair, and the eyes — all four of them — were filled in solid black. No pupils. No light. Between the two heads, a single chain hung broken, its links scattering downward across his ribs.

I knew that image.

Every debt collector in this city knew that image.

The Volkov family crest. Not a tattoo you chose. A tattoo you earned — or were branded with. The double-headed wolf marked the family's executioners. The people who made problems disappear. The people who made *people* disappear.

Dante Russo wasn't a stray from an orphanage.

He was a killer from the most violent family in the city.

And he was sitting in a community clinic, letting a nurse stitch his hand, because he'd just broken a man's jaw to protect me.

He caught me staring. His eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw something in them that looked like a question.

Not *are you afraid.*

*Does it matter.*

The nurse snipped the thread and taped a square of gauze over his knuckles.

"Keep it dry for forty-eight hours," she said, already turning away.

Dante pulled the tank back on. The wolves vanished beneath black cotton.

Neither of us spoke on the walk back to the shop. The IOUs pressed against my hip with every step, and the image of that tattoo burned behind my eyes like a brand.

I had forty-one thousand reasons to fight.

And the man walking beside me had a past that could swallow us both.
