Chapter 1

The applause still rang in my ears as I gathered my presentation materials. Five years of relentless work had culminated in today's internal review meeting, where I'd unveiled my breakthrough drug formulation to the institute's scientific community.

"Emilia, that was extraordinary work," Dr. Chen said, squeezing my arm as she passed. "The way you've reformulated the molecular structure while maintaining bioavailability—I've never seen anything like it."

I smiled, still a bit dazed by the overwhelmingly positive response. "Thank you. It's been quite a journey."

"Quite a journey indeed," echoed Professor Robertson, appearing at my side. My mentor's eyes crinkled with pride behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "Let's walk."

As we stepped into the hallway, he placed a weathered hand on my shoulder. "This work will secure your legacy in the field, Emilia. What you've accomplished here will change treatment protocols for generations."

His words sent a thrill through me. Five years of sleeping in the lab, of missed holidays and skipped meals, of pushing through failure after failure—all worth it for this moment.

"I couldn't have done it without your guidance," I said, meaning every word.

"Nonsense." He waved away my gratitude. "Your brilliance is entirely your own. Now go celebrate. I believe someone special is waiting for you."

---

Darren was already seated at our favorite restaurant when I arrived, his dark hair neatly styled and his blue button-down crisp. My heart lifted at the sight of him.

"There she is," he said, standing to kiss my cheek. "The genius of the hour."

I settled into my seat, still buzzing with excitement. "It went even better than I expected. Professor Robertson thinks this could revolutionize the entire field."

"That's great, babe," Darren replied, but his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. He seemed distracted, glancing at his phone beneath the table.

"The director mentioned fast-tracking publication," I continued, ignoring the knot forming in my stomach. "Once we finalize the safety trials, we could see this in clinical use within eighteen months."

"Mm-hmm," he murmured, taking a sip of wine. "That's... wonderful."

I paused, studying his face. "Is everything okay? You seem a million miles away."

"Just tired," he said, finally looking up. "You know how it is with the administrative side of things."

Something in his tight smile made my chest tighten. Before I could press further, the waiter arrived with our appetizers, and Darren skillfully redirected the conversation to safer topics.

---

Two days later, I was reviewing my latest test results when a knock interrupted my concentration.

"Emilia?" Darren's voice called through the door. "Got a minute?"

I pushed my glasses up and turned as he entered, but he wasn't alone. A petite blonde woman followed him in, her designer heels clicking against the linoleum floor.

"Sorry to interrupt," Darren said, though his tone suggested otherwise. "This is Kyra White. She's an old friend of mine from childhood."

Kyra's smile was sweet as saccharine. "I've heard so much about you, Emilia. Your work is just fascinating."

"Thank you," I replied cautiously. "What can I do for you?"

Darren draped an arm around Kyra's shoulders. "Actually, we were hoping you might help Kyra out. She's been struggling to get traction in her research position."

"Oh?" I raised an eyebrow.

"It would mean the world if you could add her as a co-author on your paper," he continued, as if asking me to pass the salt. "She's been so supportive during your project—remember that box of tissues she brought when you were working late last month?"

I blinked, struggling to process what he was asking. "A box of tissues?"

"For the paper," he clarified, as if I hadn't heard him the first time. "Just a small acknowledgment would mean everything to her career."

"I'm sorry," I said carefully, "but that would be inappropriate. The contribution has to match the credit."

Kyra's sweet expression hardened for just a moment before she recovered. "I understand," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "I've always been overlooked despite my contributions to science. It's just so difficult for women like me."

---

That night, Darren paced our living room, his earlier casual demeanor replaced by cold determination.

"This isn't a request, Emilia," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "You need to transfer all credit to Kyra and resign from your position."

I stared at him, touching my grandmother's silver pendant for strength. "And why would I do that?"

"Because it's the right thing to do," he insisted. "You've had your chance to shine. Now it's time to help others less fortunate."

"Less fortunate?" I echoed incredulously. "Darren, what are you talking about? Kyra doesn't need my research credit—she needs to do her own work."

His eyes narrowed. "If you refuse, there will be consequences."

"Consequences for whom?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

"For both of us," he said simply. "And for your precious career."

As I looked into the eyes of the man I thought I knew, a terrible clarity washed over me. The person standing before me had never truly valued me or my work at all.

I woke up in a sterile hospital room, my head split open from a horrific car crash.
