Chapter 2

"Daddy, I want to go to the amusement park! Can Sasha come with us too? Let's have a really fun day as a family!"

Dora's innocent voice was filled with eager anticipation.

Sam affectionately stroked Dora's head and nodded in agreement. Then, he took out his phone and dialed my number.

I stepped back into the garden and pressed the answer button.

"Hello, my dear wife," Sam's voice came through the receiver, carrying the same gentle tone as always.

"Dora said she wants to go to the amusement park. This little one has been talking about it non-stop lately. By the way, how's your business trip going? When will you be back?"

I let out a soft sigh and rubbed my temples.

"I'm afraid it'll be a few more days. Things here are a bit of a headache and can't be wrapped up quickly," I replied.

There was a brief moment of silence on the other end of the line.

Then Sam continued, "I see. My love, make sure you eat properly and stay safe out there. Don't push yourself too hard with work. Your health is the most important thing. When you get back, we'll have a wonderful time together as a family."

As I listened to his words, a pang of sadness shot through my heart.

Since the beginning of our relationship, he would always end our phone calls with words of concern for me.

Now, those once - cherished words felt like a bitter mockery.

Before I could even utter a response, he hastily hung up the phone

. As I hid behind a large tree in the garden, I witnessed a scene that shattered my heart into a million pieces.

There was Sam, walking briskly, not in a wheelchair as he had pretended for so long.

Sasha was holding Dora's hand, and the three of them were chatting and laughing merrily as they made their way out of the front gate. Dora's face was lit up with a radiant smile, while Sasha leaned in close to Sam, whispering something in his ear.

Sam responded with a warm laugh and a nod, and the picture they presented was that of a perfect, harmonious family.

I dragged my feet back into the house.

I immediately instructed Alex to find someone to investigate the truth behind Sam's supposed disability.

Just as I sent the message, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Sam's wedding ring, lying all alone in the corner.

That ring, which once sparkled with the radiance of our promises, now looked dull and lifeless, covered with a thin layer of dust.

I put down my phone and, almost involuntarily, walked over to it. Gently, I picked up the wedding ring and took out a tissue from my pocket.

I wiped it carefully, as if trying to bring back its former glory.

"It's already gathered dust," I murmured to myself.

Sam used to care so much about this wedding ring.

In the past, he always kept it spotless, as clean as the day we got married. He had once looked at me with deep affection and said that this ring symbolized the eternal love between us, and he would never allow it to be sullied by even a speck of dust.

But now, it was carelessly cast aside in the corner, forgotten and ignored.

I clutched the ring tightly in my hand, a wave of sadness welling up inside me.

When I looked up, the place where the display box for the wedding ring used to be had long been replaced by an exquisite jewelry box. Inside it were Sasha's jewels.

The shelf that once held my perfumes was now completely filled with Sasha's.

Her perfume bottles came in all shapes and sizes, a riot of colors, aggressively claiming every bit of space.

There was only one of my perfumes left, pushed to the very edge, looking like a forlorn outcast.

Turning to the wardrobe, the area that was originally mine had been brazenly invaded by Sasha's clothes.

My garments were haphazardly stuffed into the deepest recesses of the wardrobe, wrinkled and neglected.

In contrast, her clothes were neatly hung, each on a delicate hanger. Sam's and Dora's clothes were placed right next to hers, forming a tight - knit group that was a sharp contrast to my disarrayed belongings.

As I stepped into the bathroom, I saw that even my toothbrush had been shoved into a corner.

Sasha's toothbrush was placed together with Sam's and Dora's in an elegant toothbrush holder, all in a neat row.

Even the face cream I used regularly had been replaced with Sasha's brand.
