Chapter 3

I waited until Henry's car disappeared down the street before I made my move. He'd mentioned a business dinner with investors—another late night that would keep him away until after midnight. The perfect opportunity.

My hands trembled as I approached his study. In ten years of marriage, I'd never once entered this room without his permission. It was his sanctuary, his private domain where he conducted business calls and worked on projects he deemed "too sensitive" for my eyes.

"Just get in, find what you need, and get out," I whispered to myself, turning the handle.

Locked. Of course it was locked.

I retreated to our bedroom and opened my jewelry box, removing the false bottom where I kept spare keys—including one to Henry's study that he didn't know I had. I'd found it years ago and kept it, telling myself it was for emergencies. I never imagined I'd use it like this.

The lock clicked open with a sound that seemed deafening in the quiet apartment. I slipped inside, closing the door behind me.

Henry's study was immaculate as always—leather-bound books arranged by height, his mahogany desk bare except for a laptop and a single crystal paperweight. Everything in its place, just like the perfect facade of our marriage.

"Where would he hide it?" I murmured, moving to his desk first.

I pulled open the top drawer—pens, notepads, nothing unusual. The second drawer contained files for his current business ventures. The third held only a bottle of expensive scotch and two crystal glasses.

Next, I tried the filing cabinet against the wall. Tax records. Property documents. Investment portfolios. Nothing about Nyomi or a second marriage.

Sweat beaded on my forehead as I worked, checking my watch every few minutes. Henry wouldn't be back for hours, but anxiety made every minute feel like an eternity.

"What am I missing?" I whispered, stepping back to survey the room.

My eyes fell on the bookshelf that covered one entire wall. Henry was proud of his collection of first editions, though I knew he rarely read them—they were status symbols, like everything else in our life together.

I ran my fingers along the spines, remembering how he'd bragged about the custom shelving. "Handcrafted by artisans in Italy," he'd said. "The best money can buy."

Something about that statement made me pause. Henry's ego—his need to have the finest, most exclusive things. Even his secrets would be kept in style.

I pressed against the bookshelf, feeling for any irregularities. Near the bottom row, my fingers detected a slight gap between the wood and the wall that shouldn't be there.

Heart pounding, I applied pressure until I heard a soft click. A panel slid open, revealing a small safe with a keypad.

"A combination," I muttered, frustration rising. "Of course."

I tried our anniversary date. Nothing.

Our wedding date. Nothing.

Then I remembered Henry's vanity. He'd once told me that his birth date was special because it marked "the beginning of greatness." He'd been drunk when he said it, but I'd seen how seriously he took himself.

I entered his birth date: 07121978.

The safe made a soft beep and the door swung open.

Inside lay a manila envelope and a leather-bound book that looked like a diary. My hands shook as I removed them both.

The envelope contained a marriage certificate—official-looking with ornate lettering and foreign stamps. My eyes widened as I read the names: Henry Coleman and Nyomi Ross.

Dated five years ago.

The room spun around me as I sank into Henry's chair, the document trembling in my hands.

Five years ago—when he'd surprised me with the jade pendant on our fifth anniversary.

"It can't be," I whispered, but the evidence was right there in black and white.

I opened the diary with numb fingers, recognizing Henry's precise handwriting immediately.

"January 15th," I read aloud. "M met me for lunch again today, asking why I've been distant. If only she knew the truth—that distance is the only way to maintain the balance between my two lives. Nyomi understands my need for both worlds. M never could."

I flipped through pages, each entry more devastating than the last.

"March 3rd: M's naive devotion sometimes borders on pathetic. She actually believes I work late every night. If she only knew how those nights are spent with Nyomi..."

"April 17th: Nyomi is everything M isn't—passionate, ambitious, understanding of my needs. When we're together, I feel truly alive. The things we do in that apartment..."

"May 8th: Had to reprimand M for questioning my business expenses again. She doesn't realize that half our household income goes to maintaining Nyomi's lifestyle—and our secret. Worth every penny to keep my two worlds separate."

Tears blurred my vision as I read entry after entry, each one slicing deeper into my heart. The jade pendant wasn't just a gift—it was a symbol of everything he'd stolen from me and given to her.

And all this time, I'd been living in a carefully constructed lie.
