Chapter 2

I called Owen seventeen times in the first week.

The military switchboard connected me to his unit, then to his commanding officer's assistant, then to automated voicemail systems that promised someone would return my call within forty-eight hours. No one ever did. I left messages that started professional—"This is General Hart, I need to speak with Dr. Richardson regarding an urgent personal matter"—and deteriorated into something rawer with each passing day.

"Owen, please. I need to talk to you. It's important."

"Owen, I know you're angry, but this can't wait."

"Owen, goddammit, pick up the phone."

By the second week, my voice had gone hoarse. Morning sickness hit me hardest between 0600 and 0900 hours, and I spent those mornings on my knees in the bathroom of my base quarters, retching into the toilet while my phone sat on the counter, silent and accusing.

I tried going through official channels. Filed a request for emergency leave communication. The response came back stamped with red clearance codes: Dr. Richardson has been reassigned to a classified northern deployment. No contact authorized outside secure military channels.

Classified. Northern deployment. With her.

I sat in the empty apartment we were supposed to share, surrounded by boxes I'd never fully unpacked because I thought we'd be moving into a house together soon, and finally understood. He wasn't avoiding my calls because he was busy. He was avoiding them because he'd already made his choice, and facing me would require him to admit it.

The engagement ring was in his desk drawer. I found it while packing my things, tucked in a velvet box behind old deployment orders and medical journals. The diamond caught the afternoon light, throwing fractured rainbows across the wood. He'd bought it. Had carried it with him, maybe, planning the right moment. And then he'd hidden it away and chosen three more years with someone else instead.

I left it there. Closed the drawer and walked away.

Leaving the base felt like shedding skin. I'd lived in military housing since I was eighteen, moved from post to post with the easy efficiency of someone who'd never needed to put down roots. Now I loaded my personal effects into my father's car—one duffel bag of clothes, a box of books, my service awards packed carefully in tissue paper—and drove away from seven years of my life.

The Hart family home in Georgetown looked exactly as I remembered. Brick facade, black shutters, the brass knocker my mother had polished every Sunday before she died. My father stood on the front steps in civilian clothes, his posture parade-ground straight even in retirement, and something in me finally cracked.

"Isabelle." He pulled me into his arms, and I buried my face in his shoulder and tried not to sob.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I'm so sorry."

"For what?" His voice was rough. "You have nothing to apologize for."

But I did. I'd given seven years to a man who'd thrown me away like I was nothing.

The morning sickness got worse. I tried to hide it at first, slipping out of bed at dawn to vomit quietly in the guest bathroom, but my father had spent thirty years commanding troops. He noticed everything.

I found him one evening in his study, surrounded by military correspondence and strategic briefings he consulted on despite his retirement. The lamp cast shadows across his face, aging him, and guilt twisted sharp in my chest. He should be enjoying his retirement. Instead, he was watching his daughter fall apart.

"Dad." My voice came out small. "Can I talk to you?"

He looked up immediately, setting aside the papers. "Always."

I sat in the leather chair across from his desk—the same chair where I'd told him I was joining the military at eighteen, where I'd confessed I'd fallen in love with Owen Richardson at nineteen. Where I'd promised him I'd come home safe.

"I'm pregnant." The words felt like stones. "Owen's the father. And he's gone."

My father's hands tightened on the armrests, his knuckles going white. For a long moment, he didn't speak. Then he stood, crossed to my chair, and pulled me up into his arms.

"We'll get through this," he said quietly. "The Hart family takes care of its own. Always."

I cried then. Really cried, the kind of desperate sobbing I hadn't allowed myself since Owen walked away at the overlook. My father held me and said nothing, just let me break apart in the safety of his presence.

When I finally pulled away, wiping my eyes with shaking hands, he cupped my face gently. "You're going to be a mother. And you're going to be magnificent at it."

I wanted to believe him.

Three days later, I was helping my father organize correspondence in his study when I noticed the encrypted message. It sat in a pile of routine military updates, marked urgent but unopened. My father had gone to make tea, and my intelligence training kicked in automatically. The encryption was standard military-grade, nothing I hadn't cracked dozens of times in the field.

I shouldn't have decoded it. It was addressed to my father, classified above my clearance level. But something about the sender's designation made my hands move before my brain could stop them.

The message opened, and the world tilted.

Communications between Lenora Black and contacts in her hostile nation. Detailed plans to fabricate evidence of treason against the Hart family for "selling military secrets." Timelines. Witness testimonies. And there, in clinical military language: "Richardson's cooperation secured. His testimony will be crucial for credibility."

Owen's testimony. Owen's cooperation.

The papers slipped from my hands, scattering across the desk. My vision tunneled, black spots dancing at the edges. He hadn't just abandoned me. He was actively working to destroy my family.

I read the message again. And again. Looking for some other explanation, some way this could mean anything other than what it clearly said. But the words stayed the same.

My father found me there, still staring at the screen, my hands shaking so badly I couldn't hold them steady.

"Isabelle?" His voice came from very far away. "What is it?"

I couldn't speak. Could only point at the screen, at the evidence of a betrayal so complete it made his abandonment look like mercy.

My father read in silence. Then, very carefully, he closed the laptop and looked at me.

"We need to call Senator Adams," he said quietly. "Right now."

I nodded. But all I could think was: Owen knew. When he walked away from me at the overlook, when he left for that classified mission, when he ignored seventeen desperate phone calls—he already knew he was going to destroy everything I loved.

And he'd done it anyway.
