Her Perfect Lie: The Empire Heiress Novel Cover

Her Perfect Lie: The Empire Heiress

In a world ruled by power and illusion, the most dangerous role is playing yourself. When scandal detonates inside the powerful Laurent empire, its fragile heiress, Georgia Laurent, vanishes from public view. Investors panic. Markets wobble. The media circles like vultures. Then Georgia returns. Perfectly styled. Perfectly composed. Perfectly convincing. There's just one problem. She isn't Georgia Laurent. She's Sharon Beckley - a struggling actress drowning in debt and one missed audition away from losing everything. When the enigmatic fixer James Barnett offers her an obscene amount of money to impersonate the heiress "temporarily," Sharon accepts. It's a role with strict rules: smile for cameras, memorize the biography, sign where instructed, and never ask questions. But behind the mirrored walls of the Laurent estate, Sharon discovers this isn't damage control. It's containment. Locked wings of the mansion. Security systems recently upgraded. Burned files in marble fireplaces. Offshore accounts bleeding billions from Laurent Global Holdings. And whispers of a former executive whose fatal accident may have been murder. When Sharon pushes too far, the pressure shifts. Surveillance tightens. James grows colder. The board becomes ruthless. Then the real Georgia disappears. No flight records. No secure messages. No proof she's alive. And suddenly Sharon understands the truth: she wasn't hired to stand in. She was selected to replace. Now trapped inside a stolen identity with powerful men determined to preserve the illusion, Sharon faces an impossible choice - become Georgia completely and inherit an empire built on blood... Or expose the conspiracy and risk being erased permanently. Because in the Laurent world, identities are assets. And only one Georgia Laurent is allowed to exist.

Chapter 50

Chapter 50 – Choose Your Name

The envelope was waiting on her desk.

Cream stock. Heavy. Expensive. Her name written in ink so deliberate it felt ceremonial.

Not Sharon.

Georgia Laurent.

She didn't open it immediately.

Outside her villa window, the ocean was calm - insultingly calm - like the island itself wasn't built on secrets and locked rooms and disappearing women.

She finally broke the seal.

Inside: a contract.

Not the training agreements. Not the nondisclosures.

This one was different.

Permanent Identity Transfer Agreement.

Her pulse slowed instead of racing. That scared her more.

Footsteps behind her.

"You read quickly," James said.

She didn't turn. "I don't need to read every word to understand the intent."

"And what is the intent?" he asked mildly.

She turned now.

"You're not asking me to impersonate her anymore," she said. "You're asking me to erase myself."

James didn't deny it.

He walked further into the room, hands clasped behind his back.

"The board has concluded," he said, "that continuity is preferable to uncertainty."

"That's a poetic way of saying she's not coming back."

A flicker crossed his face - irritation? grief? calculation?

"Georgia Laurent," he said carefully, "is a brand. A stabilizing force. Markets trust her. Governments negotiate with her. Investors follow her."

"And Sharon?" she asked quietly.

He met her eyes.

"Sharon is replaceable."

The words didn't feel cruel.

They felt clinical.

"You've already proven you can inhabit the role," he continued. "You've handled pressure. You've outperformed expectations. You understand the machinery."

She held up the contract.

"This makes it irreversible."

"Yes."

"What happens to my past?" she asked.

"Legally absorbed," he said. "Financially compensated. Biographically... adjusted."

Adjusted.

"You'd own everything," he said. "The empire. The power. The narrative."

"And her?" Sharon asked.

A pause.

"She would no longer be a factor."

The room went very quiet.

She walked toward the window.

The island looked smaller somehow.

"You said she was unstable," Sharon said. "Dangerous."

"She became unpredictable."

"That's not the same thing."

James's voice cooled slightly. "You're starting to romanticize her."

"I'm trying to understand her."

"She tried to burn down the system."

"Maybe the system deserved it."

That landed.

James stepped closer.

"Do you know what happens," he said softly, "when institutions collapse overnight?"

She didn't answer.

"People lose jobs. Governments destabilize. Economies crash. Pension funds evaporate. Hospitals close."

"And fraud?" she countered. "Corruption? Blackmail accounts? Offshore ghost structures?"

He didn't flinch.

"Tools," he said.

"For what?"

"Control."

There it was. No apology.

"You think you're choosing between truth and lies," James said. "You're not. You're choosing between chaos and order."

She turned to face him fully now.

"And if the order is built on a prison?"

"Then you redesign it," he said calmly. "From the inside."

He gestured to the contract.

"Be Georgia. Not the unstable version. Not the reckless one. The strategic one."

"You."

"No," he corrected. "Better."

He let that hang.

"You'll have authority the real Georgia never exercised," he continued. "Access to every file. Every account. Every lever."

Her heart shifted at that.

"With permanence," he said, "comes legitimacy. You won't be watched. You'll be obeyed."

"Don't lie," she said quietly. "There are no blind spots on this island."

A small smile.

"Not for pretenders."

The word hit harder than she expected.

"If you sign," he added, "you stop pretending."

She looked down at the contract again.

Her old name wasn't anywhere on it.

Just a signature line.

Georgia Laurent.

"Why me?" she asked.

"Because you hesitate," he said.

"That's a flaw."

"It's restraint."

"And if I refuse?"

He didn't answer immediately.

The silence answered for him.

Her phone vibrated.

James's eyes flicked toward it.

"No signal," he reminded her lightly.

She looked at the screen.

One message.

Unknown routing.

Don't sign it.

He offered me the same thing.

– G

The air left her lungs.

James was watching her face now.

"Something interesting?" he asked.

She locked the screen calmly.

"No."

He stepped closer to the desk.

"You don't have much time," he said. "The board votes tonight."

"So this is pressure."

"This is reality."

She picked up the pen.

Her hand felt steady.

Too steady.

"If I sign," she said slowly, "I become her legally, financially, historically."

"Yes."

"And Sharon disappears."

"Yes."

"And if the real Georgia surfaces?"

"She won't."

Not won't.

Can't.

Sharon met his gaze.

"You're afraid of her," she said quietly.

For the first time...

James didn't respond immediately.

"I respect volatility," he said finally.

"That's not the same thing."

The door behind him clicked softly.

Unlocked.

An invitation.

Or a warning.

The phone vibrated again.

He's lying.

I was never unstable.

I found something worse.

He doesn't know I still have it.

Meet me below the west cliffs.

Alone.

Sharon's pulse roared in her ears.

West cliffs.

No cameras.

One of the few natural blind spots she'd mapped.

James watched her carefully.

"Georgia," he said gently, "choose your name."

The ocean outside crashed harder now, wind rising.

Pen in hand.

Contract waiting.

Empire within reach.

Truth in the shadows.

If she signed, she could own the system.

If she refused, she might never leave the island.

If she went to the cliffs...

She might meet the real woman she had replaced.

Or walk into a trap neither of them saw coming.

James's voice softened.

"Power," he said, "isn't given twice."

Her phone buzzed one final time.

If you sign...

I disappear for good.

Sharon looked at the signature line.

Looked at James.

Looked at the door.

And then-

She signed.

But not the name he expected.

The ink dried in silence.

James stepped forward slowly.

Confusion flickered across his face.

Because written in deliberate, steady letters was not:

Georgia Laurent.

And not:

Sharon.

It was something else entirely.

A third name.

One the board had buried decades ago.

James went very still.

"Where did you find that?" he asked quietly.

Sharon looked up at him, calm for the first time since stepping on the island.

"You said permanence comes with access."

Thunder cracked over the ocean.

And somewhere beneath the villa...

An alarm began to sound.
