His Fated Omega Burned It Down Chapter 1

His teeth grazed the exact spot where his mark used to be, and my entire body lit up like a circuit reconnecting after two years of dead air.

I arched beneath him, my fingers digging into the muscles of his shoulders as Ryker's mouth moved against my throat. The sensation was electric, primal—every nerve ending singing with recognition. My wolf purred deep in my chest, finally home after what felt like an eternity of emptiness.

"You're mine," he growled against my skin, his voice rough with possession and something darker I couldn't name. "Always mine, Wren."

The words sent heat spiraling through me, but there was something in his tone—a desperation that made my heart skip. His hands mapped my body like he was memorizing every curve, every hollow, pressing bruises into my hips that would fade by morning but felt permanent in this moment.

I tried to speak, to ask him what was wrong, but his mouth claimed mine again. The kiss was hungry, almost violent in its intensity. Pine and leather flooded my senses—his scent stronger than I'd ever experienced it, as if his Alpha was fighting to break free of whatever control he usually maintained.

"Ryker," I gasped when he finally let me breathe, my voice barely a whisper. "What's—"

He silenced me by rolling us over, his weight settling between my thighs. The moonlight streaming through the window cast silver shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw and the way his eyes had shifted from their usual warm brown to that predatory gold.

Every touch burned. His fingers traced the mate mark at my throat—the one he'd given me six months ago in a moment of pure instinct during my heat. But tonight, his touch wasn't reverent. It was possessive, almost painful, like he was trying to press it deeper into my skin.

"Mine," he repeated, and this time it sounded like a prayer and a curse wrapped into one.

I surrendered to him completely, my Omega instincts singing as he moved above me. But even as pleasure built between us, that nagging voice in the back of my mind whispered that something was wrong. The way he looked at me—it wasn't like he was seeing me. It was like he was trying to burn the sight of me into his memory.

When release finally crashed over us both, I collapsed against his chest, breathing hard. The room smelled like us—pine and leather mixed with my white tea scent, creating something that was uniquely ours. Something that should have felt like home.

Instead, it felt like goodbye.

I traced lazy patterns across his collarbone, my fingers following the strong line of muscle. "You prepared for tomorrow?" I asked softly, pressing a kiss to his throat. "The whole pack will be watching when we complete the Mating Moon ceremony."

Ryker's body went rigid beneath me. I felt his heartbeat spike, the steady rhythm I'd been listening to suddenly erratic. For a moment, his scent shifted—that warm pine turning sharp and metallic, like fear.

"Ryker?" I lifted my head to look at him, but he was already moving, sliding out from under me and standing.

He walked to the window, his naked form silhouetted against the moonlight. I admired the broad expanse of his back, the way the silver light played across the tattoo that marked him as future Alpha. But there was tension in every line of his body, coiled tight like a spring about to snap.

"There are things..." he said finally, his voice carefully controlled. "After the ceremony, we need to talk."

My Omega instincts flared to life, sensing distress in my mate. The air in the room shifted, his scent turning cold and distant. I sat up, pulling the sheet around myself, suddenly feeling exposed.

"What kind of things?" I asked, trying to keep my voice light even as dread settled in my stomach like a stone.

He didn't answer. Just stood there, staring out at the moon like it held answers I wasn't allowed to hear.

I slipped from the bed and padded across the cold floor to him, wrapping my arms around his waist from behind. His skin was warm, but I could feel the tremor running through him—not from cold, but from something deeper. Something that made my wolf whine in distress.

"Whatever it is," I whispered against his shoulder blade, pressing a soft kiss there, "we'll face it together. That's what mates do."

He turned in my arms then, his hands coming up to frame my face. For a moment, he just looked at me—really looked—like he was trying to memorize every detail. Then he kissed me, and it was different from all the others tonight. This one tasted like desperation, like loss, like a man trying to hold onto something that was already slipping away.

When he pulled back, his eyes had returned to their normal brown, the gold of his wolf retreating. "Go to sleep, Wren," he said, his voice gentle but final. "Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

I wanted to push, wanted to demand answers to the questions burning in my chest. But something in his expression stopped me. Instead, I nodded and returned to bed, pulling the covers up to my chin and watching as he disappeared into the bathroom.

The lock clicked into place—a sound that seemed unnecessarily loud in the quiet room. Through the crack under the door, I could see the bathroom light flick on. I caught a glimpse of him in the mirror, bent over the sink, his hands braced against the marble countertop. He was taking deep, measured breaths, like someone trying to talk themselves into doing something terrible.

I closed my eyes, trying to push away the unease that had settled over me like a cold blanket. Tomorrow would be perfect. Tomorrow, we would stand before the entire Blackwood Pack and complete our mating bond. Tomorrow, I would officially become his Luna.

So why did tonight feel like an ending instead of a beginning?

As sleep began to pull me under, I heard the soft buzz of a phone vibrating against the nightstand. Ryker's phone, the screen lighting up briefly in the darkness. I was too drowsy to focus on the words, just caught a glimpse of an unknown number and a message that disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

But somewhere in the space between sleep and waking, I thought I saw the words: "Everything's arranged. After the ceremony tomorrow, she'll be gone. -S"

By morning, I would convince myself it had been a dream.
