Chapter 2

The quarterly board meeting convened at nine sharp, sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our conference room. I took my usual seat across from Lucian, watching him shuffle through his presentation materials with an energy I hadn't seen in months. His eyes held a brightness that made my stomach clench—the same look he'd worn when describing Max's "special treats" from that boutique.

"Next on our agenda," David Chen announced, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses, "Lucian has a proposal regarding workplace wellness initiatives."

Lucian stood, his smile too wide, too eager. "Thank you, David. I'm excited to present what I believe will be a game-changing addition to our corporate culture—a comprehensive pet-friendly workplace policy."

Murmurs rippled around the mahogany table. I kept my expression neutral, though my fingers tightened around my pen.

"Studies show that pet-friendly environments reduce stress, increase productivity, and improve employee retention," Lucian continued, clicking to his first slide. "But this isn't just about allowing pets in the office. I'm proposing a full partnership with a local boutique owner who specializes in corporate pet wellness programs."

There it was. The real reason for his sudden passion for workplace innovation.

"This particular expert has already prepared customized packages specifically for our company," he said, his voice taking on that smooth, persuasive tone I once found charming. "Everything from ergonomic pet stations to specialized nutrition programs. She understands the unique needs of high-stress corporate environments."

David leaned forward, his weathered face creased with skepticism. "And you've vetted this vendor thoroughly?"

"Absolutely." Lucian's confidence never wavered. "I've worked closely with her to develop a comprehensive approach. She's incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated to excellence in pet care."

The way he said "worked closely" made my jaw clench. I caught David's eye across the table—he was studying Lucian with the same sharp attention he brought to suspicious financial reports.

"What about liability issues?" asked Sarah from HR. "Insurance implications?"

Lucian's smile flickered. "Well, I'm sure we can work out those details—"

"Cost projections?" David pressed. "Implementation timeline?"

"The important thing is getting started," Lucian said, his prepared confidence beginning to crack. "We can iron out the specifics as we go. The key is partnering with someone who truly understands pet wellness at the corporate level."

I watched him flounder through basic questions he should have anticipated, questions any competent businessman would have addressed before walking into a board meeting. This wasn't about workplace wellness or employee satisfaction. This was about bringing Milena Garcia into our professional sphere, giving her access to our company, our resources.

Our marriage wasn't enough. Now he wanted to hand her a business opportunity wrapped in corporate legitimacy.

"Alexandra," David said, turning to me. "What are your thoughts on this initiative?"

Every pair of eyes in the room focused on me. Lucian's gaze held a challenge, daring me to oppose him publicly. He expected me to smile, nod, play the supportive wife who deferred to her husband's business judgment.

Instead, I set down my pen with deliberate precision. "I think any major policy change deserves thorough analysis. Perhaps we should table this until we can review detailed proposals from multiple vendors."

Lucian's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I really think this particular vendor offers unique advantages—"

"I'm sure she does," I said, my voice carrying just enough edge to make him pause. "But due diligence requires comparing options, doesn't it?"

David nodded approvingly. "Alexandra's right. We'll need comprehensive proposals, insurance documentation, and cost-benefit analyses before moving forward."

The meeting concluded with Lucian's pet policy tabled pending further research. As board members filed out, I remained seated, watching my husband pack his materials with sharp, frustrated movements.

"That was unnecessary," he said quietly once we were alone.

"Was it?" I stood, smoothing my skirt. "Or was it good business practice?"

His eyes flashed. "You could have supported me."

"I could have," I agreed, walking toward the door. "But then again, you could have prepared properly instead of expecting me to rubber-stamp whatever arrangement you've made with your pet wellness expert."

I left him standing there, his face flushed with anger and something that looked dangerously like panic.

Back in my private office, I locked the door and pulled out my laptop. If Lucian thought he could parade his mistress through our boardroom disguised as a business opportunity, he'd severely underestimated me.

My fingers flew across the keyboard as I accessed our financial databases. Years of reviewing balance sheets had trained my eye to spot inconsistencies, and now that training had a new purpose. I created a secure folder on my personal device and began my hunt.

Small discrepancies emerged like cracks in a facade—payments to vendors I didn't recognize, consulting fees for services that seemed suspiciously vague. Then I found it: a line item that made my blood run cold.

"Pet wellness consulting service"—monthly payments of $3,000 beginning six months ago.

Exactly when those late-night text messages had started.

Call Me Fake Heiress? Now I Bought My Ex's Company Novel Cover
7.4
I never expected to be branded a 'fake heiress' and a 'scheming bitch' on my own wedding anniversary. "Did you really think we'd never find out you faked the DNA test?" My mother's voice cut like a blade. "You've been impersonating our real daughter all along." The irony was suffocating. They were the ones who stormed into my peaceful life, insisting that I was their long-lost child-no proof needed. And now they dared to call me the fraud. "Since Camille has finally returned to where she belongs," my father declared coldly, "it's time for you to crawl back into whatever shadow you came from." Then came the final blow. My husband of five years didn't even hesitate. "I'll have the divorce papers drawn up immediately. Don't make this difficult, Mirena. You were never meant to be my wife." Overnight, I was discarded. The scandal of the city. The woman who stole a life that was never hers. But they forgot one thing: I never needed them. Before I was George Ashton's wife, I was Mirena Sterling-the Investment Queen. The woman who broke Wall Street records before she turned twenty-five. A racing champion. A tech prodigy. I walked away from all of it. Gave up my empire. My crown. My name. All for a man who threw me away like garbage the moment someone "better" came along. Big mistake. On the night they cast me out, soaking wet and humiliated, I ran into the last person I ever wanted to see. "Look at you now, Mirena," Alexander Pierce murmured, watching me with those piercing eyes. "The woman who once ruled the financial world. Reduced to this." He tilted his head. "And for what? Love?" A dark laugh. "Pathetic." My former rival. The man who spent years trying to beat me-and never once succeeded. Now he stood before me, a Wall Street titan, watching my downfall with hungry satisfaction. He thought he'd seen the last of me. He was wrong. The game was simple now: drop the dead weight, reclaim what's mine, and remind everyone why they feared my name. Within months, I was back. Every market moved when I breathed. Every headline screamed my return. The Sterlings came crawling, begging for mercy they'd never shown me. And George? He watched in horror as I bought his most prized company without blinking. The divorce he'd so eagerly signed? His greatest regret. "Mirena, please," he begged, groveling at my feet. "Give me another chance." I didn't even look at him. "Sorry, darling. I don't recycle trash." But what I didn't expect was him. Alexander Pierce dropped to one knee in front of me-the man who had once mocked my fall, now looking up with something raw and undisguised in his crimson gaze. "I knew you'd take back everything they stole," he said, voice low. "Now..." A slow, dangerous smile curved his lips. "Take me too."
