Chapter 1

The September sun bathed Seattle in golden light as I checked my watch and quickened my pace. I had just enough time to grab coffee before my afternoon meeting with the Richardson Enterprises marketing team. My husband Darius had been unusually busy this week, claiming a series of emergency client meetings that kept him working late. I'd learned to accept his demanding schedule—it was part of being married to one of Seattle's most promising business executives.

The downtown streets hummed with midday energy as I approached The Daily Grind, my favorite coffee shop. Its large windows offered a perfect view of the park across the street, where Little Sunshine Daycare had set up what appeared to be a birthday celebration in their outdoor play area. Children's laughter carried through the air, bringing an involuntary smile to my face.

I ordered my usual latte and found a seat by the window, absently watching the colorful party. A little girl in a pink princess dress stood at the center of attention, her dark curls bouncing as she jumped with excitement. Something about her seemed oddly familiar, though I couldn't place why.

Then a tall figure entered the frame, carrying a princess-themed cake adorned with three sparkling candles.

My coffee cup froze halfway to my lips.

That suit. That walk. The distinctive way he adjusted his cufflinks before kneeling down.

Darius.

My husband—who had told me he was in back-to-back meetings all day—was kneeling beside the birthday girl, helping her blow out candles while a small crowd of adults applauded.

"Make a wish, princess," I heard him say through the open window, his voice carrying on the breeze.

The little girl giggled, her green eyes—startlingly like Darius's—sparkling with delight as she threw her arms around his neck. "I love you, Daddy!"

Daddy.

The word struck like a physical blow. My hands trembled so violently that hot coffee spilled across my fingers, but I barely registered the pain. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the scene unfolding before me.

The little girl couldn't have been more than three years old. Three years. My mind raced backward, calculating, remembering. Two years ago, when I'd discovered I was pregnant, Darius had convinced me we weren't ready. The company needed stability, he'd said. He wasn't prepared to be a father yet, he'd insisted.

Yet there he was, cutting cake for a child who called him daddy, while a slender blonde woman—whom I recognized with a sickening jolt as Celia Porter, his executive assistant—stood nearby, watching them with possessive pride.

I don't remember leaving the coffee shop or how I made it home. The hours until Darius returned passed in a fog of disbelief and mounting anger.

When I heard his key in the lock that evening, I was waiting in his home office, the one room in our house where he insisted on privacy. The room where, apparently, he kept his secrets.

"Selena?" Darius called out, surprise evident in his voice when he found me sitting behind his desk. "What are you doing in here?"

"I saw you today," I said, my voice steadier than I expected. "At Little Sunshine Daycare."

His expression flickered—just a microsecond of alarm before his features smoothed into practiced confusion. "What are you talking about? I was in meetings all day."

"Stop lying, Darius." My hands clenched into fists. "I saw you with your daughter. I heard her call you 'Daddy.'"

"You must have seen someone who looked like me," he countered, his tone reasonable, concerned—the same tone he used when telling me I'd misunderstood something important or forgotten a conversation we'd supposedly had. "Why would I be at a daycare?"

"The green-eyed little girl in the pink dress? The princess cake with three candles? The custom Richardson cufflinks you were wearing?" With each detail, his façade cracked further. "She has your eyes, Darius. Your exact eyes."

He stared at me for a long moment before sighing, shoulders slumping in defeat. "It's not what you think, Selena."

"Then what is it?" I demanded, rising from the chair. "Because it looks like you have another family while making me believe we weren't ready for children."

"Emma is... yes, she's my daughter with Celia," he finally admitted. "But it was a mistake. A one-time thing that happened before we were serious. It doesn't mean anything."

While he spoke, my eyes caught on a folder partially visible in his desk drawer. I pulled it out before he could stop me.

Inside were legal documents—Emma Porter's birth certificate with Darius listed as father, trust fund paperwork, and most devastating of all, an amendment to his will that promised Emma inheritance rights to Richardson Enterprises.

The same company he'd claimed we needed to protect by delaying our own family.

The same future he'd convinced me to sacrifice our child for.

The documents trembled in my hands as the full scope of his betrayal came into focus, shattering everything I thought I knew about our marriage.
