Chapter 4

"He has been talking for five uninterrupted minutes," Silas murmured. He checked his platinum wristwatch, the metal gleaming in the dim hallway light.

"Let him dig the hole deeper," I replied.

We stood in the shadowed corridor of the Vance family estate. Beyond the heavy mahogany double doors, Julian's voice echoed clearly through the grand dining hall.

"Harper has grown increasingly unstable," Julian announced to the gathered relatives. "Her obsession with the laboratory destroyed our marriage. I tried to save her, but she refuses to seek professional help."

"A tragic tale," Silas commented dryly.

"He practiced that speech," I noted. "Notice the subtle inflection on the word 'destroyed'."

"Nyla has been my anchor through this living nightmare," Julian continued inside, his tone shifting into something sickeningly sweet. "She showed me what real partnership looks like. We plan to make things official as soon as the divorce is finalized."

"Ready?" Silas asked.

"Open it."

Silas shoved the brass handles downward. The massive doors swung inward, hitting the interior walls with a deafening thud. Silence instantly crashed over the dining room. Twenty heads swiveled toward the entrance in unison.

I crossed the threshold, my arm firmly looped through Silas's elbow. My stilettos sank quietly into the plush Persian rug, silencing my footsteps completely. I kept my spine rigidly straight, projecting absolute control. A fierce, electric thrill raced through my veins, leaving my palms damp with sweat.

Julian froze at the head of the long banquet table. His wine glass tipped from his fingers, spilling a dark crimson stain across the white lace tablecloth.

"Uncle Silas," Julian stammered, his polished facade cracking instantly. "What is she doing here with you?"

"Attending a family dinner," Silas answered smoothly.

Nyla sat frozen in the chair next to Julian. She wore a fitted ruby dress, clearly attempting to look like the new lady of the manor. Her wide eyes darted frantically between my face and the towering man at my side.

"Harper has absolutely no right to step foot in this house," Julian argued, finding his voice. "I banned her from the estate."

"You do not own this property," Silas corrected him. "The Vance trust owns it. I manage the trust."

"She is a security threat!" Julian yelled, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She locked me out of the Apex lab two nights ago and wiped the servers!"

"I secured my intellectual property," I said.

"You stole my life's work!"

"Your name isn't on the Neuro-X patent," I reminded him. "It never was."

Arthur Vance, the elderly patriarch of the family, cleared his throat from the opposite end of the table. "Julian, what is the meaning of this? You told us the pharmaceutical division was thriving."

"It is thriving, Arthur," Julian insisted, panic bleeding into his tone. "Harper is just throwing a tantrum. She is trying to extort me for a higher settlement."

Nyla stood up. She grabbed Julian's forearm, trying to present a united front to the skeptical room.

"We just want peace, Harper," Nyla pleaded, her voice thick with fake sympathy. "Julian deserves happiness. You need to walk away."

"I walked away the moment I saw the photo you texted me," I replied.

Nyla's jaw dropped. "I... I didn't..."

"Did you enjoy your stay at the Kyoto resort?" I asked. "I hope the room service was worth your entire career."

Julian stepped in front of her, shielding his mistress. "Leave her out of this. You are acting like a lunatic."

Silas shifted his stance. He released my elbow and slid his large hand around to my lower back. His palm pressed flat against the thin silk of my evening gown. Right in front of his nephew, his fingers began to stroke the center of my spine. The friction generated a shocking, possessive heat that radiated straight through my core.

A collective gasp rippled down the table. Aunt Beatrice dropped her silver salad fork. It clattered loudly against her plate.

Julian stared at Silas's hand. His face flushed a dark, ugly purple.

"Take your hand off my wife," Julian demanded.

"Ex-wife," I corrected. "My lawyer filed the petition."

"I haven't signed anything!" Julian roared. "You are still legally married to me!"

"Not for long," Silas stated. His thumb pressed harder into the groove of my back, anchoring me against his side. The intimacy of the gesture in a room full of staring relatives felt intensely taboo.

"Uncle Silas, what the hell are you doing?" Julian demanded, taking a threatening step forward. "Are you sleeping with her? Is that why you froze my corporate accounts?"

"I froze your accounts because you are a financial liability," Silas replied, his voice dangerously calm. "You embezzled company funds to buy platinum jewelry."

"I am the CEO of Apex!"

"You were the CEO," Silas corrected. "The board voted unanimously this morning. Apex Pharmaceuticals has been dissolved."

Julian staggered backward, hitting the edge of the dining table. "Dissolved? You have no right to do that. I have controlling shares."

"You had conditional shares," Silas clarified. "Contingent on the successful launch of Neuro-X. A product you no longer possess."

"Julian," Nyla whispered, tugging on his sleeve. "What does he mean? What about our house in the Hamptons?"

"Quiet, Nyla," Julian hissed.

"Trouble in paradise already?" I asked.

"I loved him!" Nyla cried out, stepping out from behind Julian. "We fell in love. You were never around, Harper. You were always in that stupid lab."

"That lab paid for the diamond necklace he gave you," I shot back. "The one you so graciously engraved for me."

"You sent her the necklace?" Julian asked, whipping his head toward Nyla.

"I... I wanted her to know the truth," Nyla faltered, shrinking under his sudden glare.

"You idiot," Julian snarled. "That was my leverage!"

"Do not speak to her like that," I mocked. "I thought she was your rock."
