Chapter 5

Tuesday came in wet.

The rain started around nine, the way Cassian said it would. Not a storm — just a steady, cold curtain of it, the kind that turns headlights into smears and makes the river look like hammered tin. I sat in the driver's seat of the car and watched the wipers move and thought about nothing in particular.

Cassian's voice came through the earpiece, low and even. 'He picked up the tail at Forty-Ninth. Gray Nissan. Two cars back.'

'I see him.'

I didn't look in the mirror. I didn't need to. I could feel him back there the way you feel a change in pressure before a door opens.

I merged onto the bridge approach. The East River spread out below, black and wide, the rain pocking its surface in a million small circles. The bridge lights ran ahead of me in two long orange lines. Beautiful, in a way. I had always thought so.

'Third post,' Cassian said. 'Forty meters.'

'I know where it is.'

A pause. Then, quieter: 'Seraphina.'

'I'm fine.'

He didn't say anything else. He didn't need to.

The Nissan closed the gap fast. I heard the engine before I felt the impact — a high, revving sound, the sound of someone who had been working up to this for days and had finally stopped thinking. The first hit came from behind, hard enough to snap my head forward. The second came from the left, grinding metal, his bumper chewing into my rear quarter panel.

Through his open window I could hear him screaming. I couldn't make out the words. It didn't matter. I had heard everything he had to say five years ago and had simply been waiting for him to finish.

'Now,' Cassian said.

I pressed the accelerator to the floor.

The car hit the guardrail at the third post and the post gave exactly the way the engineer said it would — not a collapse, a yield, clean and fast. For one second I was looking at open air and the river forty feet below and the rain coming straight at the windshield like static.

Then the water.

The cold was total. It knocked the breath out of me even though I had rehearsed this, even though I knew it was coming. The car went nose-first and the river swallowed it and everything went dark and muffled and immediate. I hit the release on my seatbelt. Counted. One. Two. The current grabbed at my legs. Three. Four. I kept my eyes open. The water was black and moving and I could see nothing but I kept them open anyway.

Five.

Hands on my arms. Firm and practiced. Dominic's team moved me through the water in a tight formation, angled hard toward the extraction point. I counted the whole way.

Eighty-eight seconds from impact, I broke the surface.

The covered boat was right where it was supposed to be, tucked against the far pylon in the shadow of the bridge. Someone pulled me over the gunwale. Someone else wrapped a thermal blanket around my shoulders. I sat on the deck and breathed and looked back at the bridge.

Kendrick was standing at the broken railing.

I could see him from here — a dark shape against the orange lights, very still, looking down at the water where my car had gone in. The emergency lights were already coming. Blue and red strobing through the rain. He didn't move. He just stood there at the edge of the hole he had made, and for the first time in five years, he had nothing to say.

I watched him until the boat moved.

---

By morning, I was a headline.

I read them from a safe house in Brooklyn, sitting cross-legged on a bed with a cup of coffee, my hair still carrying the faint smell of the river. Vivienne had sent me a folder of forty-three links before seven a.m.

SELF-MADE CEO SERAPHINA GRANT PRESUMED DEAD AFTER BRIDGE ACCIDENT.

ESTRANGED BOYFRIEND KENDRICK MUNOZ QUESTIONED IN CONNECTION WITH FATAL CRASH.

SOURCES CLOSE TO GRANT ESTATE CONFIRM NO WILL HAS BEEN FILED — LEGAL PROCESS EXPECTED TO TAKE MONTHS.

That last one was Vivienne's work. A careful leak, timed to land before Kendrick finished his first cup of coffee.

I scrolled to the video. Outside the precinct, six hours after they'd brought him in. He had found a black armband somewhere — I genuinely did not know where a man found a black armband at three in the morning, but Kendrick had always been resourceful about performance. His voice trembled for the cameras. His hands shook. His eyes stayed completely dry.

'She was everything to me,' he said. 'I can't — I don't know how to —'

He pressed his fist to his mouth. Let the silence do the work.

I watched it twice. Not because it moved me. Because I wanted to catalog it. The specific architecture of a man performing grief he did not feel, for an audience he needed to convince, about a woman he had just tried to kill.

He called Marshall Holt's office at nine-fifteen the next morning.

Vivienne forwarded me the transcript an hour later. Kendrick's voice, recorded with his knowledge and consent per the firm's standard disclosure, asking about the estate timeline. How long did these things typically take. Was there a named beneficiary. Was the domestic partnership clause still on record.

Marshall's assistant had answered each question in the same flat, unhurried tone Marshall himself used. She had given him nothing and everything at once — confirming only that the estate was complex, that the process would take time, and that Mr. Holt would be in touch with all relevant parties at the appropriate juncture.

Kendrick had thanked her. Politely. The way a man thanks someone when he believes he has already won.

---

Vivienne ran the blackout like a conductor runs an orchestra — every instrument on time, every note placed.

Memorial tributes from my company's board, released in sequence over three days. A corporate eulogy from a former colleague she had briefed personally. A profile piece in a financial magazine, already written and held for six months, now published with a single added paragraph about my 'untimely passing' and my 'extraordinary legacy.' She fed the press just enough complexity about the estate to keep them writing, and just enough ambiguity about the timeline to keep Kendrick waiting.

Waiting was the point. A man waiting for money is a man not looking at anything else.

I reviewed the debt architecture one last time on Thursday evening. Cassian sat across from me at the kitchen table, his laptop open, a glass of water untouched at his elbow. We went through it line by line. Sixty-two million dollars in personal-guarantee debt, distributed across eleven shell entities, each one bearing Kendrick's signature on instruments he had signed without reading because he had always trusted that my money would cover whatever he touched.

It was, I thought, the most honest document he had ever put his name to.

I signed the will at eleven-fifteen. Marshall Holt's courier picked it up at midnight.

Cassian walked the courier to the door and came back and stood in the kitchen doorway, looking at me.

'It's done,' I said.

'It's done,' he agreed.

Outside, the rain had stopped. The city was quiet in the way it gets after midnight — not silent, never silent, but lower. Settled. I looked at the window and saw my own reflection looking back, and behind it, the lights of Brooklyn, and behind that, somewhere across the river, a man in a borrowed room doing the math on a fortune that did not exist.

Let him count.

I had already moved on to what came next.

It was a geographic match for Elena's last known location, but as I rode my battered scooter toward the massive steel gates, I realized I wasn't just investigating a lead; I was walking into a spider's web. The mansion was a monolith of cold concrete and military-grade surveillance, owned by Hugh Bradford, a billionaire who controlled the city’s elite like puppets. During my delivery, the magnetic locks hissed shut, the lights died, and I was plunged into absolute darkness with a predator who didn't want my money. Bradford pinned me against a stainless steel counter and did something unthinkable: he sank his teeth into my shoulder, using the rhythm of my frantic pulse to anchor his own fractured mind. I escaped with a bruised neck and a thousand-dollar "tip," feeling the crushing weight of his violation and the terrifying realization that my "clumsy immigrant" act hadn't fooled him for a second. I didn't understand why a man of his power would treat a delivery girl like a biological drug, or what he had done to the other girls who had vanished behind those black glass walls. "You're terrified," he had whispered in the dark, and for the first time in years, I wasn't faking it.
