Chapter 3

The Greymoor banquet was the kind of event that looked like diplomacy and functioned like a chess match. Long tables, good wine, the careful performance of wolves who wanted things from each other and were too civilized to say so directly. I had been playing this game for three years. I was good at it.

I worked the room the way I always did — measured, deliberate, never staying in one conversation long enough to be cornered. Two alliance proposals from smaller eastern packs. A territorial probe from the Ashwood Beta, dressed up as small talk. A Luna from the Westridge Pack who spent ten minutes complimenting my jacket while her eyes catalogued everything she could use. I smiled at all of them. I gave nothing away.

Zayne stayed close. Not hovering — he was too careful for that. Just present, two steps back and slightly to my left, the way a well-trained Beta might stand. He spoke when spoken to, deferred to every introduction, and kept his eyes appropriately lowered. He was so convincing that I caught two of the Greymoor wolves visibly relaxing around him, the way you relax around something you've decided isn't a threat.

I did not relax.

The terrace was quieter. I had stepped out after the third course because the room was getting loud and I needed thirty seconds of cold air and silence. The night was clear, the kind of sharp autumn cold that cuts straight through a jacket. I stood at the railing and looked out at the dark tree line and let myself breathe.

I heard him before I saw him.

Crest. Alpha of the Dunmore Pack, a mid-sized territory two hundred miles north. I had met him twice before. Both times he had been the kind of wolf who tested boundaries the way a child tests a fence — not because he expected it to give, but because he needed to know where it was. Tonight he had been drinking, and drinking made him ambitious.

"Ironveil." He came to stand beside me at the railing, too close. His aura pushed outward — not subtle, not accidental. A deliberate flare, the kind that was meant to make a smaller wolf step back. "Impressive showing tonight. For a she-wolf running a pack that size."

For a she-wolf. There it was.

"Crest." I kept my voice even. Kept my hands on the railing. "Enjoying the evening?"

"More now." He shifted, and his shoulder was almost touching mine, and his aura pressed harder — a wall of dominance, slow and deliberate, the kind of move that worked on wolves who hadn't spent six years building their power from nothing. "I've been thinking about the Thornfield corridor. The eastern access routes. Ironveil's been holding those trade lines pretty tight. Might be worth discussing a — redistribution."

He let the word sit there. His body was angled toward me now, crowding the space, and I could feel the weight of his aura like a hand on my shoulder.

I was about to answer him. I had the words ready — cold, precise, the kind of response that would make him understand exactly how badly he had miscalculated without giving him anything he could take back to his council as a provocation.

I didn't get the chance.

Zayne stepped between us.

Not fast. Not aggressive. He simply moved, smooth and quiet, and then he was standing between me and Crest, and the aura he released was not an Alpha's.

I have felt Alpha auras my entire life. I have stood in rooms with some of the most dominant wolves on the East Coast. I know what that pressure feels like — the weight of it, the specific quality of authority that makes your wolf want to lower its head.

This was not that.

This was something older. Something that had nothing to do with pack hierarchy or earned dominance or any of the structures I understood. It came off Zayne like a drop in temperature — sudden, total, and ancient in a way that made every instinct I had go very, very still. It lasted three seconds. Maybe four.

Crest stumbled backward. Actually stumbled, his hand catching the railing, his face gone the color of old ash. Two wolves near the terrace door pressed back against the wall without seeming to know they were doing it. A she-wolf from the Greymoor pack made a small, involuntary sound.

Then it was gone.

Zayne lowered his eyes. Stepped back to his position, two steps behind my left shoulder. His hands were loose at his sides. His face was completely calm.

"My apologies," he said quietly, to no one in particular. "I thought I saw something in the tree line."

No one on that terrace believed him. No one said so.

Crest straightened his jacket. He did not look at me again. He went back inside without another word, and the two wolves by the door found reasons to be somewhere else, and the terrace was quiet again except for the wind and the distant sound of the banquet carrying through the glass.

I stood very still.

Zayne did not speak. Did not explain. Did not look at me with anything that could be read as satisfaction or apology or calculation. He simply stood there, two steps back, eyes down, as though the last thirty seconds had not happened.

I turned and went back inside.

---

The drive home took forty minutes. I watched the road and said nothing and felt Sable pacing in slow, tight circles inside my chest, restless and unsettled in a way she hadn't been since the auction.

The cedar scent filled the car. I cracked the window.

At the thirty-eight-minute mark, I said, without turning my head: "What are you?"

Silence. Long enough that I thought he wasn't going to answer.

"Yours, Alpha."

Quiet. Steady. Not evasive — or not only evasive. There was something underneath it that I didn't have a name for and didn't want to look at directly.

I didn't push. I turned the window down another inch and watched the dark road and told myself I was being strategic. That I was gathering information. That the tightness in my chest was analysis, not something else.

I didn't sleep.

At four in the morning I was at the window, coffee in hand, watching the tree line the way I always did. Lucy found me there twenty minutes later. She came in without knocking — she was the only one who did — and stood beside me and looked at the same dark tree line and waited.

"Start digging," I said. "Finances. Affiliations. Everything you can find on him going back six years."

"I already have been," she said.

I looked at her.

Her expression was careful. Controlled. The face she wore when she had found something she wasn't sure how to hand me.

"And?"

"I'll have a full report by end of week," she said. "But Estelle." A pause. "Whatever he is — it's bigger than we thought."

The tree line was grey and still. Somewhere in the pack house, I could hear Barnaby moving around in the kitchen, the small clumsy sounds of a pup who had not yet learned that four in the morning was not an appropriate hour for activity.

And underneath all of it, faint and persistent and impossible to shut out, the smell of cedar and wild honeysuckle, settled so deep into the walls of my pack house that I wasn't sure anymore where it ended and the air began.

"End of week," I said.

Lucy nodded and left me to the window.
