Chapter 2

I said it quietly.

That surprised me, afterward. I'd always imagined — in the abstract, distant way you imagine things you never expect to actually do — that rejection would be loud. Screaming, maybe. Tears. Some kind of release that matched the size of what was being destroyed.

But I just sat there at the kitchen table with my hands flat on the printed log, and I said it the way you'd read a legal document. Clearly. Precisely. Like I'd rehearsed it, which I hadn't.

"I, Emily O'Brien, reject you, Ryatt Snyder, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, as my mate."

The words hung in the air between us.

For one full second, nothing happened. Ryatt just stared at me. His Alpha aura was still pressing down on the room, heavy and suffocating, and then — it collapsed. Like a wall coming down. Like something in him simply stopped holding it up.

The sound he made wasn't a word. It was something lower than that. His hand went to his chest, and he staggered back a half step, and his face went the color of old ash.

I felt it too.

It hit me like something physical — a tearing sensation, deep in my sternum, spreading outward through my ribs and down into my stomach. My wolf screamed inside me. Not in anger. In grief. A raw, animal sound that I kept completely off my face while my body processed the severing of something that had been woven into me for years.

I breathed through it. In. Out. Steady.

"Emily." His voice was wrecked. "Emily, you don't — you can't—"

"I already did," I said.

I stood up. My legs held. I was grateful for that.

I'd packed the bag before dawn, while he was still asleep. One bag. I'd been deliberate about it — not vindictive, not sentimental. Practical. A week of clothes, my laptop, my strategy notebooks, my passport, the small photograph of Dilan and me from his first day working under Clark's command. I'd left everything else. The closet full of clothes, the shelf of books, the five years of accumulated small objects that mark a life shared with someone. I left all of it.

I picked up the bag from the hallway where I'd left it.

"Please." Ryatt's voice followed me. I heard him move, heard the unsteadiness in his footsteps — the bond-sickness hitting him fast, faster than I'd expected. "Emily, just — stop. Just stop and talk to me. We can fix this."

I didn't stop.

"I told you it was nothing. I told you—"

I opened the front door.

The morning air was cold and very clean. The pack house grounds were quiet, the sky still that particular dark blue that comes just before sunrise. I stepped outside and I did not look back.

I called Dilan from the driveway.

He picked up on the second ring.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey." His voice was awake. He'd been waiting. "The truck's ready. I'm at the corner of Marsh and Sycamore, two blocks east."

I exhaled. "Okay."

"Em." A pause. "You okay to walk?"

"Yeah," I said. "I'm okay to walk."

I didn't hear Ryatt come after me. I don't know if that made it better or worse.

---

Dilan's safe house was small — a rented two-bedroom on the edge of Nighthollow territory, the kind of place that smelled like fresh paint and someone else's furniture. He'd set it up three weeks ago. I hadn't asked him when he'd started planning it. I didn't want to know how long he'd been watching and waiting and quietly building me an exit.

He made tea without asking. Set it on the coffee table in front of me and then sat down on the floor beside the couch, his back against the cushions, close enough that I could feel the warmth of him.

We didn't talk for a long time.

The bond-sickness came in waves. That's the only way I can describe it — a low, constant ache in the center of my chest, like a bruise pressed from the inside, and then every few minutes a sharper pull, a kind of phantom reaching, my wolf searching for a thread that wasn't there anymore. She whimpered. I felt it in my throat, in my eyes, behind my sternum.

I didn't cry.

I reached out and straightened the coaster on the coffee table. Then the small stack of Dilan's paperwork beside it. Then the remote control, which was at an angle that bothered me. I lined them up, one by one, until my hands stopped shaking.

Dilan watched me do it. He didn't say anything.

That was the thing about my brother. He never said the wrong thing because he almost never said anything at all, and somehow that was exactly right.

The tea went cold. I drank it anyway.

"Mom's going to call," I said eventually.

"Yeah." He picked at a thread on his sleeve. "I'll handle it."

"Dilan—"

"I'll handle it," he said again, quieter. Final.

I looked at him. He was staring at the middle distance, jaw set, and I thought about all the years he'd spent being dismissed in that house — by our mother, by the pack, by a hierarchy that looked at his rank and decided it already knew everything worth knowing about him. And here he was, on the floor of a safe house he'd built for me, telling me he'd handle our mother like it was the simplest thing in the world.

"Thank you," I said. "For all of it."

He shrugged. "You would've done it for me."

I would have. We both knew that.

Outside, the sky was getting lighter. The first pale gray of a Pacific Northwest morning, soft and colorless, pressing against the windows. My wolf had gone quiet — not healed, not even close, but exhausted into stillness. The ache in my chest was still there. It would be there for a while. I knew that.

I straightened the coaster one more time.

Then I wrapped both hands around the cold mug and sat with it, and let the morning come.
