I adjusted the ring light one final time, watching the soft glow illuminate Morgan's face perfectly.

This livestream wasn't just another collaboration—it was our biggest yet. Fifty thousand dollars each from Lumière Beauté, the luxury skincare brand everyone was clamoring to work with.

"Is my highlight too intense?" Morgan leaned closer to the monitor, scrutinizing her reflection.

"It's perfect," I assured her, feeling that familiar flutter of pre-stream nerves and excitement. "The Lumière PR team is going to flip when they see our engagement numbers."

At my feet, Pixel, my rescue terrier mix, nudged my ankle with his nose. I reached down to scratch behind his ears, drawing comfort from his presence as I always did before big streams.

"I was thinking," Morgan said, her voice casual as she arranged the Lumière products in an aesthetically pleasing display. "We should go live earlier than scheduled."

I glanced at the time. "But we agreed on 8 PM for maximum domestic reach."

"True, but if we start now, we catch the European audience too." She flashed her camera-ready smile. "Plus, it'll feel more spontaneous. Audiences love that authentic, unplanned vibe."

I hesitated. The marketing team had specifically suggested the evening slot, but Morgan had been in this game as long as I had. We'd built our platforms together, sharing followers, sponsorships, creative control—everything. If there was anyone I trusted with my career, it was her.

"Okay," I nodded, adjusting our streaming software. "Let's do it."

As I checked the final technical details, I didn't notice Morgan quickly tapping something into her phone before setting it face-down on the table.

Twenty minutes into the stream, everything was flowing perfectly. Our viewer count had exploded from 3,247 to over 8,000, the chat moving so fast I could barely track the comments.

"The Midnight Renewal Serum is honestly revolutionary," I was saying, demonstrating how the pearlescent liquid absorbed into my skin. "I've been using it for three weeks now, and my morning puffiness is completely gone."

"Absolutely life-changing," Morgan agreed, but something in her tone had shifted. A subtle edge I couldn't quite place. "Speaking of transparency, Lila, I wanted to ask you something."

I blinked, momentarily thrown by the segue but recovered quickly. "Of course, what's up?"

"You mentioned exclusive brand relationships earlier." Her eyes flicked to the camera, then back to me. "How do you maintain those professional boundaries?"

The question seemed oddly formal, but I answered naturally. "It's about communication and integrity, really. Being upfront with brands about existing partnerships and making sure there's no conflict of interest."

Morgan's expression changed—a flicker of something that looked almost like regret before hardening into concern.

"That's what I thought too." She reached for her laptop. "Which is why I was so confused when I saw these."

My stomach dropped as she shared her screen.

There, displayed for our now 10,000 viewers, were what appeared to be screenshots of email conversations between me and Radiance—Lumière's biggest competitor.

Next to them, analytics dashboards showing numbers that looked nothing like my actual metrics.

"What is this?" I whispered, genuine shock making my voice tremble.

The chat exploded:

*OMG is this real??*

*I trusted you Lila wtf*

*Always knew these influencers were fake*

*EXPOSED*

"I didn't want to believe it either," Morgan said, her voice carrying the perfect note of reluctant disappointment. "But I felt our audience deserves the truth. You've been working with Radiance while promoting Lumière exclusively, and these analytics..." She gestured to the inflated numbers. "This isn't what integrity looks like."

My hands shook as I tried to process what was happening. "Those aren't—I never—these are fake!"

But I could see in the rapidly scrolling comments that no one believed me. My obvious shock read as guilt to everyone watching.

"I think we should end this stream and handle this privately," Morgan said smoothly, her hand moving toward the end broadcast button. "For everyone's sake."

The stream cut to black, but the damage was already spreading like wildfire. My phone began vibrating incessantly—notifications flooding in as my follower count began its freefall. First dozens, then hundreds per minute.

As I stared at Morgan in disbelief, one text message cut through the chaos:

*From: James Morrison (Lumière Partnerships)*

*Urgent call needed regarding contract violation. Please contact immediately.*

My entire world was collapsing in real-time, and all I could think was: why would my best friend destroy me?
