Chapter 2

The morning sun streamed through the windows of Café Laurent, casting golden light across the marble tables where Singapore's elite conducted their quiet business. I chose this place deliberately—neutral ground where Sophie and I could speak freely without the walls of my former life pressing in around us.

Sophie arrived precisely at nine, her heels clicking against the polished floor as she navigated between tables of power brokers and socialites. Her expression shifted from concern to curiosity as she took in my appearance—the confident set of my shoulders, the way I no longer hunched over my coffee cup like I was trying to disappear.

"You look different," she said, sliding into the chair across from me. "Like you've been holding your breath for ten years and finally remembered how to exhale."

I smiled, the first genuine one in longer than I could remember. "That's because I'm done pretending, Sophie. Last night wasn't just about demanding a divorce. It was about deciding to stop hiding who I really am."

Her eyebrows rose as I reached into my leather portfolio—not the cheap handbag Harrison had always criticized, but the custom Italian piece I'd commissioned three years ago. From it, I withdrew a stack of business cards, each one bearing the elegant script: *Eve - International Jewelry Designer*.

Sophie's coffee cup froze halfway to her lips. "Cassandra, what are you—"

"Look at them," I said, spreading the cards across the table like playing cards revealing a winning hand. "Look at the addresses. New York. Paris. Tokyo. Milan. These aren't fake, Sophie. This is who I've been all along."

She set down her cup with trembling fingers, picking up one of the cards to examine the embossed gold lettering. "The Eve? The designer who created the Midnight Symphony collection for the Duchess of Cambridge?"

"Among others." I pulled out my phone, scrolling to a photo from last month's Cannes Film Festival. "See that necklace Claire Dubois is wearing? I finished it in my studio the night before Harrison's company dinner, where he spent two hours explaining to his colleagues why I was too stupid to understand basic finances."

Sophie stared at the image, then at me, her mouth opening and closing without sound. I continued laying out the evidence of my double life—bank statements showing eight-figure account balances, contracts with auction houses, correspondence from museums requesting pieces for their permanent collections.

"Ten years," I said softly. "Ten years of listening to them call me worthless while my designs were selling for more than Harrison makes in a year. Ten years of pretending I needed his allowance while I was funding philanthropic projects across three continents."

"Why?" Sophie's voice was barely a whisper. "Why hide all this? Why let them treat you like—"

"Like a charity case?" I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Because I thought love meant sacrifice. I thought being a good wife meant making myself smaller so he could feel bigger. I was so desperate to make our marriage work that I convinced myself hiding my success was noble."

Sophie reached across the table, covering my hand with hers. "What happens now?"

"Now Harrison learns exactly who he's been married to for ten years."

---

The house felt different when I returned that afternoon—not like the prison it had become, but like a stage where the final act was about to begin. I'd sent Harrison a text requesting he meet me at home for an important discussion about our "financial situation." The irony wasn't lost on me.

He arrived at three o'clock sharp, still wearing yesterday's arrogance like an expensive cologne. His tie—a different one, I noticed—was perfectly knotted, and his expression carried that familiar mixture of condescension and impatience.

"Cassandra, if this is about last night's dramatics—"

"Sit down, Harrison." I gestured to the chair across from his mahogany desk—the desk where he'd often lectured me about household budgets while I knew I could buy his entire company without touching my emergency fund.

He remained standing, crossing his arms. "I don't have time for another one of your emotional episodes. Mother is devastated, by the way. The doctor had to give her something to calm her nerves after your little performance."

"I said sit down." My voice carried an authority I'd never used with him before, and something in my tone made him pause. Slowly, he lowered himself into the chair, his brow furrowing with confusion.

From my portfolio, I began placing documents on the desk between us. Bank statements first—Swiss accounts, Cayman holdings, investment portfolios that would make his family's old money look like pocket change.

"What is this supposed to be?" He leaned forward, scanning the papers with growing bewilderment. "Some kind of joke?"

"Keep looking." I added the business contracts next—exclusivity deals with Cartier, commission agreements with Tiffany & Co., licensing arrangements that generated passive income streams he couldn't even comprehend.

His face grew pale as he read, his fingers tracing the numbers as if they might change under his touch. "These can't be real. Cassandra, if you think forging documents is going to—"

"Check the signatures," I interrupted, placing my passport beside the contracts. "Cross-reference the dates with your precious calendar where you tracked every penny of my 'allowance.' Notice anything interesting about the timing?"

Harrison's breathing became shallow as he flipped through page after page of evidence. Awards from the International Jewelry Council. Thank-you letters from A-list celebrities. Purchase orders from royal households across Europe.

"This is impossible," he whispered, but his voice lacked conviction now. "You're nobody. You're just... you're just my wife."

I pulled out my phone, dialing a number I knew by heart. Within seconds, a familiar face appeared on the video call—Jean-Claude Moreau, director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

"Eve, ma chérie!" Jean-Claude's accented English filled the room. "How wonderful to see you. Are we still on schedule for the retrospective next spring?"

"Of course, Jean-Claude. I was just showing my husband some of our correspondence." I turned the phone toward Harrison, whose face had gone completely white. "Harrison, meet Jean-Claude. He's been curating my work for the past five years."

Jean-Claude peered at Harrison through the screen. "Ah, the mysterious husband! Eve speaks of you rarely, but always with... how do you say... complexity."

After ending the call, I watched Harrison stare at the evidence spread before him like he was seeing a ghost. His hands shook as he picked up a photograph of me accepting an award from the Queen herself—a moment that had happened while he was at a golf tournament, complaining about his "useless wife" to anyone who would listen.

"You're Eve," he said finally, the words falling from his lips like a confession. "You're actually... but that means you're..."

"Rich?" I finished for him. "Successful? Internationally respected? Yes, Harrison. I'm all of those things. I always have been."
