Chapter 21

Sitting in the ER at Mount Sinai Hospital, Silas Vance suddenly felt a visceral surge of panic.

For a man whose resting heart rate rarely spiked even during multimillion-dollar corporate acquisitions, this was an entirely alien sensation. It hit his chest like a physical blow.

A sudden, icy certainty washed over him: something vital, something irreplaceable, was slipping through his fingers.

It felt exactly like that moment at the Pierre Hotel gala, when he had scanned the crowded ballroom and seen Nina standing in the shadows. She had been so pale, her frame so fragile, looking as though a strong gust of wind could scatter her into powder across the Manhattan skyline.

A voice in his head had screamed at him then: Catch her. Don't let her walk away.

But she had walked away.

Now, sitting beside the hospital bed, watching the IV drip saline into Serena's arm, that suffocating dread returned, gripping him by the throat.

He had completely forgotten about the romantic anniversary dinner he had spent hours meticulously preparing.

He checked his Patek Philippe watch. An hour and a half had passed. He had to go home.

He stood up from the uncomfortable plastic chair and smoothed his trousers.

She'll be angry, he thought. She'll be jealous. She'll yell at me.

For the first time in his life, he actually wanted her to scream. He wanted her to smash things, to force him to explain.

But then he remembered the look on her face as she left. She hadn't screamed; instead, she had offered that gentle, submissive smile, telling him to drive safely.

The unease in his chest intensified.

"I have to go, Serena," Silas said stiffly. "The doctor said it's just a severe gastritis flare-up from the stress of moving. You're stable. I'll have my driver take you back to your hotel when you're discharged."

Serena shifted weakly against the stiff hospital pillows. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her makeup smudged, making her look like a tragic, pitiful woman.

She reached out, her fingers weakly catching his pristine cuff.

"Si..." she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Could you stay just a little longer? Just until the bag is empty? I'm so cold, and I don't know anyone in this city anymore. Please, don't leave me here alone."

Silas looked down at her hand. He wanted to pull away. He had promised Nina. On their anniversary, he had looked his wife in the eye and promised he would return.

But Serena looked so small, shivering under the thin hospital blanket.

It was late, the sky outside completely dark.

And Nina... Nina was strong. She was understanding. Nina's love for him was quiet and unwavering, something he had come to rely on as surely as gravity.

Nina would understand. She always forgave him.

The CEO of Vance Capital, known for his unshakeable decisiveness, hesitated.

And then, he sat back down.

For three years, I wasn't a foster child. I was a living, breathing cure. Hidden away in the attic of the Thomas mansion, my sole purpose was to keep their precious daughter alive. Every week, they drained my blood to treat her rare disease, leaving me anemic, scarred, and invisible. I was the "walking blood bag" from the wrong side of the tracks-a stray they'd reluctantly taken in. The day Katharina was finally cured, I overheard the truth. "That walking blood bag has served her purpose," the grandmother hissed. "We are done with her." They threw me out into a freezing rainstorm, tossing a crumpled check at my feet like a tip for a beggar. Payment, they said, for the years I'd "leeched" off their family. Payment for the six thousand milliliters of blood they'd stolen, for the chronic anemia, for the scars. I shredded their charity in front of their faces and walked into the storm. They laughed, screaming that I'd be back, that I'd be begging on the streets by morning. But as I stood alone on that dark road, my world shifted. A sleek, black Rolls-Royce pulled up in silence. The door opened, and my real family stepped out. I wasn't a stray from the slums. I was their lost heiress. And the Thomases are about to learn that the girl they bled dry is now the one holding all the power.
Left To Freeze: The Neglected Wife's Awakening Novel Cover

I am the wife of Julian Falcone, a powerful mafia boss, but my title in this house is nothing but a joke. When our car broke down in a deadly blizzard, Julian rushed to the scene, only to bypass me entirely. He wrapped his heavy coat around his fragile cousin, Livia, and put her in his only available passenger seat. "Livia's constitution is too weak to survive this cold. I have to take her back first." He left me to freeze in the pitch-black car for the entire night. When his men finally dragged my half-dead body out the next morning, they openly mocked me, calling me a piece of "collateral" that the boss wouldn't care about as long as I was breathing. Back at the estate, Julian didn't even ask if I had survived the frostbite. Instead, he stormed into my sickroom, demanding I treat his mistress with respect just because my absolute silence had hurt her feelings. His grandmother then publicly humiliated me for failing to provide an heir, while Livia flaunted the custom diamond bracelet Julian bought to soothe her "fright" from the storm. I finally understood. He didn't marry me out of honor to save my fallen family. He just needed my aristocratic Rossi blood to legitimize his new-money mafia empire. I was never a wife. I was a transaction he was willing to let freeze to death. When his men delivered a heavy diamond necklace to buy my submission, I didn't cry or beg. I dropped the blood diamond into the deepest drawer, and began to plan my escape.
