Chapter 2

The Great Hall buzzed with anticipation as pack members gathered for Bonnie's Coming of Age ceremony. Silver moonlight streamed through the stained glass windows, casting prismatic patterns across the stone floor where my daughter stood in her ceremonial white dress. Her golden eyes—so like mine—shone with nervous excitement as Elder Catherine began the ancient rites.

"Bonnie Collins," Elder Catherine's voice echoed through the hall, "you stand before your pack today to be recognized as a young adult, your wolf awakened and ready to take your place among us."

I watched Bonnie's chest rise with a deep breath. Despite everything—despite her father's absence from her training celebration, despite his broken promise to attend today—she had prepared meticulously for this moment. Her speech was memorized perfectly, her ceremonial bow practiced to perfection.

"Before we continue," Elder Catherine announced, "does anyone speak against this young wolf's readiness?"

The traditional question was meant to be rhetorical. No one ever spoke against a Coming of Age candidate.

Until today.

"I do."

The voice cut through the hall like a knife. Faye Ray stood up from her seat in the front row, her face a mask of rehearsed concern. Liv sat beside her, perfectly still, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

"Faye," Elder Catherine frowned, "this is not the time—"

"Please," Faye's voice trembled with false emotion, "I have to say this. Bonnie shouldn't be honored today. She... she cheated."

A collective gasp rippled through the assembly. Bonnie's face drained of color.

"What are you talking about?" Bonnie whispered, her voice barely audible.

Faye stepped forward, her movements calculated for maximum dramatic effect. "Everyone knows no one her age could beat warriors naturally in the training competitions. I've seen her—behind the training grounds—taking mysterious vials from her bag. She's been using illegal wolf enhancement substances!"

"That's not true!" Bonnie's voice cracked as tears welled in her eyes. "I would never—"

"Silence!"

Johan's Alpha command vibrated through the hall, making everyone flinch. He strode forward from where he'd been standing with the other pack leaders, his face thunderous.

"How dare you make such accusations without evidence?" I stepped forward, placing myself between Bonnie and the gathering storm of judgment.

Johan's eyes flashed amber as he turned to me. "Step aside, Aniyah."

"No." I stood my ground, feeling my wolf stir within me. "Our daughter deserves the benefit of doubt until—"

"Enough!" His Alpha voice slammed into me like a physical force. "I will not have you defending a liar and cheat!"

The accusation hung in the air as pack members murmured among themselves. Bonnie's shoulders hunched forward as if trying to make herself smaller.

"Bonnie," Johan turned to her, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl, "confess your disgraceful behavior now."

Bonnie shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't do anything wrong," she whispered. "I trained hard every day. I earned my place."

"Are you calling Faye a liar?" Johan's voice rose again, echoing off the stone walls.

Faye's lower lip trembled perfectly on cue. "I'm sorry," she whimpered, "but I couldn't live with the secret anymore."

Bonnie collapsed then, her knees hitting the stone floor as sobs wracked her body. The ceremonial white dress pooled around her like spilled milk.

"Get up," I whispered urgently, kneeling beside her. "Bonnie, get up."

But she couldn't. Not with every eye in the pack watching her humiliation.

---

That night, I sat alone in our bedroom, the moon high and bright outside our window. Bonnie had finally cried herself to sleep after hours of consolation that seemed to do nothing but offer temporary comfort.

My wolf paced restlessly within me. Something wasn't right. Faye's accusation had been too perfectly timed, too precisely aimed at Bonnie's moment of triumph.

I closed my eyes and reached for the Luna connection—that special link to the pack's mind-link network that came with my position. As Luna, I could access the collective thoughts and memories of the pack when necessary, though I rarely used this power.

"Show me," I whispered to the moonlight streaming through our window. "Show me the truth."

The mind-link opened like a floodgate. Thousands of thoughts and memories washed over me—daily concerns, secret desires, hidden fears. I filtered through them, searching specifically for Faye's memories of the past week.

And then I found it.

Not Faye's memories, but something far worse.

Johan's voice, intimate and warm, speaking to Liv through their private mind-link: "Are you sure this will work?"

Liv's reply, calculating and cold: "Absolutely. Faye knows exactly what to say and when to say it. The timing has to be perfect—right at the height of Bonnie's ceremony."

"The girl won't know what hit her," Johan agreed. "After this, no one will question why I favor Faye over her."

"And when Aniyah finally breaks," Liv purred, "you'll be free of her completely."

I jerked away from the connection, my hands shaking as the truth crashed over me like ice water. This wasn't just favoritism or neglect.

This was deliberate destruction.
