Chapter 2

The evening shadows stretched across the pack house as I sat in my office, reviewing territory reports with a headache pounding behind my eyes. I'd spent the afternoon in a patrol meeting, trying to maintain my composure while pack members exchanged pitying glances. The humiliation of the canceled ceremony still clung to me like a second skin.

A commotion in the hallway pulled me from my thoughts. Raised voices, then a feminine sob that seemed to echo through the corridors.

"He was going to kill me, Gio! I've never been so scared!"

I recognized that voice instantly. Aileen. Setting down my pen, I moved to the door, my wolf stirring restlessly within me.

Sarah growled. *She's lying.*

The main hall was already gathering pack members, drawn by the drama unfolding at the center. Aileen stood with her face buried against Giovanni's chest, her shoulders shaking with theatrical sobs. Her blonde hair cascaded over his arm as he held her protectively.

"What happened?" Giovanni demanded, his voice carrying that Alpha authority that made everyone straighten. His eyes scanned the crowd, finally landing on me as I descended the stairs.

"She needs to tell you," Aileen whimpered, looking up with perfectly timed tears streaming down her cheeks. "Some of your pack members... they cornered me by the eastern cabins. They said I didn't belong here... that I was trying to take someone's place."

Giovanni's expression darkened as he looked around the gathering crowd. "Who dared threaten a member of this pack?"

I stepped forward, keeping my voice steady. "Perhaps if you asked why they might feel that way—"

"Are you defending them?" Giovanni cut me off, his eyes flashing dangerously.

"I'm suggesting there might be context—"

"No context justifies threats," Aileen interrupted, her voice trembling perfectly. "I just want to feel safe here."

Giovanni pulled her closer, his hand stroking her hair in a gesture so intimate it made my stomach twist. "You're safe now. I won't let anyone hurt you."

I watched as he comforted his chosen mate instead of addressing his true mate's pain. The message couldn't have been clearer to everyone watching: Aileen was under his protection. I was on my own.

---

The next morning, I arrived at the security office for our regular patrol briefing, only to find Derek already seated at the head of the table.

"Morning, Beta Cecilia," he said, looking uncomfortable. "Alpha Giovanni asked me to take over patrol duties effective immediately."

I froze in the doorway. "Excuse me?"

"He said you needed to focus on... personal matters." Derek couldn't meet my eyes. "I'm sorry, I thought you knew."

Sarah snarled within me. *He's stripping away our authority piece by piece.*

I maintained my composure as I turned to leave. "Thank you for letting me know, Derek."

In the corridor, I nearly collided with Elena.

"Did you hear?" she whispered, pulling me aside. "Giovanni's moved your strategy meeting with the neighboring packs to next week. Gamma James will be handling it instead."

"He can't just—"

"He's the Alpha," Elena reminded me gently. "And he's telling everyone you need time to... what did he say? 'Focus on personal growth.'"

By lunchtime, the pattern was unmistakable. Every Beta duty I'd carefully built over three years was being systematically reassigned. When I entered the pack dining hall, conversations hushed momentarily before resuming in forced casual tones.

At the head table sat Giovanni, with Aileen beside him in what should have been my seat. She wore a demure blue dress that matched his eyes perfectly.

"Ah, Cecilia," Giovanni called out, his voice carrying across the room. "I see you've heard about the new arrangements."

"New arrangements?" I kept my voice level despite Sarah's rage building inside me.

"For your benefit, of course." His smile didn't reach his eyes. "Beta Cecilia needs time to focus on personal matters. The pack will manage while you... recover."

Aileen placed her hand over his, her eyes wide with false concern. "We just want what's best for you, Cecilia."

---

By the end of the week, whispers followed me everywhere. Pack members who once greeted me with respect now averted their eyes or offered tight smiles.

"I heard she had a violent outburst in the training grounds," someone murmured as I passed.

"Alpha Giovanni's worried she's becoming unstable," another voice added.

I turned to confront them, but they scattered like startled birds. In the kitchen, I found Elena arguing with two younger pack members.

"She's not dangerous!" Elena insisted. "I've known Cecilia for years!"

"Then why is she acting so erratic?" one of them asked. "Aileen says she's been having episodes..."

My blood ran cold. Of course. Aileen.

I stepped into view, causing both younger wolves to shrink back. "Aileen says a lot of things that aren't true."

Later that night, I caught Aileen in the library, whispering to a group of female pack members. Her eyes met mine over their heads, and for just a moment, her mask slipped.

"Did you see how she looked at us?" she stage-whispered. "That's exactly what I'm talking about."

The women turned to stare at me with newfound wariness.

Sarah's voice was deadly calm within me. *This is war, Cecilia. And she just made it personal.*
