Chapter 6

The mansion was unusually quiet that morning, almost unnaturally so. Evelyn had learn that silence with Lucas Blackwood was never just emptiness it was a warning, a pressure, a test.

She had tried to rest after the previous night's events, the pregnancy hint looming in her mind, but sleep had been impossible. Her thoughts raced, her stomach twisted, and every time she moved, she felt the invisible weight of Lucas's judgement pressing down on her.

When she finally made her way into the living room, she found him waiting. Not standing, not pacing but sitting calmly, hands folded on the marble table. His eyes, dark and unreadable, fixed on her the moment she entered.

"You're late," he said, his voice cold but measured.

"I... I didn't know what time you wanted me here," Evelyn replied, trying to keep her voice steady.

Lucas's gaze didn't soften. "Time is irrelevant. Control is not. You will learn that, eventually."

Evelyn's stomach twisted. She hated the way he spoke, hated the way he measured her every word and movement. But she also knew that arguing now would accomplish nothing. Not with him.

"I... I understand," she whispered.

"Good." He rose, his tall frame casting a shadow over her. "Sit. We have much to discuss."

Evelyn obeyed, perching on the edge of the sleek couch as he took a seat across from her. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension.

"First," he said, flipping open the contract again, "I want to make something perfectly clear. You are under strict observation. Every action, every word, every decision you make will be noted. Do you understand?"

"Yes," she replied, though the word felt hollow.

Lucas leaned back slightly, his eyes narrowing. "I want to know that you are fully aware of the consequences of failing this arrangement."

Evelyn's chest tightened. "I am."

"Good." His voice softened for the briefest moment, almost imperceptibly. "Because this isn't just about control. It's about trust, loyalty, and... proving your worth to me. And make no mistake failure will not be tolerated."

She swallowed hard, realising that every small mistake could be used against her, every slip scrutinized. But beneath her fear, a spark of defiance ignited. She would not let this man crush her spirit-not entirely.

Lucas stood abruptly, walking toward the balcony. "You will also learn that appearances matter. Publicly, privately, in every setting. A Blackwood's wife does not falter. Do you understand?"

"I... I understand," Evelyn said again, though the words felt tighter in her throat this time.

He paused, turning slightly to look at her. "I hope so. Because starting tonight, the real test begins."

Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine. She didn't know what he had planned, but the words "real test" carried a weight she couldn't yet measure.

Later that evening, she found herself in the study, following Lucas's orders to review certain documents related to his company. She was not a businesswoman, not in the slightest, but every line of financial detail, every report, every strategy plan had to be understood, memorized, and reported back accurately.

Lucas watched from the doorway, silent, his expression unreadable. Evelyn worked diligently, though the nausea and fatigue from the previous days made concentration difficult. Still, she forced herself to stay focused.

Finally, he spoke. "You are learning. Slowly. But learning is not enough. You must anticipate. You must see beyond the obvious. This is not just about surviving; it is about understanding the world you are now a part of."

Evelyn nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. She felt small, insignificant, but she also knew that survival required more than obedience. She had to be smarter, sharper, faster.

Cliffhanger: Just as she was about to leave the study, a soft knock sounded at the door. A note slid under it, unsigned:

"He is watching you closer than you think. Be careful what you reveal."

Her pulse quickened. Someone else was involved. Someone knew more than she did-and suddenly, the stakes felt far higher than just Lucas's control.

Discarded Wife: The Secret Billionaire Heiress Novel Cover
8.2
I spent three years playing the role of a submissive, small-town wife for Evertt Baker, trading my true identity for a quiet life in a Manhattan penthouse. I thought my devotion would be enough to build a real home, but I was just a placeholder in his grand design. The illusion shattered at 2 AM when Evertt walked in smelling of Chanel No. 5-the signature scent of his mistress, Adda. Without a word of apology, he dropped divorce papers on the table, demanding I sign them immediately so he could finally be with the woman he truly loved. He looked at me with pure disgust, flicking a five-million-dollar check toward me as if he were paying off an incompetent employee. He told me it was more money than anyone from my "trailer park" background would ever see and ordered me to hurry because Adda was waiting in the car downstairs. He didn't care that I had spent years nursing him through illness and tolerating his family's insults; he only cared about his own convenience. The sheer arrogance of his payout and the blatant disrespect of bringing his mistress to our home was the final blow. I realized that the man I loved never actually saw me, only the submissive shadow I had forced myself to become. I signed the papers with a fluid scrawl he didn't bother to check, then I fed his millions into the office shredder. I pulled a hidden, encrypted device from a kitchen drawer and dialed a number I hadn't called in three years. "Brother," I said, my voice finally steady. "Come get me. The game is over." Evertt thought he was discarding a penniless nobody, but he was about to find out that he had just declared war on the Stafford empire.

He even listened in silence as I spun pathetic lies on the phone, pretending he was a doting husband just to get her off my back. I expected him to walk away in disgust. Instead, he moved me to the penthouse suite and sent me home in an armored car. I dismissed it as a cold calculation to protect his public image. I thought I was finally safe in my own apartment. I had no idea he was watching me on a live security feed, just moments after ordering the hostile takeover of my family's entire company.
