Chapter 4

The city below sparkled like shards of glass, but inside the Blackthorne tower, the tension was a storm waiting to break. I had barely slept since last night, the images of shadows, the growl, and Damon's piercing gaze haunted me. Yet I had no choice but to face the day, to walk into the boardroom and pretend the chaos of the night was nothing more than an overactive imagination.

It wasn't.

As I pushed open the massive glass doors to the boardroom, the first thing I saw was him. Damon Black, standing at the head of the table, his presence impossible to ignore. Even dressed in a tailored suit, even in the sterile light of the office, he radiated danger and command. And, as always, I could feel the thread tightening.

The boardroom fell silent when he noticed me, though my arrival was expected. Whispers tried to rise, colleagues pretending to be busy, but all attention inevitably turned toward him. Damon's eyes, dark and calculating, found mine, lingering far longer than decorum allowed.

"You're on time," he said, voice even but edged with a tension that made my spine stiffen. "Good."

I nodded, sliding into my seat across from him. There was something about the way he moved, the way he watched, that made it impossible to act like I belonged in the ordinary world. Ordinary people did not exist around Damon Black.

The meeting began. Stock projections, mergers, acquisitions, it should have been dull. Routine. I had been in countless boardroom meetings like this before. But today, the air was different. Every word Damon spoke seemed charged with hidden meaning, every glance like a test I had yet to pass.

Halfway through, the lights flickered again. My pulse jumped, and the room stiffened. This time, I did not need to see the shadow to feel it. It was here. Present. Watching. Waiting.

My wolf growled, deep and insistent, and I clenched my fists under the table. Keep calm, I told myself. Breathe. Do not give it reason to notice you.

Damon's head tilted slightly, noticing my subtle shift. His eyes narrowed, a shadow of a smile tugging at his lips. He knew. He always knew. Even without scent, even without acknowledgment of the bond, he could feel the pull that tied us together.

The shadow moved closer, unseen by everyone but me. My skin prickled, and instinct screamed for me to act. But in a room full of humans, any sudden movement would raise questions. And questions could expose more than I was ready to reveal.

I felt it brush against the edge of the table, a faint cold that traveled up my spine. Then, in one fluid motion, it disappeared, leaving nothing but silence.

"Are you all right, Miss Vale?" Damon asked, voice smooth, casual, but with the weight of command that demanded honesty.

"Yes," I said, forcing myself to meet his gaze. "Just a draft, I think."

He studied me for a long moment. His expression softened, then hardened, as if deciding whether I was bluffing or hiding something. I could feel him calculating, weighing, considering.

Before the meeting could resume, the room's large projector flickered to life, displaying a map of the city and markings I had never seen before. Damon's voice cut through the room, sharp and precise.

"This is the area where our recent incidents have been reported," he said. "Unauthorized supernatural activity. Rogue elements moving within our jurisdiction. I want full containment measures in place by nightfall. And I want a personal report from you, Vale."

I swallowed, heart hammering. My wolf's instincts flared. The rogue elements he mentioned, the shadow, the growls, they were not isolated. They were scouting. Testing boundaries. Threats were closing in.

"Yes, Mr. Black," I said, trying to sound composed. Inside, I was calculating every move, every possibility, every risk. I had survived this long by anticipating danger before it arrived. Tonight, it was arriving faster than I had ever anticipated.

After the meeting, Damon did not leave. He lingered, watching me gather my notes. His presence was overwhelming, impossible to ignore. The thread between us, invisible yet unbreakable, pulsed with tension. Every instinct in me whispered that he was aware of more than just my professional capabilities.

"You handled yourself well," he said, voice low. "But there is more out there. And soon, you will have to decide if you are willing to face it with me."

I froze. With him? What did that mean? I did not yet trust anyone fully, not even the man who seemed drawn to me in ways that defied logic. And yet, I could not deny the pull. The thread that bound us was taut, a force I could not resist.

"Why me?" I asked, voice barely above a whisper.

He did not answer immediately. Instead, his gaze swept the room, landing on the corners where shadows lingered. Then, he leaned closer, so close that the heat from his presence pressed against me, making every nerve scream.

"Because, Vale," he said, voice low and deliberate, "you are not just human. And sooner or later, you will have to choose, accept what you are, or risk being consumed by what hunts you."

A shiver ran down my spine. I knew he was speaking the truth. My hidden nature, the part of me I had fought to conceal, was awakening. And with it, the dangers that had stalked me in the shadows were beginning to close in.

Before I could respond, the blinds rattled violently. The shadow's presence was no longer subtle, it was attacking, testing the limits of the office as if daring me to act. Papers flew, and a chill that was not from the air conditioning swept the room. My wolf surged, muscles tensing, instincts screaming.

Damon moved in front of me again, his aura radiating dominance, protection, and something far more personal. He did not need scent to know I was bound to him. He did not need recognition to understand the danger. His instincts were perfect, sharpened by years of hunting, commanding, surviving.

But even his presence could not fully shield me from what had just entered the office.

The lights flickered again, and the shadow appeared fully, tall, menacing, and impossible to ignore. It had taken form, and for the first time, I could see its eyes, burning, hungry, and fixed on me.

And as it lunged forward, Damon's hand shot out, grabbing my wrist, pulling me back just in time.

The thread between us flared, taut and undeniable, and my wolf howled in warning.

I realized then, fully, that survival would not be enough tonight. The predator was here, the Alpha was here, and I, hidden, tethered, and hunted, was at the center of a storm I had only glimpsed before.

And the first blow of this battle was about to be struck.
