Chapter 4

I stared at the mirror in the elevator, the gray suit hanging just right on my shoulders, tie knotted the way my grandmother had shown me the last time she ever visited. My hand kept drifting to the inside pocket—feeling for the recorder, the USB, the will. The weight was reassuring. Proof I wasn’t imagining all of it.

Outside, the lobby of the Westin hotel glimmered with cold light, all marble and gold trim. Monday evenings here should have been quiet, but tonight, clusters of people in dark suits and cocktail dresses streamed in, laughter echoing off the stone floors. I arrived an hour early, my shoes silent on the polished tile, the heat of my nerves tamped down beneath layers of resolve. I was here, and I was going to walk through whatever door they put in front of me.

Halverson was waiting by the coffee bar, his posture crisp, a manila envelope tucked under his arm. Two uniformed court officers stood on either side of him, their expressions unreadable. Halverson’s gaze locked on me the second I stepped in.

He didn’t waste time. “Ian. Before you go up, I have to ask. Last chance. Are you sure?” His voice was low, calm, but his eyes were sharp, cutting through any pretense I could have tried. “Once we do this, your parents’ company, their marriage, your father’s reputation—tonight could destroy everything.”

I met his look head-on, my jaw set. “My grandmother left me a house and one-point-eight million dollars. They want to use it to celebrate a brother I never knew existed. I don’t know if I’m sure about anything, except this: I’m done being the kid they erased from the family album.”

Halverson nodded once, approving. “We’ll be right outside the doors. Signal if you need us.”

We split at the elevator bank. Halverson and the officers moved toward a lounge outside the ballroom. I pressed the button for the top floor, feeling sweat bead at my temples. I wiped my palm on my trouser leg, then retied my tie—just for something to do.

The doors slid open onto a hush padded with thick carpet. Down the hall, the entrance to the penthouse ballroom stood wide, gold-framed, spilling blue and white light into the corridor. I steadied my breathing, checked the recorder in my pocket, and walked forward.

The doors pushed open without a sound. The ballroom was dressed for a coronation: deep blue balloons clustered along the ceiling, an ice sculpture of the Westbrook company logo glinting at the far end, crystal chandeliers throwing sharp prisms across the parquet floor. Jazz played softly over hidden speakers. Around sixty guests milled in small, well-dressed knots—faces I recognized from company photos, and a handful of distant relatives I’d only met at funerals.

At the center of it all, the main table stood on a low riser. My father in a tailored navy suit, my mother in a blue silk dress, and—between them—the boy from the cloud photos. He looked older in person, taller, the line of his jaw sharper than any picture had shown. His hair was combed neatly, his smile flawless, practiced. Comfortable. He wore the same suit from last night’s photo—Westin Hotel, Skyline Suite, 47th Floor.

Projected on the wall behind them, looping in slow dissolve, was a single slide: WELCOMING OUR FIRSTBORN HOME — ELLIOT WESTBROOK.

Firstborn. The word hit me in the gut, cold and final. For seventeen years, I’d believed I was the oldest. That I was their beginning. Apparently, I’d been a sequel.

I walked in, the click of my shoes drawing glances. A distant aunt whispered to her neighbor, “…Douglas’s son from before. The mother passed away last year, poor thing. Finally, the boy can come home—fifteen years, imagine…”

Fifteen years. I was seventeen. He’d existed two years before I did. I’d never been the first.

My mother’s eyes found me first. Her face went white, lips parted in shock. She broke from the table, slipping through a cluster of guests, blocking my path with shaking hands. “Ian—you’re early. I told you seven-thirty, not—”

I didn’t look at her. I walked past, straight to the main table, straight to my father and Elliot. The crowd’s chatter faltered, attention pivoting, a slow hush rippling outward.

My father’s smile froze. “Ian, son, come—why don’t you have a seat? We’ll talk in a moment, let me explain—”

I stopped three paces in front of them, my voice calm, not loud but deliberate enough to carry. “Explain what? That he’s your firstborn? Or that you’ve lied to me for seventeen years?”

The silence was instant and total. Every head turned.

Out of the corner of my eye, Nora pushed through the crowd, her face drained of color, panic bright in her eyes. She grabbed my sleeve, her voice small and trembling. “Ian, it’s not—it’s not what you think. Mom said tonight was really for you—”

I looked down at her, and for the first time I saw a kind of raw, real fear beneath the practiced innocence. I couldn’t tell if it was genuine, or just something she’d learned to perform. Gently, I pulled my sleeve out of her grip. “Nora, the screenshot you sent me—Mom told you to send it, right?”

She blinked, silent, lips quivering.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and thumbed the audio file. My father’s voice flooded the speakers, crisp and unmistakable:

"…once Ian signs the authorization, the Cambridge house will transfer, and next month we can make it official. You’ve been patient. Three years is a long time, son."

A collective intake of breath swept the room. Heads turned. Glasses paused halfway to lips.

I didn’t look at my parents. I took the USB and the will from my other pocket, and right on cue, Halverson entered through the doors with the two court officers at his side. He raised his voice, clear and authoritative:

“By the legally executed will of the late Eleanor Whitfield, the sole heir to the Brattle Street property and associated trust is Ian Westbrook. Our office filed for an emergency asset preservation order this afternoon. Any transfer based on forged authorization is hereby null and void.”

My father’s face went the color of wet cement. “You—”

My mother lunged for me, desperation cracking her voice. “Ian, please, let me explain! Tonight was for your birthday, it really was—”

I stepped back, just out of reach. Her hand hung suspended in the air.

I turned, taking in the whole glittering, stunned ballroom—the guests, stock-still; Elliot, his perfect smile shattered; the projection on the wall, WELCOMING OUR FIRSTBORN HOME, burning in electric blue.

They built this whole room for someone who waited fifteen years to walk into it. I waited seventeen years for a birthday card. Tonight isn’t mine to ruin. Tonight is mine to walk out of.

I reached into my inner breast pocket for the last item: a document, crisp, four bold words at the top—PETITION FOR EMANCIPATION. I set it on the table, sliding it toward my father. Beneath it, a bank statement—proof the trust fund had already transferred to my name this afternoon.

I met my father’s eyes, steady. “As of tonight, I’m not your son. You can focus on being his parents now.”

The silence was absolute.

My mother’s knees buckled; she clutched at the edge of the table, gasping. Elliot stared at me, his face blank except for the crumbling edges of his composure.

And then, as if on cue, the ballroom’s rear doors swung open. A middle-aged man I’d never seen strode in, his gaze finding me instantly. He stopped at the main table, searching my face with a look so layered—grief, hope, disbelief—I felt my breath catch. His voice was rough, uncertain.

“You… you’re Ian? I’ve been looking for you for seventeen years.”
