Chapter 7

CHAPTER 7 - THE FORBIDDEN GUEST

Prince's Rest buzzed with tension long after Lady Seraphina's arrival. Every corner of the outpost seemed to shift its weight-guards sharpening blades, healers whispering, servants rushing with bowed heads as if afraid to draw unwanted attention.

Lyria felt eyes on her everywhere she moved.

Not curious eyes.

Not grateful eyes.

Fearful ones.

Seraphina's presence had coiled around the outpost like a serpent, tightening slowly. And Aiden-despite his bold defiance-was quieter, jaw rigid, gaze calculating as he measured every threat.

And Lyria could sense it now, clearer than ever:

Her life had changed the moment she stepped into his.

A Cage Made of Politeness

Morning sunlight tried to break through the high windows of Prince's Rest, but even that light didn't seem to dare come between Lyria and the sorceress watching her.

Seraphina leaned against a marble pillar, her hair glinting like strands of fire-lightened gold. Her emerald eyes never left Lyria.

"You're wolf-blood," Seraphina said suddenly, her voice smooth and sharp all at once.

Lyria swallowed. "Half."

"Mmm. Half beasts have stronger instincts than full ones." She circled Lyria like a predator. "They sense things. People. Attachments."

Lyria tensed. "I don't know what you're implying."

"Oh, I think you do." Seraphina smiled without warmth. "You smell him, don't you?"

Lyria stiffened. "Excuse me?"

"You smell his magic. His heart. His want." Seraphina's voice dipped dangerously. "Wolf-blood are excellent at sensing desire."

Lyria's pulse thudded painfully. "I'm not-"

"You're not what?" Seraphina tilted her head. "Not drawn to him? Not aching to stay close? Not feeling that foolish little bond twisting itself around you like unseen vines?"

Her wolf bristled.

Seraphina leaned in, whispering silk-wrapped poison:

"You're not hiding it very well."

Before Lyria could respond, the chamber doors opened.

Aiden strode in, dressed in fresh armor of deep silver and green, the royal crest gleaming across his chest. His dark hair was tied back, but a rebellious strand fell across his brow. He looked every bit the heir...

...but his eyes went directly to Lyria first.

Relief flashed there. Warmth. Something deeper.

Seraphina noticed.

Her expression froze into something glacial.

"Aiden," she purred, "your father is expecting us."

Aiden didn't spare her a glance. He moved past her, straight to Lyria.

"Are you all, right?" he asked softly.

Lyria nodded. "Yes."

Seraphina's jaw tightened a fraction.

Aiden turned to a nearby guard. "Prepare the carriage. Lyria travels with me."

Seraphina stepped forward, her tone icy. "No. She will ride in the rear escort-if she must come at all."

Aiden faced her fully. "She comes with me. By my side."

A dangerous silence dropped between them.

Seraphina's wildfire gaze flicked to Lyria, hatred blooming anew.

"So be it," she whispered. "But understand, Prince-bringing her into the capital will cause... complications."

Aiden didn't blink. "I'll handle them."

"No," Seraphina hissed. "You won't."

The Carriage of Roses and Thorns

The carriage sent for Aiden was elegantly crafted-polished wood, etched symbols, vines woven across the frame like living lace. Two massive white forest-stallions pulled it.

Aiden personally helped Lyria into the seat beside him.

She hesitated. "Are you sure this is allowed?"

He smiled, crooked and warm. "No."

Her breath caught.

Then he added, "But it's what I want."

Seraphina watched them board from her separate carriage, eyes burning. When the door shut, Lyria finally exhaled.

"Aiden... you're defying her. And maybe your father. And a kingdom. All because of me."

He turned to her, expression open. "Not because of you. Because it's the right thing. You saved my life. I won't let them treat you like a criminal for that."

Lyria's voice softened. "I don't want to cause trouble for you."

"You're not trouble," he said. "You're clarity."

She blinked. "Clarity?"

"Yes." His gaze drifted to her lips before returning to her eyes. "You cut through the noise. The duties. The expectations. When I'm around you, everything feels... real."

Her heart trembled.

The silver flame inside her glowed faintly. He clearly felt the connection too-his hand drifted unconsciously toward hers, fingers brushing the back of her knuckles.

And again, that now-familiar shock of warmth shot through her.

Aiden inhaled sharply. "There it is again."

Lyria nodded. "The pull."

He leaned closer, voice low and filled with wonder. "I've never felt anything like it."

Neither had she.

But before the moment could deepen, the carriage lurched to a stop.

A guard shouted outside.

"Gate closing! Border guard's incoming!"

Aiden stiffened. "We're being intercepted."

Lyria's wolf senses snapped awake. She looked through the window.

Dozens of armored soldiers blocked the path, each bearing the black-and-gold sigil of the King himself.

A royal messenger rode forward, parchment unfurled.

"In the name of His Majesty King Everhart," the messenger announced, "the unidentified wolf-blooded girl in the prince's company is to be taken into custody immediately."

Lyria's blood ran cold.

"Aiden..." she whispered.

Aiden's hand wrapped around hers, protective and fierce.

"They're not taking you," he vowed.

Then, louder-

"Turn the carriage around! Now!"

The guards hesitated only a heartbeat before obeying.

As the horses reared and the wheels spun, Aiden pulled Lyria close, shielding her with his body as arrows rained from above.

The capital had made its stance clear.

To them, Lyria was not a hero.

She was a threat.

And with Seraphina standing behind the king, whispering poison into royal ears, Lyria realized-

Her presence wasn't just controversial. It was dangerous.

For her.

For Aiden.

And for whatever bond was forming between their hearts.
